Alvaro Ariel wins Beatbox PBR Oakland Pendleton Whisky Velocity Tour event

Ariel earned 108 points and now sits at No. 23 in the Velocity Global standings.

By Mandi McCary

OAKLAND, Calif. – As the PBR (Professional Bull Riders) Pendleton Whisky Velocity Tour’s (PWVT) Beatbox PBR Oakland rolled to a close on Saturday night, 30-year-old Alvaro Ariel (Itumirim, Brazil) collected his first event win of the 2024 season.

Ariel first landed on the leaderboard in Round 1 earlier in the one-night event with a first-place finish after making the whistle aboard Puckered Up (Berger/Scott Cattle) for 87.5 points.

Going into the championship round with high hopes, the Brazilian rider was paired with Hell Storm (Julio Moreno/Bar CB). Falling short of his goal to be the only man to go 2-for-2 in Oakland, Ariel was bucked off at 3.65 seconds.

Despite the less-than-ideal final round, his efforts at the night began clinched the win. Ariel leaves Oakland with 108 Velocity Global points and now sits at No. 23 in the standings.

A pair of cowboys were not far behind Ariel in his efforts.

Arizona’s Jaxton Mortensen (Coolidge, Arizona) and Brazil’s Douglas Lino de Souza (Morro Agudo, Brazil) tied for the second-place finish courtesy of matching 85-point scores in Round 1.

As the night began, Mortensen confidently soared through the air aboard Boss Hog (Hawkins Bucking Bulls/ Carol/ B Bar Ranch), while Souza bested Maximus (Dakota Rodeo/ Chad Berger).

As the incredible animal athletes of the PBR dominated the championship round, Mortensen and Souza fell short in their matchups with July (Leffew Bucking Bulls) and Dr. Campbell (Nancy Haverty/ Clay Struve/ Dakota Rodeo/ Chad Berger), respectively.

Both cowboys earned 60.5 Velocity Global Points for their efforts, leaving them tied for the No. 59 spot in the Velocity standings.

24-year-old Grayson Cole (New Ringgold, Pennsylvania) gritted it out to finish in fourth place in Oakland.

Cole exploded from the chutes in Round 1 aboard Bert (Julio Moreno Bucking Bulls/ Vince Diaz) for a satisfactory 84.5 points - enough to punch his ticket into the final round.

The Pennsylvania cowboy was paired with Oilfield Outlaw’s Yellow Feather (Chad Berger/Oilfield Outlaw’s Bucking Bulls) as the night ended. Despite Cole’s best efforts, he was no match for the powerful bovine, being flung to the ground after a mere 5.56 seconds.

Despite his misfortune as the night ended in California, Cole heads home with 37 Velocity Global points and sits at No. 3 in the Velocity standings.

Dawson Branton (Jefferson, Oregon), Wyatt Rogers (Hulbert, Oklahoma) and Elijah Monnett (Glendale, Utah) rounded out the Top 5 in a three-way tie courtesy of identical 82-point scores in Round 1.

Up first in the trio, Rogers squared off against The Judge (Clay Struve/ Dakota Rodeo/ Chad Berger) for his successful opening-round ride. Branton then followed suit aboard Happy Hour (Hawkins Bucking Bulls). The final man in the Round 1 trifecta was Monnett in his matchup with Whatever (Dakota Rodeo/ Chad Berger/Ken Barnhart).

While Branton didn’t compete in the championship round, Rogers and Monnett both came down hard in just under three seconds.

For their shared fifth-place finish, all three cowboys earned 25.7 points. Branton now holds the No. 2 position in the Velocity standings, while Rogers sits at No. 36, and Monnett is still climbing the ranks.

The talented bull riders of the Pendleton Whisky Velocity Tour will next head to Fresno, California, April 5-6, for the Walmart Health & Wellness PBR Fresno at the Save Mart Center.
