PORTLAND, Ore. – As Round 1 of the PBR (Professional Bull Riders) Pendleton Whisky Velocity Tour’s (PWVT) season-opening PBR Portland at the Moda Center concluded on Friday night, Andy Guzman (Oakdale, California) emerged victorious.

One of only nine men to successfully conquer the animal athletes they were paired with, the 21-year-old cowboy navigated every jump aboard Billy Bob for an 86.5-point ride, clinching the Round 1 win.

Guzman earned 28 Velocity Global points for his round win and heads into Saturday’s Round 2 leading the charge.

Velocity Global points contribute to the Velocity Global Standings and determine which new riders are added to the elite Unleash The Beast throughout the season. The Top 3 Velocity Global riders who have not already qualified are also invited to the PBR World Finals in May.

Fellow Californian Eric Novoa (Vacaville, California) secured second place in Round 1 courtesy of his action-packed matchup with Smoke Screen for 85.5 points on Friday night. In addition to sailing into Saturday’s second round, Novoa earned 18 Velocity Global points. 

Third place in Portland’s opening round went to Dalton Rudman (Wellington, Utah) for his 85-point matchup with Get At Me.

His efforts netted the 29-year-old cowboy 17 Velocity Global points. 

Arizona cowboy Darnell Bahe (Jeddito, Arizona) was paired with Nigel’s Pet and was in complete control from the moment the chutes flew open. Along with a fourth-place finish in Round 1, Bahe collected 16 Velocity Global points for his 83-point score.

Missouri Thunder athlete Trace Redd (Malad, Idaho) rounded out the Top 5 with an 82-point ride aboard his bovine opponent Wiley.

In addition to punching his ticket to Round 2, the cowboy earned 15 Velocity Global points. 

PBR Portland will continue at the Moda Center on Saturday, Jan. 4, at 7 p.m. PST with Round 2, immediately followed by the championship round.
