Alan de Souza wins sold-out PBR Everett to maintain hold on No. 5 spot in world standings

04.19.24 - Unleash The Beast

Alan de Souza wins sold-out PBR Everett to maintain hold on No. 5 spot in world standings

No. 2 John Crimber finished second to gain ground on No. 1 Cassio Dias, who uncharacteristically went 0-for-2.

By Mandi McCary

EVERETT, Wash. – With the No. 1 PBR (Professional Bull Rider) rider in the world edged out of the championship round on Thursday night after not securing a ride in the two opening rounds, Alan De Souza (Taubate, Brazil) stepped up to win the Unleash The Beast (UTB) PBR Everett as the only man to go 3-for-3 across the two weeknights in the Pacific Northwest.

Souza, who rides for the Nashville Stampede in the separate PBR Teams league, collected his first UTB event win of the 2024 season to earn 134.5 Unleash The Beast points and hold tight to the No. 5 spot in the Unleash The Beast World Championship standings.

Rookie sensation John Crimber’s (Decatur, Texas) bid for his second career elite series win was dashed by Souza’s victory. Crimber had been a perfect 2-for-2 going into the championship round and seeded first in the short go but couldn’t convert for the win in the final moments.

Souza trails world leader Cassio Dias (Sao F. de Sales, Brazil) by 647.33 points with two events remaining before the 2024 PBR World Finals, beginning May 9 in Fort Worth, Texas.

The rare, two-day midweek event at Angel of the Winds Arena marks the third time the elite tour has visited Everett and the 21st UTB event of the 2024 season.

As time dwindles down on the regular season, Dias had an uncharacteristically flawed two nights. The Kansas City Outlaws man hit the ground hard in Round 1 when Bubba G (Dakota Rodeo/ Brian & Ashley Pintar/ Clay Struve/ Chad Berger) dispatched him after 3.88 seconds. His Thursday night Round 2 matchup with Mojo Bone (Blake Sharp) was equally as disappointing for the world leader, as he was unseated at 3.78 seconds. The two combined buckoffs left him outside the cut for the championship round.

Despite the streak of bad luck in Everett, over the past weekend in Billings, Dias clinched the top spot in the Unleash The Beast standings heading into the Elimination Rounds of the PBR World Finals and a chance to ride for the PBR World Championship inside AT&T Stadium the following weekend.

Now enjoying his fourteenth consecutive week occupying the No. 1 spot in the standings, the 22-year-old Brazilian cowboy is currently 10-for-15 (66.67%) in championship rounds, the second-highest riding percentage in the final round for all riders with multiple championship round performances.

Souza started the week by conquering Get At Me (Diamond C Cattle Co) for 83.25 points to win Round 1, coming in ninth. When Thursday’s second round began, he had his eyes set on Smoke Down (Humpz and Hornz/ Frances Daily), who he rode for 86.75 points for a shared fourth-place round finish.

Heading into the championship round, the steadfast Brazilian cowboy set his sights on Centerfold (Blake Sharp/ Michael Floyd).

Launching from the chutes, Souza received 85.5 points, securing the No. 1 spot in the final round. Souza’s fate then rested on the final three outs of the weekend, including Crimber’s matchup with Flapjack (Parker/ OK Corralis/ Gordon/ D&H Catle). However, Crimber was bucked off at 7.66 seconds, securing the win for Souza.

The 30-year-old rider left Angel of the Winds Arena with a check for $54,641 and the No. 5 spot.

Now sitting 504.50 points behind world leader Dias, Crimber slid to the No. 3 spot in the standings courtesy of Eduardo Aparecido’s (Gouvelandia, Brazil) win the previous weekend in Billings, Montana where he claimed the No. 2 spot.

Despite a struggle in the championship round, Crimber did nab second place for the weekend, courtesy of placing first in both opening rounds and going 2-for-3. The doubled-up round wins in Everett reset his record for most single-season round wins by an 18-year-old in PBR history at 10.

Starting the two-day event paired with Try Me (Humpz and Hornz/ Frances Dandy) in Round 1 for 88.5 points, Crimber was on fire.

Matched with Brown Bomber (Culp Bucking Bulls) in Round 2 on Saturday, he again fired from the chutes with a vengeance, recording a solid 88-point ride to again capture first place in the round.

Flipping to the dirt at 7.66 seconds in the final round, Crimber shook himself off and still managed a wave for fans as he exited the arena.

The rookie standout earned 106 Unleash The Beast points for his second-place finish. He is now a miniscule 8.17 points behind Aparecido in the world title race.

Oklahoma Wildcatters man Kyler Oliver (Roy, Utah) claimed third place in Everett after also going 2-for-3.

Matched with Texas Rain (Dakota Rodeo/ Chad Berger/ Pronghorn Well Service), Oliver earned 87 points for his Round 1 ride for a good start to the weekend leaderboard, tied with fellow Utah cowboy Keyshawn Whitehorse (McCracken Spring, Utah).

Oliver resumed his momentum in Round 2, matched with Prime Tested (Blake Sharp/ Koe Wetzel/ Travis Austin/ Henry Wilson), earning a crowd-pleasing 86.75-point ride to share fourth place in the round with Souza.

He then came into the championship round second in the aggregate. With the second overall pick in the draft, he chose Dark Thoughts (Blake Sharp/ Henry Wilson). Despite the support of the sold-out crowd, the bull twisted in midair and Oliver was dispatched after a mere 2.12 seconds.

His 2-for-3 week earned him 69 Unleash The Beast Points to move him from No. 45 in the standings to No. 38.

Daylon Swearingen (Piffard, New York) kept the 2-for-3 streak going for a fourth-place finish in Everett.

The Carolina Cowboys athlete came bursting from the chutes aboard Gangster Blues (Blake Sharp/ UB Bucking Company) on Wednesday night for 85.25 points.

For his efforts, he split seventh place in the opening round with Alex Cerqueria (Iguatemi, Brazil).

On Thursday night, the 2022 World Champion brought the same energy as he bested Zeus (Blake Sharp/ Michael Floyd) for 86.25 points to claim sixth place in Round 2.

Selecting Snake Eyes (D&H Cattle Company) as the championship round began, the 24-year-old was no match for the animal athlete and was dispatched at 3.45 seconds.

With the fourth-place finish, Swearingen earned 47.5 Unleash The Beast Points to move from No. 19 in the standings to No. 17.

Ezekiel Mitchell (Rockdale, Texas) rounded out the Top 5 of the PBR Everett.

In Round 1 of the rare midweek event, the Austin Gamblers athlete was paired with bovine Electric Kitty (Moore Cattle/ D&H Cattle Co.). To the energetic crowd’s dismay, Mitchell was thrown to the dirt in 5.73 seconds.

The 27-year-old cowboy fired from the chutes in Round 2 aboard Fort Knox (D&H Cattle Co./ Tripp Ranch/ RF Livestock). Seeking redemption after his Round 1 buckoff, Mitchell came out victorious, scoring 87.5 points and clinching second in the round.

The Texas cowboy was given a re-ride, matched with DirtyBru (D&H Cattle Co./ Gordon/ OK Corralis) in Thursday night’s championship round after judges declared MAGA (Blake Sharp/ Utz/ Carey/ Chaney) problematic to Mitchell’s out.

DirtyBru exploded from the chutes as Mitchell tried to hang on. Despite his best attempt, he flipped to the dirt at only 1.49 seconds.

Earning 35 Unleash The Beast points, Mitchell, who began the weekend at No. 37, now sits at No. 33 in the world.

In the bull pen, Blacktooth (Blake Sharp/ Henry Wilson/ Michael Floyd) earned the YETI “Built for the Wild” Bull of the Event honor with a 45.25-point bull score by bucking off Whitehorse in a lightning-fast 1.93 seconds in Thursday’s championship round.

The PBR Unleash The Beast next travels to the Tacoma Dome in Tacoma, Washington, for the PBR Tacoma, presented by Cooper Tires, the 22nd event of the 2024 season, on Saturday, April 20, at 6:45 p.m. PDT, and Sunday, April 21, at 1:45 p.m. PDT.
