2024 PBR World Finals: Unleash The Beast field officially set following PWVT Finals

2024 PBR World Finals: Unleash The Beast field officially set following PWVT Finals

Breaking down the final five cowboys invited to Cowtown Coliseum May 9-12.

By James Youness

PUEBLO, Colo. – When all was said and done inside American Bank Center Arena Saturday night, a pair of respective champions were crowned.

With world No. 2 John Crimber posting a perfect 3-for-3 slate en route to capturing his first-ever Pendleton Whisky Velocity Tour (PWVT) event win (which, naturally, happened to be the PWVT Finals title itself), the 18-year-old phenom continued adding pages to his already impressive rookie chapter.

All things considered; we knew the standout talent would be amongst the favorites to win it all from the get-go. He has, after all, performed atop just about every stage in the industry despite this being his first year of professional completion.

While the big win netted him an extra chunk of change and plenty of momentum heading into next weekend’s upcoming 2024 PBR World Finals: Unleash The Beast, that very event will serve as Crimber’s “Final Boss” as the Decatur, Texas, all-star prepares his affairs for the endgame shootout.

Knowing the three-leg, postseason gauntlet is set to begin Thursday, May 9 inside Cowtown Coliseum with Eliminations, Crimber may have had his spot clinched for months, courtesy of his game-changing rookie season.

But with the final pieces of the 2024 PBR World Finals puzzle officially assembled (as the last five invites were granted Saturday night), we’re taking a look at the final five cowboys who punched their tickets to next week’s showdown!

And with a pair of World Finals qualifiers in Wingson Henrique da Silva and Ederson Santos officially ruled out of the season-culminating showcase, keep an eye on PBR.com and @PBR social media channels to see who will fill in the final pack spots via alternate rider consideration!

(HINT: They may have been in action in Corpus Christi as well!)

1. Grayson Cole (Pendleton Whisky Velocity Tour Champion) With 36-year-old rookie Ederson Santos bringing a banged-up knee into the competition, albeit leading Grayson Cole by 17.5 Velocity Global points, the talent knew he’d be competing against his own health, let alone 44 other skilled cowboys. Eventually ruled out of both the remainder of competition in Corpus Christi after visibly limping off the dirt with some help from the sports medicine team, it was later shared that the first-year Brazilian will also miss next weekend’s World Finals due to his lower-body injury.

That, of course, set the table for Cole to finish the weekend as the tour’s eventual champion. Needing just one conversion to get the job done, Cole matched his Round 2 opponent’s every move, as he teamed up with Pearl Snap to secure not only the round win, but the championship honors overall!

Primed to ride for the Missouri Thunder during this summer’s third season of PBR Camping World Team Series action, Cole was a combined 19-for-62 (30.65%) throughout all of his Velocity Global-eligible outs in 2024. Turning in a ninth-place finish overall in Corpus Christi, Cole netted 58 Velocity Global points to seal the deal, thus representing one of his 10 Top 10 finishes throughout the season. However, dating back to the New Ringgold, Pennsylvania, native’s 2020 season, he’s just 1-for-24 overall on Unleash The Beast. With his lone UTB conversion coming back in 2021, he’ll look to break out on the premier series beginning Thursday night during his second-ever trip to World Finals!

2. Dener Barbosa (Velocity Global standings) With the Top 3-ranked individuals (who haven’t already qualified) within the Velocity Global standings following Saturday night’s showdown receiving invites to Cowtown Coliseum, veteran rider Dener Barbosa earned himself a spot at Eliminations as the first of three in said category.

Marking his eighth overall World Finals qualification, the veteran, who was recently traded to the Arizona Ridge Riders of the PBR Teams league, still has plenty left in the tank. Ever-evident by not only qualifying for the season-ending showdown, but doing it with conviction, as he ended the PWVT season ranked third overall in the Velocity Global standings.

One of 19 different riders to make the 8 inside American Bank Center Arena, his 16th-place showing doesn’t pop off the page by any means. But the fact that he’s healthy and will be smiling for fans at Eliminations means we could hear the “Dener Bell” ring once again on UTB after seeing the veteran go 3-for-17 within premier series competition in 2024.

3. Jean Fernandes Pereira (Velocity Global standings) Speaking of capable, Brazilian talents, 28-year-old Jean Fernandes Pereira is next up on the list of this season’s last-second qualifiers. Unable to make any noise in Corpus Christi, going 0-for-2 during his final PWVT appearance of the year, Pereira was able to lean on the work he put in throughout the season in securing his spot at World Finals.

Ending the regular season ranked No. 5 overall with a 22-for-55 (40%) slate throughout all Velocity Global-eligible attempts, he was a mere 7-for-29 in PWVT events themselves. However, a regular star at the weekly PBR Stockyards Showcase events hosted in the same iconic venue the first two stages of this year’s 2024 PBR World Finals: Unleash The Beast will be played out, it was his Touring Pro Division-leading 15-for-26 which ultimately gave the rider a bump in his overall Velocity Global standings.

It’s not about HOW you make it to the big dance. It’s about what you DO once you’re on the dance floor! But with the Brazilian very comfortable inside Cowtown Coliseum at this point, we’d suggest keeping an eye on the talent next weekend, despite attempting just two bulls throughout his UTB career.

4. Claudio Montana Jr. (Velocity Global standings) One of just eight riders who were able to produce at least two conversions inside American Bank Center Arena, 35-year-old Claudio Montanha Jr. received the final of three tour standings-based invites, eventually ending the season ranked No. 11.

Using his sixth-place effort at the PWVT Finals to fuel himself up the season leaderboard, he earned a crucial 81 Velocity Global points Saturday night for his work dancing with Plowboy (Round 2: 86.25 points) and later King Cornelius (Round 3: 84.75 points). However, with zero attempts on UTB this season, combined with his 0-for-13 record from the 2023 slate, the veteran will need to turn the clock back if he hopes to advance to AT&T Stadium May 18-19.

That said, his 17-for-46 Velocity Global-eligible record shows that he’s been more than capable of making the 8 in 2024. Between a series of close calls at respective PBR Stockyards Showcase events and his four Top 6 finishes at differing PWVT showdowns, he hasn’t found the winner’s circle since last February. Which sounds like he’s very much due to pick up a big win as his career continues, courtesy of his seventh World Finals qualification.

5. Qynn Andersen (Top-Performing International Invite) Last but certainly not least, Australian rider Qynn Andersen secured a career-first berth to World Finals courtesy of being the top-performing rider amongst the PWVT Finals’ three international invites (who haven’t already earned a spot). Joining Nick Tetz (Canada) and Jean Fernandes Pereira (Brazil) as this year’s selections, the 20-year-old

Spending last summer with the Missouri Thunder, the Australian has some experience competing against the top dogs in the game. But with Thursday night’s out inside Cowtown Coliseum set to serve as the youngster’s first UTB out, it would be fair to say that’s one hell of a way to debut on the premier series.

Posting a quality 85-point score in Saturday’s second round, the journey aboard Redline wasn’t enough to secure him a spot in the short go, but technically will still provide Andersen some late-season momentum before he attempts to shock the world next week. Exiting the event with a 1-for-2, 12th-place finish, he concludes his season ranked No. 26 in the Velocity Global standings despite producing just an 8-for-37 slate.

That’s all in the past now, though, as the international talent joins several of his competitors from Corpus Christi in representing the world’s best bull riders May 9-19 in Fort Worth and Arlington, Texas!
