Nick Tetz wins Cup Series event in Medicine Hat, Alberta, with monster 90-point ride, overtaking the No. 1 rank in the race for the 2024 PBR Canada Championship

Garnering 137 national points, Tetz leapfrogged Cody Coverchuk for the No. 1 rank in Canada, now leading the standings by 32 points.

By Kacie Albert

MEDICINE HAT, Alta. – In front of a raucous Saturday night crowd in Medicine Hat, Alberta, Nick Tetz (Calgary, Alberta) swept the competition, going a perfect 2-for-2 and delivering the first 90-point ride of the season, to win the PBR (Professional Bull Riders) Canada Cup Series’ Medicine Hat Classic, overtaking the No. 1 rank in the race for the 2024 Canadian Championship and accompanying $100,000 bonus.

Tetz now leads the PBR Canada ranks in Cup Series wins with three, tonight’s victory marking his record-setting eleventh of the season. In winning both rounds of the event, Tetz has now won four Cup Series rounds, the second most of any rider. Across both the Cup Series and Touring Pro Division, Tetz has won 16 rounds, the most of any rider in PBR Canada.

Tetz got off to a sensational start in Round 1, topping the scoreboard when he teamed with House Fire (Eno Bucking Bulls) for an 86-point score.

The 2022 PBR Canada Champion then elected to go head-to-head with Langham Kid (Two Bit Bucking Bulls) in the championship round. In a decision which proved dividends, Tetz remained in perfect time with the powerful animal athlete, awarded a monstrous 90 points to clinch the victory. The effort marked the first 90-point ride of the season.

During the out, Langham Kid was awarded an unrivaled 44-point bull score, earning him the YETI “Built for the Wild” Bull of the Event title for the fourth time this season.

Courtesy of the golden finish, Tetz garnered a crucial 137 national points. He leapfrogged Cody Coverchuk (Meadow Lake, Saskatchewan) for the No. 1 rank in Canada, now leading the standings by 32 points. Coverchuk competed inside Co-op Place but was shutout, bucking off Watermelon Sugar Hi (Kinky Buckers) in 4.71 seconds.

Should Tetz continue his late season surge and win the 2024 PBR Canada Championship, he would become the fourth rider in history to win the coveted national title multiple times, joining three-time winner Aaron Roy (Yellow Grass, Saskatchewan) and two-time title holders Coverchuk and Dakota Buttar (Eatonia, Saskatchewan).

Coy Robbins (Camrose, Alberta) was second, netting 83 national points.

After topping Finger Roll (X6 Ranch Bucking Cattle/Legend Rodeo Stock) for 84 points in Round 1, 2017 PBR Canada Rookie of the Year Robbins went the distance on Dialed In (Wilson Rodeo) for 87.5 points in the final round.

Chasing his first Canadian Championship, Robbins rose from No. 6 to No. 4 in Canada. He is now 600 points behind No. 1 Tetz.

As the final rider to be flawless in Medicine Hat, reigning PBR Canada Champion Buttar was third.

Buttar collected 69.5 national points for his matching 85-point rides on High Voltage (Wilson Rodeo) and Run It Up (Eno Bucking Bulls/Gaume Farms).

The reserved Saskatchewan man climbed from No. 4 to No. 3 in the national standings, propelled within 580.5 points of No. 1 Tetz.

Should Buttar win the 2024 PBR Canada Championship he would not only tie Roy for most titles won by one rider with three, but he would become the first rider to win the honor in consecutive seasons.

In his PBR Canada debut, 2023 PRCA (Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association) Champion Ky Hamilton (Mackay, Queensland, Australia) parlayed an 85.5-point ride on Busta Rhymes (X6 Ranch Bucking Cattle/Legend Rodeo Stock) into a fourth-place finish.

Hamilton left Medicine Hat having earned 39 national points. He surged from unranked to No. 34 in Canada.

Rounding out the Top 5 was Ashton Sahli (Red Deer, Alberta).

Sahli covered Smog (Kinky Buckers) for 85 points in the opening round, earning 33.5 national points.

The Albertan gained one position in the national standings, rising from No. 8 to No. 7. He’s now 689 points back of No. 1 Tetz.

The 2024 PBR Canada Sup Series next travels to Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, and SaskTel Centre for the PBR Saskatoon Classic on Friday, October 25 and Saturday, October 26. Action will get underway nightly at 7 p.m. CST.
