SIOUX FALLS, S.D. – It was a long time coming for 27-year-old veteran rider Wyatt Rogers (Hulbert, Oklahoma), but on Saturday night the Oklahoma cowboy finally captured his first round win at the PBR (Professional Bull Riders) Unleash The Beast (UTB) First Premier Bank PBR Sioux Falls before a rowdy, sold-out Denny Sanford Premier Center crowd.
After being bucked off of Norse God (Jane Clark/ Gene Owen) in 2.03 seconds on Friday night in Round 1, Rogers was paired with Chemist (Bob & Jeri Adams/ D&H Cattle Co) on night two in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. After the robust animal wasn’t feeling the chemistry and acted wholly uncooperative in the chutes, Rogers was awarded a re-ride by judges.
Rocketing from the chutes aboard Watch Out (Nothin’ But Try Ranch/ Diggers/ 4 Diamonds) as the packed arena cheered, Rogers knocked down a round-winning, 88.25-point ride, becoming one of only six men out of a field of 38 to record a qualified ride in Round 2.
“It’s just on God’s timing. I’ve been through adversity this year with some injuries and such and just kept going,” said Rogers. “Sioux Falls, this crowd, I love it. I had a Top 5 finish here last year and I am just going to keep going.”
The three-day event at the Denny Sanford Premier Center marks the ninth time the elite tour has visited Sioux Falls and the nineteenth Unleash The Beast event of the 2024 season. With just four events remaining before the 2024 PBR World Finals in Fort Worth, Texas, beginning on May 9, the hunt for world points is more intense than ever.
With the round win, the Oklahoma cowboy earned 28 Unleash The Beast points and climbed from No. 44 to No. 41 in the standings as Saturday rolled to a close.
After a less-than-ideal Friday night when bucked off by Nefarious (Viducic Bucking Bulls/ Jess Lockwood) in 3.48 seconds, Kaique Pacheco (Itatiba, Brazil) was runner up to Rogers, scoring 88 points on his re-ride bull Cookies & Cream (Burch Pro Rodeo/ Nixon Bucking Bulls).
For his runner-up finish in the round, the 29-year-old Brazilian earned 18 Unleash The Beast points. More importantly, Pacheco secured the No. 2 spot on the weekend leaderboard – a mere .25 points behind event leader Rogers heading into Championship Sunday.
Pacheco moved from No. 11 to No. 10 in the Unleash The Beast standings.
Seven-time PRCA World Champion Sage Kimzey (Strong City, Oklahoma) clinched third place on Saturday night courtesy of an 87.75-point score.
Kimzey [AG1] showcased his signature form and never-give-up approach aboard Blue Suede Shoes (Lucas Manning Bucking Bulls) and collected 17 Unleash The Beast points to cruise slightly upward from No. 34 to No. 32.
Mauricio Moreira (Gaviao Peixoto, Brazil), also shut out in the opening round, finished Saturday in fourth place to move from No. 27 to No. 26 in the standings.
Despite being thrashed to the ground Friday night in 1.38 seconds, Moreira came back strong Saturday aboard Ninja Cowboy (Universal Pro Rodeo/ Rachel & Dustin Powell/ Delmas/ Williams) for 85.75 points.
World leader Cassio Dias (Sao f de Sales, Brazil) rounded out the Top 5 of Round 2 to maintain his hold on the world standings.
After going 2-for-3 in Nampa last week he struggled on Friday night to convert aboard Miller Time (A&E Bucking Bulls/ BS Cattle Co).
Paired with Medicine Red (Win Rock/ D&H Cattle Co/ OK Corralis/ Gordon) on Saturday night, a bull he has never matched up with previously, Dias showcased his immense talent as the incredibly agile animal athlete leapt from the chutes. His 84.5-point score put him in tenth place on the weekend leaderboard heading into Championship Sunday.
Dias earned 15 Unleash The Beast points for his fifth-place finish.
The First Premier Bank PBR Sioux Falls, presented by Cooper Tires, continues with Round 3 followed by the championship round, set to begin on Sunday, April 7, at 2:45 p.m. CT.
