HAMPTON, Va. – In a night dominated by some of the rankest animal athletes in the world, Dener Barbosa (Paulo de Faria, Brazil) broke through in the final out to win Round 1 of the Pendleton Whisky Velocity Tour’s GovX PBR (Professional Bull Riders) Hampton.
After failing to get out of the chute on Rip Tide (Davis Rodeo Ranch), Barbosa was rematched with The Undertaker (Cornwell/Riley/PCP Bucking Bulls) to end the first night. The Brazilian thundered out of the chutes to a roaring Hampton Coliseum crowd and made the 8 for 86 points to bring the evening to a climactic close.
Barbosa’s first-round victory netted him 28 Velocity Global points.
Seth White (Statesville, North Carolina) finished second.
The North Carolinian roared out of the gate on Modified Hou (Cowtown Rodeo) for a solid 83 points.
He left the arena with 18 Velocity Global points.
The final qualified ride of the evening belonged to Kyle Eaton (Chico, California), who finished third.
The California cowboy was able to make the 8 for just 70 points on Fireball (Cornwell Bucking Bulls).
Eaton looks to catapult up the leaderboard tomorrow after earning nine Velocity Global points in Round 1.
Leading the dominant bull pen was Retro Maniac (Lucas Manning Bucking Bulls), marked 43.5 points for his 4.41-second buck off of Brylee Smith (Laurelville, Ohio).
Four other animal athletes tied for the second-highest marked out at 43 points in Round 1.
The first bull to earn 43 was Frosty (Lucas Manning Bucking Bulls), who dismounted Kyler Oliver (Roy, Utah) in a quick 1.99 seconds to end the first frame.
Not to be outdone, Kingdom (Cowtown Rodeo) thundered out of the chutes and threw Brandon Chambers (Newport, North Carolina) to the dirt in just 1.85 seconds.
Hoobastank (Lucas Manning Bucking Bulls) joined his fellow bovines by unseating Cameron Delano (Liberty, South Carolina) in 2.06 seconds.
In Section 3, Cole Trivette (Statesville, North Carolina) was bucked off in 5.05 seconds by Eyes On Me (Lucas Manning Bucking Bulls), who joined the 43-point club.
Velocity Global points contribute to the Velocity Global Standings and determine which new riders are added to the elite Unleash The Beast throughout the season. The Top 3 Velocity Global riders who have not already qualified are also invited to the PBR World Finals in May.
The Pendleton Whisky Velocity Tour action in Hampton concludes tomorrow, Saturday, February 23, with Round 2 and the championship round beginning at 7 p.m. EST.
