CHARLESTON, W.V. – After the opening night of PBR (Professional Bull Riders) Charleston, Afonso Quintino (Sao Luis dos Montes Belos, Brazil) sits alone atop the leaderboard.
The Brazilian won the opening round by topping The One (Sho-Me Rodeo/Wyloh) for 87.5 points.
Winning the first round earned Quintino 28 Velocity Global points.
Caleb Cantrell (Honea Path, South Carolina) sits second after Round 1.
Tasked with topping Rio’s Diablo (Barrett/Barnes Rodeo #2), the South Carolinian danced in perfect time with his bovine compatriot for 87 points.
Cantrell left Charleston Coliseum with 18 Velocity Global points.
In third was Bob Mitchell (Steelville, Missouri).
The Show-Me State cowboy covered Bomb Diggity (Davis Rodeo Ranch) for 86.5 points.
The ride netted Mitchell 17 Velocity Global points.
Flavio Zivieri (Balsamo, Brazil) and Seth White (Statesville, North Carolina) sit tied for fourth place.
The Brazilian cowboy made the 8 aboard Wagon Hound (Barett/Barnes Rodeo #2) for 85.5 points, while White matched him for 85.5 points of his own on Oreo (Dustin Denning Bucking Bulls).
Both cowboys garnered 15.5 Velocity Global points for their effort Friday night.
Velocity Global points contribute to the Velocity Global Standings and determine which new riders are added to the elite Unleash The Beast throughout the season. The Top 3 Velocity Global riders who have not already qualified are also invited to the PBR World Finals in May.
PBR Charleston concludes tomorrow, Saturday, Jan. 18, at 7 p.m. ET.
While the Pendleton Whisky Velocity Tour bucks in Charleston and Bakersfield, California, the elite Unleash The Beast takes over Toyota Center in Houston, Texas, for Michelob ULTRA PBR Houston.
