Week 4 PBR Camping World Team Series power rankings

Gamblers heating up at two spot, while Freedom jump to No. 6 and Cowboys remain atop the pack.

By James Youness

PUEBLO, Colo. — The PBR Camping World Team Series continues to provide dramatic thrills, rank rides and some badass celebrations as the 5-on-5 tour continues to wow crowds around the country.

A quick glance at the current league standings shows just how dramatic the first three weeks of camaraderie-driven action have been, as nine of the 10 squads have either two, three or four wins at this point. Zooming in a click, seven of those nine are caught at either three or four wins, as the (6-0-1) Carolina Cowboys continue to dominate early-season game play.

The league’s top dawgs racked up a 1-0-1 record inside Amerant Bank Arena last weekend, which included a rare tie between Carolina and the (4-3-1) Oklahoma Wildcatters, who have enjoyed quite the energizing start, themselves.

But we can’t get past the fourth graph without mentioning the hometown (3-4) Florida Freedom, who parlayed their 2-1 record and pair of Shootout Round wins into a No. 6 ranking in both the league standings and Week 4 power rankings.

Specifically, their franchise pillar in John Crimber, who sits atop the MVP race with a tour-best 7-for-8 after showing up and showing out for his team’s new fans.

And after leaving its 1-3 start in the dust, the (4-3) Austin Gamblers took advantage of their first three-game weekend by drumming up some momentum.

On the opposite side of the spectrum, several teams didn’t have their best weekends in Sunrise, Florida, including the winless (2-5) Texas Rattlers and the roller coaster Nashville Stampede (3-4).

One quarter of the 2024 campaign is already in the past, with nine regular season events remaining ahead before the tour shifts gears to postseason mode in Las Vegas. It’s pretty clear that Carolina intends on punching their ticket to the big dance sooner than later, but the other five spots inside T-Mobile Arena are very much up for grabs.

The team-based drama is primed to resume inside Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York, with all of this summer’s action set to air on Merit Street and the Merit+ App, continuing Friday night at 9 p.m. EST.

Fans can stay tuned to the league’s official 2024 PBR Camping World Teams Series standings here throughout the action-packed season and are encouraged to share their own rankings with us on @PBR social media channels!

No. 1: Carolina Cowboys (Week 3 Rank: No. 1) After exiting a showdown against the Oklahoma Wildcatters Sunday afternoon via the league’s first tie at 175.25-175.25, the Carolina Cowboys are technically still undefeated, now 6-0-1. Adriano Salgado, Daylon Swearingen and Sage Steele Kimzey did their respective parts in helping the team, for sure. But as long as Cooper Davis can continue to get his team off to a hot start, now 6-for-7 as Carolina’s lead-off guy, they will be just fine as year three continues to heat up!

They’re the unquestioned leaders within the 5-on-5 landscape, more than 220 aggregate points above the league’s newest darlings in Oklahoma.

No. 2: Austin Gamblers (Week 3 Rank: No. 5) In the actual betting world, it’s either red or black. But after seeing the Gamblers string together a flawless 3-0 record at PBR Teams: Freedom Days en route to getting back above the .500 mark, we’re betting on green for the rest of the season. Now on a five-out ride streak after going a perfect 3-for-3 in Sunrise, two-time PBR Teams MVP Jose Vitor Leme reminded the pack he’s here and healthy, eventually leaving Amerant Bank Arena ranked No. 3 in the aggregate score standings. If 2018 World Champion Kaique Pacheco can continue to convert and Dalton Kasel can return from injury sooner than later (not to mention helpful contributions from Ezekiel Mitchell, Ramon de Lima and company like we saw over the weekend), Austin will very much be a contender down the stretch here. And when you throw in a Texas Cup series-opening win over their instate rivals down in Fort Worth, does it get much better in Week 3?

No. 3: Oklahoma Wildcatters (Week 3 Rank: No. 4) Trailing only the No. 1 Carolina Cowboys in team aggregate score, average game score and the official PBR Camping World Team Series rankings themselves, the Oklahoma Wildcatters aren’t performing like an expansion squad. They’re staying composed and knocking down rides like they’ve been around the block. One of now four squads sitting at matching 4-3 records, Oklahoma continues to lead on youngsters in Cort McFadden and Clay Guiton to lead the way. And that’s exactly what the duo has done through three weeks, currently occupying the No. 7 and No. 8 spots in the MVP race, respectively. Making the team the only unit with three riders currently ranked in the Top 10, Eduardo Matos’ 4-for-8 start sure hasn’t hurt their favorable start. Set to travel to Brooklyn, New York, this weekend as their fellow year one rivals in the New York Mavericks make their hometown debut, can J.B. Mauney keep his guys in the win column? We think so.

No. 4: Kanas City Outlaws (Week 3 Rank: No. 3) At the beginning of the season, we didn’t anticipate the fresh bunch of un-bonded cowboys in the Wildcatters to be ranked above 2024 World Champion Cassio Dias and his Kansas City Outlaws just yet. But a quick glance at both this week’s power rankings and the official league standings show that is exactly the case. Dias, now 4-for-9 and occupying the No. 9 spot in the MVP race, is very much expected to take this squad where they want to go. But in the midst of a rare five-out buckoff streak, the defending Champ has been looking rather mortal lately. Thankfully for the 4-3 unit, Sandro Batista has been rounding himself back into form, while Koltin Hevalow went 2-for-2 on the weekend, now successful in each of his last three outs and 5-for-7 on the season.

Kansas City supporters need not worry too much, as we know Dias will rebound in a big way. And in general, the Outlaws have been competitive in almost every game they’ve been apart of so far, so we expect the J.W. Hart-coached team to be just fine heading into Week 4.

No. 5 Arizona Ridge Riders (Week 3 Rank: No. 2) Knowing what the Arizona Ridge Riders are capable of means recognizing their 1-1 weekend was a bit of a missed opportunity, all things considered. They made the Gamblers earn their win for the most part, as Austin posted three rides to Arizona’s two, but we’ve seen this Ridge Riders squad squeak out four a few times already this season, which is closer to the expectation Head Coach Colby Yates has set for the electric bunch. Later taking care of business against the Mavericks, albeit via just a two-ride, 4.25-point win, it was good to see them beat a team they were supposed to find success against. But they did not show up looking like the heavy-hitting squad we’ve seen in the past. They’ll hope that changes in Brooklyn, as a pair of tests against the Florida Freedom and Kansas City Outlaws await them out east. That said, Keyshawn Whitehorse is off to the hottest 5-on-5 start of his career, which bodes well for an Arizona squad who’s in it for the long run.

No. 6: Florida Freedom (Week 3 Rank: No. 8) They may have stumbled during their first-ever contest inside Amerant Bank Arena, but the Freedom went on to win everything else they could as the weekend continued, eventually beating both the Oklahoma Wildcatters and Missouri Thunder before securing a pair of Shootout Round wins on nights two and three. The driving force behind said rebound effort? One John Crimber, the 18-year-old who finds himself atop the MVP standings via his cool 7-for-8 start.

And while he’s been on fire for the entirety of the series so far, he actually got some help this time around (and we aren’t talking about the ever-engaged audience, either!) Seeing Joao Lucas Campos, Elizmar Jeremias and Alex Cerqueira come alive as the weekend progressed, the red, white and blue team ended the weekend with a big BANG, turning in their second 4-for-5 slate of the season before seeing Thiago Salgado seal the deal in Shootout fashion. 2-1 on the weekend and now 3-4 overall, fans and fellow squads alike should keep an eye on the Freedom, as they’re plenty potent when Crimber is getting some support.

No. 7: Missouri Thunder (Week 3 Rank: No. 9) There’s not much you can do, other than ride bulls, when the Carolina Cowboys show up as your opening night opponent. And while they turned in a pair of quality qualified rides, courtesy of Grayson Cole and Paulo Eduardo Rossetto, the Missouri Thunder needed a third 8, eventually dropping the contest 262-179. Had they not squeaked out an 83.75-0 win over the Nashville Stampede, they’d be a spot or two lower in both the power rankings and league standings.

But Rossetto was able to extend his productive start to the weekend as he dug the boys out late in dramatic fashion. However when Sunday came around, Missouri found itself on the wrong side of the result, dropping a 331.25-85.25 game to the hometown Freedom. Just 4-for-15 on the weekend, they need more out of Boudreaux Campbell and Andrew Alvidrez if they want to improve on their 3-5 start. They’ve been in their fair share of games this season but just can’t seem to get many three and four-ride efforts flowing early. Cole, however, now 3-for-7, has been a bright spot lately for the up and down Thunder.

No. 8: Nashville Stampede (Week 3 Rank: No. 6) They technically sit just above the Thunder in the official league standings but after seeing Nashville drop the head-to-head showdown to Missouri last weekend at PBR Teams: Freedom Days, we’ve got the Justin McBride-coached group down at No. 8 ahead of Week 4. Dropping both of the contests on the weekend is one thing, as there’s plenty of quality competition out there these days. But going just 1-for-10 on the weekend, with veteran Cody Teel providing the team’s lone conversion on the weekend, that’s not the performance McBride and folks were looking for after the squad’s 3-2 start. On the flip side, it was good to see the 32-year-old veteran step in and get the Stampede on the board Sunday.

Two outs for any cowboy won’t define them, just as last weekend’s 10 don’t represent what Nashville has planned for 2024. But the 2022 Champs will need to crank up the consistency, starting this weekend at Barclays Center, if they want to stay out of South Point.

No. 9: Texas Rattlers (Week 3 Rank: No. 7) It wasn’t a great weekend for another squad who only got two opportunities to dance, as the Texas Rattlers also suffered an 0-2 slate in Sunrise. Falling to their instate rival Austin Gamblers Saturday by one ride before dropping a 2.75-point loss to the Kansas City Outlaws, they were displaying some grittiness during their games but just couldn’t close the door in either of them. Marcelo Procopio Pereira has been the team’s hottest rider this season, now 4-for-6, which also means the likes of Daniel Keeping, Brady Fielder, Joao Ricardo Vieira and company aren’t warmed up for the summer just yet. Tied with three other teams with the second-fewest conversions this season at 12, the defending Champs need to piece some things together if they want to reverse this 2-5 start to 2024.

No. 10 New York Mavericks (Week 3 Rank: No. 10) After starting the season 0-4, a 2-5 record ahead of Week 4 is actually a breath of fresh air for the New York Mavericks, who are now 2-1 in their last three. They split their pair of Freedom Days matchups, serving as the bad guys Friday night during a win over the hometown Freedom before falling to Arizona Saturday. But you can tell the year one squad is getting used to this whole thing, recording a pair of rides in both of their contests (after bringing just two combined qualified rides into the Week 3 meet-up.) Which is exactly what Head Coach Kody Lostroh has been looking for from his banged-up roster of cowboys.

Leandro Machado, now 2-for-4, has been the team’s brightest star so far, but it’s been good to Braidy Randolph get some momentum flowing, who was a perfect 2-for-2 in Sunrise. With their first-ever homestand approaching this weekend, they’d be wise to put their best (healthiest) foot forward in putting on a show for the Brooklyn faithful!
