By Andrew Hatfield

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. –  The only rider to go a perfect 3-for-3, Cody McCandless (Derry, Pennsylvania) won the Pendleton Whisky Velocity Tour’s (PWVT) Tractor Supply Co. PBR (Professional Bull Riders) Grand Rapids.

The Pennsylvania cowboy entered Saturday in eighth after riding Little Hornet (Mike Miller Bucking Bulls) for 78.5 points in Round 1.

Knowing he needed to put together a strong championship Saturday for a chance at his first PBR event buckle, McCandless sat tall atop Rip VanWinkle (J Bar W) for 82.5 points to punch his ticket to the championship round.

In front of a roaring Van Andel Arena crowd, the 21-year-old rocketed out of the gate on Muss Buss (C-B Bucking Bulls) for 85.5 points to overtake the lead.

After the dust settled in Grand Rapids, McCandless netted a crucial 116 Velocity Global points, pushing him to the No. 3 spot in the Velocity Tour standings.

Qynn Andersen (Koumala, Queensland, Australia) held onto the second-place spot in the event standings after his strong Round 1 performance.

Paired with Cash Goblin (Dave Martin/Mike Miller Bucking Bulls), the Australian cowboy posted the second-best ride in Round 1 with 85.5 points.

After being bucked off Blaze (J Bar W) in 7.13 seconds in the penultimate round, Andersen rebounded and won the championship round with an event-high 87.5 points on The Undertaker (Cornwell/Riley/PCP Bucking Bulls).

The Aussie garnered 96 Velocity Global points, breaking him into the Top 10 in the Velocity Tour standings.

Round 1 winner Marco Rizzo (Quitman, Georgia) finished third.

Rizzo won Round 1 by topping Air Shift (Mike Miller Bucking Bulls) for 87 points on Friday and maintained the top spot in the event standings after riding Money Maker (C Check Bucking Bulls) for 84 points in Round 2.

Bucking last in the final round, Rizzo attempted to win his second consecutive event but was bucked off by Shazam (Dave Martin/Mike Miller Bucking Bulls) in 1.84 seconds.

The bronze finish earned the Georgia cowboy 80.5 points, maintaining his hold on the No. 1 ranking in the early Velocity Tour standings.

In fourth was Rubens Barbosa (Iaciara, Brazil), who went 2-for-3.

The Brazilian stormed out of the chutes for 83.5 points on Kiss This (J Bar W) in Round 1, putting him in fifth entering Saturday.

Barbosa covered Sierra’s Dance (J Bar W) for 84.5 points in Round 2 but was unable to convert in the championship round, bucking off Cutthroat (Cornwell Bucking Bulls) in 1.42 seconds to end his bid for the event buckle.

The veteran’s first Top 5 finish of 2024 secured Barbosa 54 Velocity Global points.

Grayson Cole (New Ringgold, Pennsylvania) rounded out the Top 5.

On Friday night, Cole topped Recall (J Bar W) for 84.5 points.

The Pennsylvania cowboy’s success carried over to Round 2, as he roared out of the chutes on Monkey Doo (C-B Bucking Bulls) for 83 points.

A member of the Florida Freedom in the PBR Camping World Team Series, Cole shot out of the gate on Bad Hart (Mike Miller Bucking Bulls) in the championship round but was bucked off after a thrilling 7.21 seconds.

Cole left Van Andel Arena with 48 Velocity Global points.

The last rider to put together two riders was Tyler Manor (Portland, Indiana), who finished sixth.

After covering Smooth Kat (Cornwell Bucking Bulls) for 83 points in the opening round, he bucked off Panic Button (C-B Bucking Bulls) in 3.92 seconds in Round 2.

Undeterred, the Indianan bounced back, topping Funny Farm (Cornwell Bucking Bulls/PCP Bucking Bulls) for 81 points in the championship round.

The Top-10 finish earned Manor 43 Velocity Global points.

In the bull pen, The Undertaker and Muss Buss split the Bull of the Event title. The Undertaker was marked 43 points for his championship round out with Andersen. Muss Buss matched him in Round 1, bucking off Alex Jenks (Vale, North Carolina) in 4.15 seconds.

While the elite Unleash The Beast bucks in Tulsa, Oklahoma, this weekend, the Pendleton Whisky Velocity Tour action continues in Reno, Nevada.
