Cauy Schmidt won the PBR Canada Touring Pro Division event in Marwayne, Alberta.

By Kacie Albert

MARWAYNE, Alta. – Friday night in Marwayne, Alberta, 2022 PBR (Professional Bull Riders) Canada Rookie of the Year Cauy Schmidt (Coronation, Alberta) rode in dominant form, delivering a perfect 2-for-2 performance to win the Touring Pro Division’s 14th Annual Marwayne PBR. The win vaulted Schmidt from unranked to No. 12 in the race for the 2025 PBR Canada Championship and accompanying $1 million bonus.

Schmidt first put points on the board when he tied for the Round 1 win, covering World Wide (Thompson Rodeo Livestock) for 86 points.

The young Albertan then cemented the event win, the second of his career, when he conquered Pyper (Foley Bucking Bulls) for an event-best 89 points in the championship round.

The golden finish garnered Schmidt a crucial 60.5 national points as he rose from unranked to No. 12 in the standings. He is now within 125 points of the No. 1 ranking.

Jake Gardner (Fort St. John, British Columbia) registered a flawless 2-for-2 outing of his own, finishing third at the Marwayne Agriplex and overtaking the No. 1 rank in the Canadian standings.

Gardner rode Shut Up & Ride (Thompson Rodeo Livestock) for 83 points in Round 1, before going the distance on MoBamba (Thompson Rodeo Livestock) for 88 points in the final round.

Netting 31.5 national points, Gardner climbed from No. 3 to No. 1 in Canada, now 15.5 points ahead of No. 2 Nick Tetz (Calgary, Alberta).

Returning to the top of the event leaderboard, Ashton Sahli (Red Deer, Alberta) was second, collecting 43.5 national points.

Sahli’s silver showing was earned compliments of an 84.5-point effort atop Pay Day (Skori Bucking Bulls) in Round 1, and 88-point trip aboard Boogey (Foley Bucking Bulls) in the final round.

Chasing his first PBR Canada Championship this November, Sahli climbed from No. 11 to No. 5 in the standings, propelled within 89.5 points of No. 1 Gardner.

As the final rider to cover both of his animal athlete opponents, Jordan Hansen (Amisk, Alberta) was fourth.

Hansen earned 27 national points for his 83-point ride on Classy Nasty (Foley Bucking Bulls) in Round 1, and 87-point score on Time Marches On (Thompson Rodeo Livestock) in the championship round.

The veteran contender remained No. 4 in Canada. He is now 51.5 points behind No. 1 Gardner.

Rounding out the Top 5 was three-time PBR Canada Champion Aaron Roy (Yellow Grass, Saskatchewan).

While Roy tied for the Round 1 win alongside Shmidt, outlasting Times A Wasting (Thompson Rodeo Livestock) for 86 points, he failed to convert in the final round, tossed by Patiently Waiting (Skori Bucking Bulls) in a close 5.28 seconds.

Roy left Marwayne with 19.5 national points. Seeking his unprecedented fourth Canadian Championship, Roy rose from No. 21 to No. 17 in Canada.

In the bull pen, Pyper bucked a cut above the rest, crowned the Bull of the Event. The powerful animal athlete was marked an unmatched 44 points when he teamed with Schmidt for the event-best, 89-point score in the final round.
