EVERETT, Wash. – As the opening night of the PBR (Professional Bull Riders) Pendleton Whisky Velocity Tour’s (PWVT) PBR Everett at Angel of the Winds Arena concluded on Friday, Guthrie Long (Pecos, Texas) emerged victorious.
One of only five men to successfully conquer the animal athletes they were paired with, the 37-year-old cowboy navigated every jump and twist aboard BG Creek for an 83-point ride, clinching the Round 1 win.
Later in the evening, the Texas cowboy was paired with Nigel’s Pet. To the Washington crowd’s dismay, the bovine won this matchup, throwing Long to the dirt after 3.4 seconds.
Despite the setback on his second bull, Long earned 28 Velocity Global points and heads into Championship Saturday leading the charge.
Velocity Global points contribute to the Velocity Global Standings and determine which new riders are added to the elite Unleash The Beast throughout the season. The Top 3 Velocity Global riders who have not already qualified are also invited to the PBR World Finals in May.
Kyle Eaton (Chico, California) secured second place on the event leaderboard courtesy of his action-packed matchup with Kwik Lock for 82.5 points early in the round.
Unfortunately, Eaton’s second matchup did not go as well.
In addition to sailing into Saturday as Everett’s No. 2 man, Eaton earned 18 Velocity Global points.
Third place in Everett’s opening night went to Gavin Knutson (Polson, Montana) for his 81.5-point matchup with Gator Drool, which netted him 17 Velocity Global points.
California cowboy Aaron Williams (Pismo Beach, California) was paired with Say When in the opening round and was in complete control from the moment the chutes flew open. Williams scored 80 points for his Round 1 ride, earning him a fourth-place finish and 16 Velocity Global points.
Arizona cowboy Jaxton Mortenson (Chino Valley, Arizona) rounded out the Top 5 for the sold-out evening in Washington.
In Round 1, Mortenson was paired with Uncle Nene. After 4.09 seconds, the bull was victorious, throwing the 20-year-old cowboy to the dirt.
Matching up with Fever Dreams later in the night, Mortenson clung for the whistle. As the only man to best his opponent in the second round, Mortenson scored 79.5 points.
Along with his fifth-place finish headed into Saturday, Mortenson earned 27 Velocity Global points.
PBR Everett will continue at the Angel of the Winds Arena on Saturday, Feb. 15 at 7 p.m. PST.
