Week 3 PBR Camping World Team Series power rankings

Cowboys continue hot start, Stampede starting to heat up ahead of Week 3.

By James Youness

PUEBLO, Colo. — When the Week 2 slate inside Gas South Arena began, three undefeated teams entered. That wasn’t the case when Sunday’s third night of bull riding wrapped up.

With the (3-2) Kansas City Outlaws falling to the (3-2) Nashville Stampede in Friday’s third game, the first domino had fallen.

Just 40-some minutes later, it was the (3-2) Arizona Ridge Riders who produced a zero during a loss to the (5-0) Carolina Cowboys which left the Richard Childress-owned entity (who was on-site all weekend in Duluth, Georgia) the lone undefeated team.

Going on to take care of both the Outlaws and (1-3) Austin Gamblers as the weekend progressed, they proved to be the league’s top dawgs.

The healthy squad saw conversions from all five of its regular starters, including Cooper Davis (2-for-3), Derek Kolbaba (1-for-3), Adriano Salgado (1-for-3), Daylon Swearingen (1-for-3) and Sage Steele Kimzey (2-for-3). And if they can collectively keep guys off Injured Reserve, they’re going to be coasting their way into T-Mobile Arena Oct. 18-20.

Nashville served as the weekend’s only other team which didn’t surrender a game in Duluth, as the Stampede recorded a pair of three-ride wins. It was good to see Kaiden Loud make his debut and good to see the team jump up both the Week 3 power rankings and official league standings with the productive sessions.

There haven’t been any “huge” moves so far in this season’s week-to-week rankings, but the Stampede have solidified themselves as contenders, having previously occupied the No. 8 and 9 spots. Most teams are still within a spot or two of where they were originally ranked, as rosters remain mostly the same, as do expectations.

The one squad which hasn’t lived up to its year three aspirations is the Gamblers, who have stumbled in three of their first four matchups. Down at the No. 9 spot of the official league standings, they haven’t enjoyed the hot start they imagined. But they will remain in the middle of the power rankings as long as they have their aces around.

Just two of 12 regular season events are already in the books. So it’s not that crazy that early-season momentum has spread itself fairly evenly, all things considered. With the cowboys serving as the league’s biggest outlier at 5-0, six of the other nine teams either have three or two wins, with just the Gamblers and (1-4) New York Mavericks (who secured their franchise-first win!) with solo triumphs.

Ten regular season events remain, as the drama continues Aug. 2-4 inside Sunrise, Florida’s Amerant Bank Arena. And with all of this summer’s action set to air on Merit Street and the Merit+ App, be sure to tune in, beginning Friday night at 9 p.m. EST.

Fans can stay tuned to the league’s official 2024 PBR Camping World Teams Series standings here throughout the action-packed season and are encouraged to share their own rankings with us on @PBR social media channels!

Onto the fun stuff!

No. 1: Carolina Cowboys (Week 2: No. 1) Exiting Gas South Arena with the league’s last remaining undefeated record, the (5-0) Carolina Cowboys were victorious in each of their Week 2 matchups as they maintained their top spot in the power rankings. They weren’t messing around with inexperienced squads, either, as the blue and white contingent knocked off the (3-2) Kansas City Outlaws, (1-3) Austin Gamblers and (3-2) Arizona Ridge Riders as the Jerome Davis-coached squad was firing on all cylinders once again. A well-rounded bunch, accountability was on full display on night two, as the team’s three riders who didn’t convert on Friday night found the whistle on Saturday. Doubling down for the championship contenders on Sunday, it was the team’s pair of PBR Teams MVP leaders in Cooper Davis (4-for-5 overall, ranked No. 2 in MVP race) and Sage Steele Kimzey (4-for-5 overall, ranked No. 4 in MVP race) who came through en route to helping the squad secure a perfect 3-0 record down south.

No. 2: Arizona Ridge Riders (Week 2 Rank: No. 2) It wasn’t a perfect weekend for the Arizona Ridge Riders, who suffered a 1-2 record by dropping contests to both the Cowboys and later in the weekend, the Missouri Thunder. But it’s their dominant Saturday night showdown with the Texas Rattlers than reminds us of how many heavy-hitters this squad is equipped with. Becoming the first team this season to produce a second 4-for-5 record, now 4-for-5 in two of five games, Arizona posted a HUGE 341.5-172 over the defending 2023 PBR Teams Champions. With Eduardo Aparecido (3-for-6, ranked No. 6 in MVP race) and Keyshawn Whitehorse (3-for-5, ranked No. 7 in MVP race) comfortably representing the black and white unit within the Top 10 of the individual aggregate score competition, we know the Ridge Riders are regularly converting. Ranked No. 2 in the official league standings as well, as the pack’s highest-scoring 3-2 team, they’re roughly averaging two scores per game, which will keep them competitive in a majority of contests in 2024. Whitehorse’s 90-pointer is always a welcome sight as well, something fans can get used to if the talented cowboy stays hot next weekend in Sunrise, Florida.

No. 3: Kanas City Outlaws (Week 2 Rank: No. 3) Coming into Week 2 with a perfect 2-0 record, the Outlaws appeared to be a quality contender once again. Hell, with 2024 PBR World Champion Cassio Dias rocking orange and black, they always will be. But after dropping its weekend-opener against the trending (3-2) Nashville Stampede, they were forced to regroup and refocus for a Saturday showdown. Eventually securing a 178.25-89.5 win over the Florida Freedom, they successfully rebounded, only to be let down on Sunday courtesy of a loss to Carolina. Of course, that wouldn’t stop Dias from earning the top spot in the MVP race, now 4-for-6 after producing matching 2-for-3 showcases in both Week 1 and 2. Seeing Sandro Batista improve to 2-for-4 on the year while winning Saturday’s Shootout Round, J.W. Hart knows his team has what it takes to compete in Las Vegas. He just needs a few more quality conversions from guys like Koltin Hevalow, PBR Teams rookie Brennon Eldred and company. Kansas City should stay within the Top 5 for most of the season, currently maintaining their No. 3 spot from Week 2.

No. 4: Oklahoma Wildcatters (Week 2 Rank: No. 5) Arguably one of the biggest takeaways from the first-ever PBR Teams: Wildcatter Days was that J.B. Mauney and company had assembled a year one squad which was primed to compete. Week 2 essentially confirmed that once more, as the Wildcatters stormed into Gas South Arena and kept the momentum going. Going 1-1 overall, they made franchise history Saturday night as the team posted its first 4-for-5 effort as a team.

Clay Guiton, Cort McFadden, Eduardo Matos, oh my! Seeing the youngsters get on the same page within the same game has to make the Dragon Slayer feel pretty good about his team just fives games into year three. Seeing them ranked No. 4 both in the power rankings and official league standings confirms they have what it takes to go head-to-head with any squad on tour. Cort McFadden, now 4-for-5 and ranked No. 5 in the MVP race, has been a blessing since being acquired from the struggling (1-3) Austin Gamblers. Once Austin Richardson is ready to go, this team could very much find itself competing inside T-Mobile Arena with TONS on the line.

No. 5 Austin Gamblers (Week 2 Rank: No. 4) Sitting at 1-3 in the middle of the team’s roughest start in three years of 5-on-5 action, the Austin Gamblers aren’t happy with how they’ve come out of the gates. And Nashville Stampede fans, who have fought hard to earn a 3-2 start, probably aren’t happy to see the green and black unit ranked above them here. But as long as Austin continues to roster its top-tier trio of standouts, they will continue to be ranked in the Top 5.

That trio was on full display Friday night as the Gamblers posted a convincing 260.75-0 win over the fellow late bloomers in the (1-4) New York Mavericks. But it’s not about who they beat. It’s about who showed up for Austin: each of their all-world talents in Dalton Kasel, Kaique Pacheco and Jose Vitor Leme. Unfortunately, when they were met with the league-leading Cowboys on Saturday, it was only Leme who was able to double down, courtesy of an 85.5-point dance with Sweet John. The two-time PBR Teams MVP, now 3-for-4 and ranked tied for No. 9 in the individual aggregate, has some catching up to do if he hopes to bring his three-peat to life. But if he continues to ride 75% of his bulls, or anything north of the 50% mark, really, Austin will be just fine in the long run.

No. 6: Nashville Stampede (Week 2 Rank: No. 8) One of the biggest movers ahead of Week 3’s slate inside Amerant Bank Arena, home of the 2024 Stanley Cup Champion Florida Panthers (NHL), the Nashville Stampede are off to their hottest start in PBR Teams history. Typically a bit sluggish and veteran-heavy to begin campaigns in years past, the team welcomed all-star Kaiden Loud back to the lineup, which very much helped them secure a perfect 2-0 record on the weekend. Posting 83.5 and 87.5-point rides as one of the team’s biggest pillars for both the future and now, Loud couldn’t have made Head Coach Justin McBride and the organization more proud during his 2024 debut.

Edging out the competitive Outlaws Friday night en route to handing Kansas City their first loss of the season, 257.5-175.75, it was a true group effort as Loud teamed up with a pair of veterans in Alan de Souza and Silvano Alves in getting his squad in the win column. Enjoying Saturday night off, they returned just as hot, eventually handing the defending Champion Rattlers a 258.75-0 loss, thanks to Mason Taylor and Ednelio Almeida getting in on the fun. They aren’t the most potent team overall, but if they can consistently put up three scores, they’ll be a force to be reckoned with. They technically already are, now 3-2 and ranked No. 3 in the league standings! Throw in a night two Shootout Round win from Alan de Souza and the Stampede are officially trending in the right direction.

No. 7 Texas Rattlers (Week 2 Rank: No. 7) They’re the defending PBR Teams Champions, no doubt, but they’re still the Texas Rattlers. And for fans who have followed the Cody Lambert-team for the first two seasons, they know that Texas isn’t afraid to muck it up in the middle of the regular season pack. Exactly where the Rattlers find themselves at 2-3 through Week 2. Getting the slate inside Gas South Arena started Friday during a victory over the Florida Freedom, Texas posted a 174.25-87.75 victory over the red, white and blue squad. Representing their second win of the 2024 season, the Rattlers didn’t waste any time in getting the action going. For the second-straight week, the circuit’s first rider to perform found the 8, as Brady Oleson bested I’ll Make Ya Famous for a quality 86.75 points. Potentially just as important, if not more, it was his teammate Marcelo Procopio Pereira who threw down a nasty 87.5-pointer aboard Black 6.

With 18-year-old star John Crimber delivering an 87.75-point conversion during the event’s final out, Pereira’s go ended up being the game-winner, ever-important as the squad got back to .500 on the season. Unfortunately for Texas, they went on to drop their last two showdowns to the Arizona Ridge Riders and Nashville Stampede, ending the weekend 2-3 overall. The zero from the team’s Sunday night 258.75-0 loss isn’t how they wanted to end the showcase. So, look for them to come out firing in Florida this weekend.

No. 8: Florida Freedom (Week 2 Rank: No. 6) At the end of Week 1, everything was swell enough for the Freedom, as they knew John Crimber began his 5-on-5 series with a 2-for-2 start while Elizmar Jeremias sat atop the MVP standings with his flawless 3-for-3 effort. While Crimber was able to stay perfect on the season, now 4-for-4 after recording 87.75 and 89.5-point outings. Jeremias, however, went 0-for-2 in Week 2, as did all riders not named John Crimber. It’s good to see the youngster perform as his team’s anchor. But they’ll need to figure out what’s going on in the No. 1 to 4 slots if they hope to impress fans at PBR Teams: Freedom Days Aug. 2-4. They had a few close calls throughout their first four games, both in score and six and seven-second efforts. But Paulo Crimber and each of the cowboys in that locker room know they should be riding for 8 to 10 seconds. Exactly what they’ll look to do in Week 3. Drawing Kansas City and Texas in the same weekend didn’t help their odds of success in Week 2. But they need to get more than one ride score on the board if they want to turn things around from the 1-3 start.

No. 9: Missouri Thunder (Week 2 Rank: No. 9) It doesn’t seem like the Thunder have made much noise in 2024 yet, having endured a bit of a roller coaster as the red and yellow team goes up and down. But sitting at No. 6 in the league standings courtesy of a 2-3 start, there’s plenty of reasons for the team to feel pretty good, all things considered. Pulling off one of the more surprising upsets so far, Missouri ended Arizona’s hopes of bouncing back on Sunday by outriding the Ridge Riders two to one. Tapping Dawson Gleaves for his first appearance of 2024, the young gun made the 8 before teaming up with fellow youngster in Grayson Cole, who converted for 88.25 points. Picking up the win, they are one of six teams sitting at either 2-3 or 3-2 ahead of Week 3. Knowing Cole went 2-for-2 on the weekend, he’ll be a guy to watch in Florida, as he used to ride for the Freedom not so long ago. Boudreaux Campbell and Andrew Alvidrez haven’t enjoyed the spicy start they would’ve liked in year three, but if the duo of hard workers can turn things around, Missouri could continue piecing together some wins.

No. 10 New York Mavericks (Week 2 Rank: No. 10) They may still be down at the No. 10 spot in both the power rankings and league standings, but the Mavericks are officially in the win column after defeating their fellow year one Wildcatters Sunday. Probably the biggest shocker of the weekend, as the Wildcatters were coming off their four-ride effort and the Mavericks brought an 0-4 record into the matinee meeting, New York only needed one qualified ride to get the job done. But as Head Coach Kody Lostroh said in a postgame interview, they want to ride all five, but a win is a win. Representing the franchise’s first PBR Teams victory, it was a big win. The 85.5-0 scoreboard saw Leandro Machado serve as the game’s lone successful cowboy as they logged just their second 8-second effort through 25 attempts. The primary reason they remain at the bottom of the standings in Week 3. That said, they have every opportunity to string a few together inside Amerant Bank Arena this weekend during games against the Florida Freedom and Oklahoma Wildcatters.
