DENVER, Colo. – As three nights of nonstop action at the PBR (Professional Bull Riders) Pendleton Whisky Velocity Tour’s (PWVT) Denver PBR Chute Out at the National Western Stock Show concluded on Wednesday night, 89 of the top bull riders in the world were no match for Alan de Souza (Taubate, Brazil), who claimed the win.
The rare midweek event in Denver showcased a unique format for fans. The initial lineup featured 90 riders competing in Round 1, which split riders into two groups across the first two nights of competition.
On Monday night, 45 riders each attempted one bull. Round 1 then concluded on Tuesday with the remaining 45 riders who did not compete Monday, attempting one bull each. With both Velocity Global points and Unleash The Beast points on the line, the competition was at an all-time high.
For Monday’s opening round, Souza teamed up with Revival for a less than ideal 72.5 points. The score punched his ticket into Round 2 on Wednesday night, but the lanky Nashville Stampede athlete had a lot of ground to gain sit-ting in the No. 24 spot on the leaderboard.
As Round 2 began on Wednesday night, the Top 30 riders from Round 1 readied themselves to each face another bull in hopes of punching their ticket into the championship round. The 15 bull riders with the top combined ride scores following the first two rounds then advanced to the final championship round.
In Round 2, Souza was paired with Renegade, firing out of the chutes for an impressive 83 points to commandeer sixth place.
Laser-focused in the championship round on Wednesday night, the 33-year-old Brazilian was matched with Dialed In. Rocketing out of the chutes and bouncing across the dirt – Souza clinched the event victory with an 84-point score.
For his 3-for-3 week, Souza leaves Colorado with a check for $19,979.97 and 112 Velocity Global points, putting him at No. 26 in the Velocity standings and No. 12 in the world standings.
Miguel de Jesus (Campo Alegre de Goias, Brazil) claimed second place in Denver after also going 3-for-3.
Round 1 was successful for Jesus after he conquered Semi Sober for 82.5 points.
Round 2 saw the Brazilian cowboy continue his momentum when paired with Cracker Jack. Securing an identical 82.5-point score above the monstrous bovine, he sailed into the championship round but was not as successful in his matchup with OCD, scoring a mere 63 points.
Jesus departs Colorado with 80 Velocity Global points to sit at No. 7 in the Velocity standings.
Seven-time PRCA World Champion and Austin Gamblers man Sage Kimzey went 2-for-3 at Denver Coliseum to finish in third place.
After tying for third place in Round 1 courtesy of his 87-point score on Ringling Road, Kimzey stalled out in Round 2 after Hotel Gunsel dispatched him in 4.64 seconds.
Setting his sights on the championship round, Kimzey dominated Smokin Hot to the tune of 88 points. Despite the setback in Round 2 for the 30-year-old veteran, Kimzey leaves the prestigious, time-honored event with 80.5 Velocity Global points. He now sits at No. 5 in the world.
Texas cowboy Andrew Alvidrez (Perola, Brazil) secured a fourth-place finish overall despite a setback in the final round Wednesday night.
After a commanding second-place finish ride aboard Renegade in Round 1 for 87.5 points, the 28-year-old gave Colorado fans a repeat performance in his matchup with Off The Tracks during Round 2. His second round 87-point score tied for first place and pushed him through to the championship showdown.
Headed into his final matchup of the week, the Missouri Thunder man knew he had to hit the gas. Firing out of the chutes aboard Rowdy, he gave it his all but was no match for the athletic bovine after 7.25 seconds.
His qualified ride in Rounds 1 and 2 earned him 62 Velocity Global points, moving him to No. 10 in the world standings.
Rounding out the Top 5 at the Denver Coliseum was New York Mavericks standout Leonardo Castro (Cassilandia, Brazil).
After sailing through Round 1 on Tuesday night aboard Cutting Edges Bandit for 85.5 points, Castro was paired with Show-Off in Round 2. Launching from the chutes and remaining in complete control, the 20-year-old turned in an 85-point ride.
The championship round saw a matchup of Castro and Midnight City that ended his week abruptly after just 5.4 seconds.
Castro returns home at No. 17 in the world standings after collecting 48.5 Velocity Global points for his 2-for-3 week.
The talented bull riders of the PWVT will next head to Charleston, West Virginia, for the PBR Charleston at the Charleston Coliseum Jan. 17-18. Additionally, in a double-up weekend, the PWVT will also be in Bakersfield, California, for the PBR Bakersfield on Jan. 18 at Mechanics Bank Arena.
