New PBR broadcast deals to give fans live events in regular Friday through Sunday windows

CBS Sports commits through 2030 while Dr. Phil’s Merit Street launches into live sports with PBR and women’s rodeo.

By Andrew Giangola

FORT WORTH, Texas – The days of fans having to ask that dreaded question, “Where and how do I watch PBR this weekend?” are coming to an end.

Say goodbye to hiding the phone to stay off social media to avoid spoilers for the PBR tape delay telecast.

Live PBR telecasts in regular, consistent broadcast windows (think the NFL on any given Sunday) are on the way, following today’s announcement of a landmark rights agreements with CBS Sports and Merit Street Media™.

The new broadcast landscape for PBR will bring fans the most LIVE bull riding television coverage and shoulder programming in the sport’s history, without all those spoilers.

Starting with the Teams season in July, every event day in the PBR Camping World Teams Series and PBR Unleash The Beast individual tour will now be broadcast LIVE in dedicated windows on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays. The windows are yet to be announced.

As a result of the deals, PBR will have more than 325 hours of total programming for the sport annually, and its network broadcasts will be available in more homes than ever before.

CBS Sports, PBR’s media partner since 2012, has extended its agreement through 2030 to carry PBR events on the CBS Television Network and Paramount+, increasing annual broadcast coverage to 25 hours a year by showcasing premier individual and Teams events.

Meantime, Dr. Phil rides the bull, and he’s coming in hot like Jose Vitor Leme on Woopaa.

“I can’t think of any better way for Merit Street to begin sports programming than with PBR,” said Dr. Phil McGraw, founder of Merit Street Media. “Coming from Texas, I know how important this sport is to the state and to see it grow across this country has been both exciting and deserving.”

McGraw is putting his airtime where his mouth is. Merit Street Television will carry more than 300 hours of total original PBR content annually.

Beginning in July, in its first partnership with a major professional sport, Merit Street will carry PBR Teams events; the full UTB schedule and 50 episodes of PBR Now, giving fans news, information and analysis.

Fans can also stream every MSM event live and for free as RidePass, PBR’s Western Sports and Lifestyle channel on Pluto TV, moves to Merit+.

The Merit Street agreement also includes greater exposure for women’s rodeo, carrying six two-hour WRWC (Women’s Rodeo World Championship) events, through the WRWC’s partnership with PBR.

“Making every ride, every round, and every event available live to fans is a game changer for PBR,” said Sean Gleason, CEO and Commissioner, PBR. “CBS Sports continues to give us the broadest reach possible for our most premium content, while Merit Street is making PBR the anchor of their sports coverage.”

“We are excited that CBS Sports will continue our decades long partnership with the PBR and showcase the sport for years to come,” said Dan Weinberg, Executive Vice President, Programming, CBS Sports. “PBR’s aptitude for growth and dynamic spirit have pushed them to new heights, and we look forward to delivering PBR to viewers across the country on CBS and Paramount+, with more broadcast hours than ever before.”

CBS’s 25-hour commitment to 25 hours on “The Tiffany Network” continues to make PBR one of the most prolific sports on network television – sharing rarified air with sports like the NFL, college football, college basketball, including the NCAA Division I Men's Basketball Championship; golf, including The Masters®, PGA Championship and PGA TOUR.

The year-round leader in cross-platform sports coverage continues to grow its PBR audience. In the first quarter of 2024, PBR on CBS generated an average of over 1 million viewers, a 15% year-over-year increase.

Meantime, Merit Street has executed one of the smartest launches in television history and anticipates being in more than 100 million homes by the end of the year.

EVP/COO Joel Cheatwood says the goal is to become “the preeminent news information entertainment network in America.”

One path there is going all-in on bull riding as the network’s first live sport.

When the network launched in April, Fanchon Stinger, co-anchor of “Morning on Merit Street,” immediately began covering PBR with a feature dispelling myths about the treatment of the bulls.

The day before the landmark PBR-Merit Street deal was announced, Stinger interviewed World No. 2 John Crimber and his dad, pioneering Brazilian rider Paulo Crimber, now coach of the Florida Freedom and holding the No. 1 pick in the upcoming 2024 New Rider Draft with John anticipated to go first.

Don’t be surprised to see MSM partners Steve Harvey and Nancy Grace dirtside at PBR events.

Or Dr. Phil doing a whole hour on PBR. America’s favorite therapist won’t physically get on a bull, but his network is gearing up to provide more coverage than fans have ever seen.

No PBR fan will ever need to hide their phone again.
