By the Numbers: No. 5 Alan de Souza puts on a show in Pacific Northwest

By the Numbers: No. 5 Alan de Souza puts on a show in Pacific Northwest

Top 3 in four of his last five events, ON FIRE would be an understatement!

By James Youness

PUEBLO, Colo. – Take a BOW, Alan de Souza!

Hell, take two, after bull riding fans around the world watched the veteran double down in the Pacific Northwest last week via claiming event titles in both Everett and Tacoma, Washington!

A perfect 6-for-6 throughout the two-stop set, Souza made it known early that this was a business trip. Opening his showcase inside Angel of the Winds Arena on Wednesday night during the rare midweek occurrence, he exited his showdown with Get At Me for a solid 83.25 points.

Which doesn’t exactly pay the bills on its own, but nonetheless got him on the board on night one.

Staying perfect when the pack returned on Championship Thursday, the veteran teamed up with Smoke Down, eventually scored an improved 86.75 points as he punched his ticket to another short round.

And when you’re feeling it, you’re feeling it, as Souza went on to complete his flawless masterpiece in the short go, thus becoming the only rider to complete a perfect 3-for-3 outing on his way to securing his first win of the 2024 season (and first in nearly five years, with the inaugural instance taking place in 2019!)

Opting into his Round 3 dance with Centerfold, he was scored an event-clinching 85.5 points as he matched the animal athlete’s every move.

Earning a season-high 134.5 UTB points and a fancy check for $54,641, courtesy of his big win, one of the tour’s hottest riders was merely getting warmed up, all things considered!

With the pack getting Friday off to rest up and travel 62 miles south, where they’d complete the back-to-back inside Tacoma Dome as the weekend came to a close, Souza didn’t get the typical four or five days off to enjoy the victory before getting back at it.

Which seems to have worked out just fine for the 30-year-old, as he opened event No. 2 by extending his ride streak to four-straight.

Earning a mundane, albeit acceptable, score of 81.5 points dancing with Fort Knox to the whistle, Souza’s consistent ability to log conversion after conversion while not worrying about the point totals was on total display once again.

Nearly repeating the effort during Sunday’s second round, he managed an odd 80.75-point mark for his 8 seconds of work atop Hell Bound. Again, not flashy by any means. But between the pair of successful outs, he was 162.25 points ahead of more than half the pack as he continued to maintain a spot on the leaderboard’s Top 10.

Able to turn things up a notch when he chose a rematch with Centerfold in the championship go, just three days after besting the animal athlete in Everett, he completed his perfect performance on his way to becoming the only rider in Tacoma to go 3-for-3.

While the judges awarded the duo a mere 84.75 points, one of the lower scores all season earned during a short go, the details didn’t matter, as the veteran was walking away with a second large check on the weekend.

This time inked for $47,276 (alongside a much-welcomed 114 UTB points), Souza got on his plane heading south with a combined $101,917 in earnings and an insane 248.5 UTB points as he solidified his spot inside the tour’s Top 5.

Potentially the craziest part of the entire stretch? None of the cowboy’s scores were marked higher than 86.75 points, with his Round 2 ride aboard Smoke Down somehow viewed as a better result than BOTH of his championship round conversions.

Joining only No. 1 Casio Dias and No. 7 Austin Richardson (who’s set to miss the remainder of the 2024 premier series season since getting banged up in January) in the rare air of back-to-back winners in 2024, he’s checking all of the boxes needed in order to catch up to the tour leader himself.

While Dias may still be some 543.33 UTB points ahead of Souza, riders ranked between the No. 2 (John Crimber) and No. 5 (Souza) spot are now officially all within 48.83 points of one another.

And with No. 4 Dalton Kasel leading Souza by exactly one point, the Top 3 is easily in sight for the talented veteran. But if the Brazilian hopes to catch up to his rookie runaway counterpart, in Dias, he’ll need to not only capitalize during the tour’s final regular season showdown in Louisville, Kentucky, but get his postseason started with some round-winning efforts when the competition begins inside Cowtown Coliseum May 9-12!

If Dias, Crimber and Kasel have held down the fort by extending their respective reputations with next-level rides, it’s been Souza (32-for-56) and No. 3 Eduardo Aparecido (27-for-59) who have grinded their way to the top with the ole quantitative approach, now second and third, respectively, in overall conversions this season.

Zooming in on Souza’s 32 successful outs, zero of the attempts have met the 90-point mark this season (whereas Dias has ripped off eight during his rookie season). But when you consider he’s just three qualified rides behind the tour-blazing leader in the conversion column, it’s rather apparent there’s proof in the pudding, as the veteran’s consistent approach and favorable finishes continue to fuel his career-best campaign.

When you consider riders will have just four rounds to prove their worth during the 2024 PBR World Finals: Unleash The Beast – Eliminations inside Cowtown Coliseum, sure, a 90 or two could go a long way.

But couldn’t three or four quality, mid-80s do some damage too?

Especially when you consider Souza is already ranked No. 5 in the world?

Bringing a whopping seven Top 5 finishes into the regular season finale, (which includes consecutive second-place efforts in Nampa, Idaho, and Sioux Falls, South Dakota, followed by his back-to-back wins in Washington state), he’s now enjoyed podium-worthy performances in four of his last five appearances.

We aren’t in the business of handing out gambling advice. But if you’re a betting fan, don’t overlook Souza to make some more noise here this weekend in Louisville, as the tour's contestants prepare to duke it out in hopes of earning some late-season, and potentially World Finals-clinching, points!

With Unleash The Beast set to conclude the 2024 regular season campaign inside KFC Yum! Center April 26-27 during the 23rd and final regular season event of the premier series slate in Louisville, Kentucky, we’re taking a quick look back at some of the numerical takeaways from last weekend’s pair of Washington-based showdowns during this week’s By the Numbers!

Top 5 for No. 4: “Better late than never” would’ve been an understatement for No. 4 Dalton Kasel, who arrived in Tacoma Saturday evening just an hour or two before climbing aboard the chutes. Missing introductions and his typical gameday routine due to some travel complications, the World Champion-hopeful was still able to punch the clock in a BIG way by the time his matchup dawned. Matching Pookie Holler’s every move en route to earning a round-winning, 88.5-point score, Kasel stole the show during one of the round’s final outs in epic fashion.

After sitting out contests in Billings, Montana, and Everett, Kasel returned with a vengeance, reminding the pack how potent he can be in a moment’s notice. Following the rank effort up less than 24 hours later on Sunday afternoon, the 25-year-old advanced to a perfect 2-for-2 by dancing with Ridgeway for a quality 88-point strike. Which proved enough to earn the Muleshoe, Texas, native a third-place finish, no doubt. Despite hoping to put on a bigger show with his girlfriend and daughter in attendance, he was eventually sent to the dirt during his showdown with DirtyBru but still secured a clutch 87 UTB points. Just one point ahead of Alan de Souza, Kasel’s spot inside AT&T Stadium is essentially solidified already. But that won’t keep him from giving his all inside KFC Yum! Center this weekend.

Doubling Down & Moving Around: With extra opportunities come additional points. And the best bull riders in the world sure didn’t take the dual-event week for granted, as several cowboys further positioned themselves toward achieving their season-ending goals. Whether that means knowing their spot inside the Top 15 is secured, inching closer to exiting the Danger Zone or doing all they can to jump inside the Top 40, thus gaining a berth to the 2024 PBR World Finals: Unleash The Beast!

Among the biggest movers from the weekend was Sage Steele Kimzey, who not only looked LEGNEDARY during his eye-popping ride aboard UTZ BesTex Legend in Tacoma but ripped off a flashy 88-point conversion atop Tijuana Two-Step in the event’s second round.

Securing a second-place finish inside Tacoma Dome Sunday afternoon by besting the prized bovine for an event-high 91.5 points (now the veteran’s highest-scored ride at a PBR-sanctioned event, which also tied the sixth-highest score of the entire 2024 season), the veteran jumped from his pre-event rank of No. 34 all the way up to the No. 21 spot! After missing two months smack-dab in the middle of the campaign, the seven-time PRCA World Champion hasn’t been afraid to give his all here since returning to action. Exactly what he’ll look to do in Louisville if he hopes to jump another six spots up the leaderboard on his way to the Top 15!

Not as dramatic overall, yet technically more consistent than Kimzey was over the two-event stretch, Kyler Oliver turned in a productive third-place finish (2-for-3) in Everett, where he gained a critical 69 UTB points for his first podium effort of the year. Following it up a few nights later albeit just 1-for-2, he brought home an additional 10 points for his 19th-place effort. Beginning his week ranked No. 38 and very much on the bubble of the tour’s Top 40 (which will be invited to Cowtown Coliseum for the season-culminating World Finals showdown), he ended the weekend four spots higher, now sitting at No. 34 ahead of the Cooper Tires PBR Louisville, presented by Pneu-Dart.

Very much dramatic, an unranked Shane Scott got his first taste of what the premier series has to offer just five days after the 18-year-old won his PBR debut event in Eugene, Oregon. While he was 0-for-2 overall in Everett, he rebounded in a stellar way when the tour made its way to Tacoma. After besting both Zeus (87.25 points: Round 1) and Jelly Roll (85.25 points: Round 2), the young talent found himself atop the event leaderboard en route to getting a chance in his career-first short round. And while he wasn’t able to finish the 3-for-3 effort, he still managed 49.5 UTB points as he rocketed to the No. 50 rank. Had he finished the deed, he very well could’ve secured a spot inside Cowtown Coliseum.

45.25: Two showdowns means it was a PAIR of bucking bulls who earned respective YETI “Built for the Wild” Bull of the Event titles as the tour entertained tens of thousands of fans last weekend in the Pacific Northwest. And with a world title on the line for the skilled animal athletes themselves during next month’s PBR World Finals, they have NOT been holding back as the postseason gauntlet quickly approaches. Sure, No. 1 Man Hater has a bit of a cushion between himself and No. 2 UTZ BesTex Legend as things sit right now. But it’s the latter who’s staying in shape and providing thrills while Man Hater is resting up ahead of World Finals. Teaming up with the “Legendary” rider in Sage Steele Kimzey on Sunday, he was awarded the second title of the week, courtesy of his 44.75-point bull score.

But when it comes to the highest bull score overall, it was BLACKTOOTH’s 1.93 seconds of work against Keyshawn Whitehorse in Everett which stole the honors. Bringing the veteran’s week to a close with quite the exclamation mark, the rank bovine made his way up to the No. 18 rank during his late-season surge. Just his 11th out of the 2024 season, he improved to a flawless 10-0 before returning to action three nights later. Making quick work of veteran Alex Cerqueira in Sunday’s short go, he added another notch to his win column on his way to a perfect 11-0!

1405.33: We can’t talk numbers without mentioning the tour’s top-ranked rider in No. 1 Cassio Dias, who experienced a bit of a down week out west. Just a combined 1-for-4 on the weekend after declining his Round 1 score in Everett, instead opting into a re-ride opportunity, which he wasn’t able to convert in, his lone ride, dancing with Sky Walker, came in at just 85.25 points as the world title favorite and 2024 PBR Rookie of the Year frontrunner suddenly looked mortal for the first time all season.

Having competed in all 22 of the tour’s events this season, it would be easy to say he’s just tired, or that his knee injury was flaring up over the weekend. For each of the other 44-some riders set to qualify for next month’s 2024 PBR World Finals, his unideal set of performances (19th, followed by a rare, placeless finish) could represent the very opportunity the pack has been seeking all season, with No. 2 John Crimber just 494.5 points behind the all-world talent.
