Dustin Martinez wins Round 1 of Camping World PBR Last Cowboy Standing in Cheyenne

2024 world No. 2 John Crimber tied for second place in the first round at the Daddy of 'Em All.

By Mandi McCary

CHEYENNE, Wyo. – Dustin Martinez (Canjilon, New Mexico) brought the heat at the “Daddy of ‘Em All” as he won Monday night’s Round 1 of the Camping World PBR (Professional Bull Riders) Last Cowboy Standing at Cheyenne Frontier Days.

Martinez reached 8 seconds aboard War Daddy (TNT Bucking Bulls/ Hart Cattle Co) for 87 points. Making a push in the 2024 Challenger Standings, 27-year-old Martinez currently sits in the Top 15 at No. 12. A win in Cheyenne could advance him into the Top 10 as the season kicks into high gear.

The round win awarded the New Mexico cowboy 38 Challenger Global points.

Eleven cowboys out of a field of 50 recorded qualified rides in Round 1, guaranteeing the group of athletes among the best bull riders in the world a spot in Tuesday’s Round 2.

Twenty-five bull riders from Monday’s Round 1 will return to the “Daddy of ‘Em All” on Tuesday, July 23, for Round 2 of the Camping World PBR Last Cowboy Standing. With a minimum of 25 riders required to advance to Round 2, the remaining 14 draw spots will be determined by the Challenger Global standings as of July 22, heading into the event in Cheyenne.

The Top 8 riders in the aggregate following the second round will then advance to Round 3. Round 4 will then consist of the Top 4 riders in the aggregate based on the previous three rounds.

Round 5 will feature every rider who posted a qualified ride in Round 4. A minimum of two riders will compete in Round 5. If only one rider covers in Round 4, the PBR will draw back one rider based on aggregate scores following the completion of Round 4.

In a winner-take-all format, the rider with the highest score in Round 5 will win the title of Last Cowboy Standing.

While the event in Cheyenne is an individual competition, teams within the separate PBR Camping World Team Series had the opportunity to send three riders to compete over the two days in Wyoming. A separate bonus of $40,000 will go to the team if one of their athletes is crowned the champion. If the winning athlete is not on a team, the added prize money goes to that cowboy.

Not far behind Martinez in the hunt for a buckle in Cheyenne was Arizona Ridge Riders athlete Luciano De Castro (Guzolandia, Brazil) and Florida Freedom phenom John Crimber (Decatur, Texas) in a tie for second place.

Matched with Gas Money (Alex Orozco), Castro launched from the chutes in perfect form as the Wyoming crowd roared.

Crimber, having just finished his rookie season and become a first-round draft pick for the new Florida team, was paired with I’m a Hostage (Hart Cattle Company). Giving fans at Cheyenne Frontier Days a front-row seat to the determined talent that nearly landed him a world title earlier this year, Crimber sailed through the air.

Their matching 86.5-point ride scores earned the duo 25 Challenger Global points each and a ticket to Round 2.

Austin Gamblers man Ezekiel Mitchell (Rockdale, Texas) was paired with Fabio (D&H Cattle Company) early in Round 1. Mitchell, who was bucked off, instantly hit the challenge button. After a lengthy review, judges deemed the buckoff worthy of a re-ride due to a foul on the gate changing the bull’s direction.

Climbing aboard his second bull of the night, Joy’s Bang Bang (4B Bucking Bulls/ Rudy Mejia Bucking Bulls), Mitchell was again offered a re-ride by judges for a technical issue.

As announcers mentioned that the third time was destined to be a charm, Mitchell fired from the chutes aboard Spooky (Wigged Out Cattle Co.). The 85.5-point score landed him in fourth place and netted the Texas cowboy 20 Challenger Global points.

Rounding out the Top 5 on Monday night was Crimber’s Florida Freedom teammate Conner Halverson (Gordon, Nebraska). The Nebraska man prepared for his showdown with Icky Thump (Diamond C Cattle Co).

Halverson’s solid 85.25-point score earned 19 Challenger Global points and a guaranteed spot in the second round.

The Camping World PBR Last Cowboy Standing continues on Tuesday, July 23, at 7:45 p.m. MT.
