BANGOR, Maine – After the dust settled inside Cross Insurance Center at the Kubota PBR (Professional Bull Riders) Bangor, Dawson Gleaves (Amarillo, Texas) emerged victorious with a perfect 3-for-3 performance.
The Texan topped Game Day (C-B Bucking Bulls) for a round-winning 85.5 points in Round 1 before sitting tall aboard Dust Buster (Lucky E Eodeo) for 73 points in Round 2.
In the third round, Gleaves became the only rider to make the 8 for a third time, riding Poker Face (J Bar W) for 84 points.
Despite being ruled out of competition for the championship round due to injury, Gleaves had done enough to win the event title and take home 146 Velocity Global points.
In second place was Chase Wimer (Corning, California).
The California cowboy was bucked off by Gunsmoke (Lucas Manning Bucking Bulls) in 3.49 seconds in Round 1 and Helena’s Pet (J Bar W) in 1.69 seconds in Round 2.
However, Wimer proved his resilience, roaring back to top Red Rum (Mike Miller Bucking Bulls) for 85.5 points in Round 3 and Pillow Talk (Lucas Manning Bucking Bulls) for a round-winning and event-high 88 points in the championship round to skyrocket up to second.
The silver finish netted Wimer 109 Velocity Global points.
The final spot on the podium belonged to Douglas Lino de Souza (Morro Agudo, Brazil).
Matched with Tigger (C-B Bucking Bulls) in Round 1, the Brazilian was bested in 2.02 seconds.
Souza then rallied in Round 2 aboard Oklahoma Smokeshow (Dave Martin/Mike Miller Bucking Bulls) for 81.5 points to climb to fourth in the event standings.
Carrying his momentum over to championship Sunday, Souza rode Bucking Bill (Lucas Manning Bucking Bulls) for 84.5 points in Round 3 to secure his spot in the final round.
The Brazilian rocketed out of the chutes atop Cash Goblin (Dave Martin/Mike Miller Bucking Bulls) but was bested in 1.51 seconds.
The 2-for-4 performance earned Souza 78 Velocity Global points.
Andy Bohl (St. Cloud, Florida) finished fourth.
After riding Redneck Rumble (Dave Martin/Mike Miller Bucking Bulls) for 80.5 points in Round 1, Bohl was unseated in 5.17 seconds by Parrot Head (C-B Bucking Bulls) in Round 2.
The Floridian began his Sunday by being bucked off by Chicken Express (Lucas Manning Bucking Bulls) in 2.61 seconds in Round 3 before rebounding to ride Bone Digger (Lucas Manning Bucking Bulls) for 83.5 points in the championship round.
Bohl returned home with 61 Velocity Global points.
Rounding out the Top 5 was Marcus Mast (Middlebury, Indiana).
Despite being bested by Evad Nitram (Dave Martin/Mike Miller Bucking Bulls) in 5.78 seconds in Round 1 and Demonic (Lucas Manning Bucking Bulls) in 3.81 seconds in Round 2, the savvy veteran kept his calm.
Paired with New Dinero (C-B Bucking Bulls) in Round 3, Mast moved in perfect time with the powerful bovine competitor for a round-winning 87 points.
However, Cockeye (Mike Miller Bucking Bulls) got the better of the Indiana cowboy in the championship round, bucking him off in 1.72 seconds.
Mast left Cross Insurance Center with 51 Velocity Global points.
Velocity Global points contribute to the Velocity Global Standings and determine which new riders are added to the elite Unleash The Beast throughout the season. The Top 3 Velocity Global riders who have not already qualified are also invited to the PBR World Finals in May.
In the bull pen, Pillow Talk, Chicken Express and Blue Stone (Lucas Manning Bucking Bulls) were all marked 43 points to split the Bull of the Event title.
While the Pendleton Whisky Velocity Tour bucks in Bangor and Lexington, Kentucky, the elite Unleash The Beast competes in North Little Rock, Arkansas.
