By Covy Moore

CORONATION, Alta. – Two-time and reigning PBR (Professional Bull Riders) Canada Champion Dakota Buttar (Eatonia, Saskatchewan) was dominant Friday night in Coronation, Alberta, going a perfect 2-for-2 to win the Touring Pro Division’s Royal Rumbull.

Buttar got off to a fast start in Round 1, delivering the top score after he went the distance atop Uproar (Foley Bucking Bulls) for 86 points.

The reserved Saskatchewan man then cemented the victory in the championship round courtesy of his event-best 87-point score aboard Hanna Motors Broken Halo (Skori Bucking Bulls).

Garnering 39 national points, Buttar remained No. 13 in Canada, climbing within 676.5 points of No. 1 Cody Coverchuk (Meadow Lake, Saskatchewan).

Chasing history this November, should Buttar win the 2024 PBR Canada Championship, and accompanying $100,000 bonus, he would not only tie three-time title holder Aaron Roy (Yellow Grass, Saskatchewan) for most championships won by one rider, but Buttar would become the first to win the honor in back-to-back seasons,

Tanner Eno (Coronation, Alberta) and Lonnie West (Cadogan, Alberta) tied for second. Both riders collected 18 national points for the 84-point ride in Round 1.

Eno rode Fingers (Big Stone Rodeo Co.), while West dominated Nasty Cherry (Foley Bucking Bulls).

In the national standings, Eno rose from No. 29 to No. 28, while West climbed from unranked to No. 42.

Fourth was Ashton Shali (Red Derer, Alberta).

The Albertan rode Brimstone (Skori Bucking Bulls) for 83.5 points in the opening round, earning 13 national points.

Sahli rose one position in the race for the 2024 PBR Canada Championship, rising from No. 8 to No. 7. He is now within 618 points of No. 1 Coverchuk.

Rounding out the Top 5 in fifth was Stefan Tonita (Saskatoon, Saskatchewan).

Tonita collected 12 national points for his 83-point effort on Emerson (Big Stone Rodeo Co.) in Round 1.

Chasing his first PBR Canada Championship this November, Tonita climbed from No. 21 to No. 19 in the national standings.

In the bull pen, Moonwalk (Thompson Rodeo Livestock) bucked supreme, crowned the Bull of the Event. Bucking in the championship round, Moonwalk was marked an unrivaled 44 points for his 2.56-second buckoff of Tonita.

The 2024 PBR Canada season continues Saturday, August 10 with the Touring Pro Division’s Elnora Brahma Rama in Elnora, Alberta. Action at the Elnora Agriculture Grounds begins at 7:00 p.m. MT.
