Three-time World Champion Bull Bushwacker passes away

Stock contractors Julio Moreno and Dallas Schott announced the peaceful passing of the 18-year-old bull.

By Darci Miller

PUEBLO, Colo. – Stock contractors Julio Moreno and Dallas Schott announced on Wednesday the passing of legendary three-time World Champion Bull Bushwacker (2006-2024).

Bushwacker, the biggest bovine star the sport has ever seen, was 18 years old at the time of his passing. He retired in 2014 after winning his world titles in 2011, 2013 and 2014.

Bushwacker had a storied six-year career, bucking from 2009-2014. He became a fan favorite as he racked up buckoffs, including a streak of 42 consecutive premier-series buckoffs – a record that stood for more than 10 years until the 2024 PBR World Finals. According to Pro Bull Stats, Bushwacker was 64-2 on the premier series with an average bull score of 46.16 points. Overall, he defeated 84 of his 87 opponents since his first out in 2009.

The bull was also known for his rivalry with J.B. Mauney, who famously ended Bushwacker’s streak with a 95.25-point ride in Tulsa, Oklahoma, on August 17, 2013. It was Mauney’s ninth time attempting to ride Bushwacker.

"I was just hanging on," Mauney admitted at the time.

Bushwacker’s final out was at the 2014 PBR World Finals, when he dispatched Mike Lee for 46.5 points to secure his record-tying third world title.

"I would compare him to a Michael Jordan and a Ray Lewis put together," Moreno told PBR.com in 2011. "Michael Jordan was the best there was shooting a basketball and Ray Lewis is the toughest guy in pro football on defense. So, when you put those combinations together, offense and defense, that's everything. Bushwacker is the total package."

During his career, Bushwacker was featured in “The Wall Street Journal,” the body issue of “ESPN The Magazine,” “USA Today,” “CBS This Morning,” ESPN’s award-winning series “E:60” and numerous other media features—making him the most famous bovine in history.

Bushwacker is one of only six back-to-back PBR World Champion Bulls. He, Ridin Solo (2022-23), Smooth Operator (2019-20), SweetPro’s Bruiser (2016-2018), Little Yellow Jacket (2002-2004) and Dillinger (2000-2001) are the only bulls to pull off the monumental accomplishment. He, Little Yellow Jacket and SweetPro’s Bruiser are the only bulls in PBR history to have won three world titles.

He received the PBR Brand of Honor in 2016.

"That bull is everything," nine-time world champion and PBR co-founder Ty Murray told PBR.com in 2011. "He's like Michael Jordan. If you go down the list of attributes that a bull should have, you have to give him an A for all of them. He's big, He's strong. He's fast. He's quick. He's smart. He feels for the rider. He has huge jumps and huge kicks. He's really powerful.

"When he lurches forward, it's a big-time lurch. Everything about him is great. He's not a one-trick pony."

Even the best bull men in the business were impressed by Bushwacker’s caliber.

“Bushwacker is the best the PBR has ever seen,” said Cody Lambert, PBR’s co-founder, former director of livestock, and current head coach of the Texas Rattlers, in 2014. “In fact, he’s the best I’ve ever seen, and I’ve been around for a long time. We may never see one of his caliber again.”

The PBR extends its condolences to Julio Moreno Bucking Bulls.

PBR.com will have more on Bushwacker’s legacy in the coming days.
