Key Storylines...
The New York Mavericks (5-18) roll back into Belmont Park for Mavericks Days with redemption on their minds and a chip on their shoulder. After enduring a record-setting 10-game skid, New York has found a spark, winning two of its last three, and now gets the chance to flip the script on home dirt.
The Nashville Stampede (7-16) arrive with a lineup that suddenly feels dangerous. Rookie Gustavo Luiz da Silva has taken over the closer role with confidence, while veteran Alan de Souza continues to set the tone. Add in Daniel Feitosa and Rogério Venâncio — two Brazilian riders the Stampede were willing to gamble future draft capital on — and this group has teeth. Feitosa may have been banged up when they brought him in, but bones heal. Nashville is betting big that this young trio can grow into something special, with Alan’s steady hand guiding the way.
The Florida Freedom (18-5) remain the team to beat. Behind MVP frontrunners John Crimber and Thiago Salgado, Florida has turned dominance into routine, blanking Austin 5-0 in Anaheim and showing no signs of slowing down. The Freedom may have caught a couple of lucky breaks in North Carolina, but don’t think for a second this team isn’t capable of walking into any arena and laying down a full house on the table. Their showdown with New York on Saturday will be the ultimate test for the Mavericks — and another chance for Florida to tighten its grip on the No. 1 spot.
No matter where you look, John Crimber keeps popping up. The 19-year-old phenom has been logging more practice bulls than anyone on his team — riding without shoes in North Carolina as he prepares for the concrete jungle of New York City. He may not love the weight room, but he’s all about reps, rhythm and raw toughness. Whether it’s in a Florida jersey chasing MVP honors or under the bright lights of New York, Crimber has become the rider every fan — and every rival — is watching.
The Carolina Cowboys (11-12) arrive in Belmont Park red-hot after sweeping Greensboro. Derek Kolbaba’s shoulder popped out mid-air on Sunday, but the veteran still showed up swinging. Clay Guiton delivered a storybook walk-off in front of family, and Cooper Davis is grinding his way back from a back issue. Jess Lockwood, however, will not ride this weekend after taking a pelvis shot, leaving Carolina to rely even more on its depth. And don’t overlook the talented Ethan Winkler, who shrugs off challenges with his trademark, “Hey, I got it.” Carolina suddenly looks like a team built for a playoff push.
