DENVER – As three nights of nonstop action at the PBR (Professional Bull Riders) Pendleton Whisky Velocity Tour’s (PWVT) Denver PBR Chute Out at the National Western Stock Show concluded on Wednesday night, Cort McFadden (Novice, Texas) captured a career-first PWVT win.
The rare midweek event in Denver showcased a unique format for fans. The initial draw featured 90 riders competing in Round 1, which split riders into two groups across the first two nights of competition.
On Monday night, 45 riders each attempted one bull. Round 1 then concluded on Tuesday with the remaining 45 riders who did not compete Monday, attempting one bull each.
For Monday’s opening round, McFadden teamed up with Too Dirty (Ty Rinaldo TZ Bucking Bulls) for a solid 86.5 points. The score put him in fourth place headed into the final night in Denver.
As Round 2 began on Wednesday night, the Top 30 riders from Round 1 readied themselves to each face another bull in hopes of punching their ticket to the championship round. The 15 bull riders with the top combined ride scores following the first two rounds then advanced to the final championship round.
In Round 2, McFadden was paired with Crazy Times (Hart Cattle Co/ Randy Wood), firing out of the chutes for an impressive 87.5 points to tie for first place in Round 2.
As the very last rider in the championship round on Wednesday night, the 19-year-old Texan was paired with Coca Cola Cowboy (Wacey Hart/ Plummer). Hitting the ground hard as the muscular animal athlete launched him at 3.59 seconds – McFadden still clinched the event victory.
For his 2-for-3 week, McFadden leaves Colorado with a check for $20,984.97 and 119 Velocity Global points, moving him to No. 3 in the standings.
Hunter Ball (Carsonville, Michigan) and Paulo Eduardo Rossetto (Colorado, Brazil), who were both double entered in the event, tied for second place in Denver after each going 2-for-3.
Round 1 was successful for both cowboys, with Ball conquering Taking Chances (Frihauf Cattle Co) for 86 points and Rossetto besting Rooster Jack (Classic Jack Cattle/ Viducic Bucking Bulls) for 85.5.
Round 2 saw the Michigan cowboy continue his momentum when paired with Family Tradition (Frihauf Cattle Co). Securing an 84.5-point score above the monstrous bovine, he sailed into the championship round but was unsuccessful in his matchup with Renegade (Hale/ Vella/Ogden/Hart).
Wednesday’s opening round did not go as well for Rossetto as Swoop (Classic Jack Cattle/ Viducic Bucking Bulls) dispatched him after 5.34 seconds. Where he lacked in Round 2, there was no stopping the 26-year-old Brazilian in the final round. His 85-point ride aboard Unstoppable (Guy Bucking Bulls) secured his second-place finish.
Ball departs Colorado with 72 Velocity Global points to sit at No. 6 in the standings while Rossetto collected 84 and moves to No. 2.
Brazilian cowboy Eric Henrique Domingos (Perola, Brazil) secured a fourth-place finish overall after a setback early Wednesday night.
Despite a commanding ride aboard Joy’s Bang Bang (4B Bucking Bulls/ Rudy Mejia Bucking Bulls) in Round 1 for 87 points, the 24-year-old hit the ground early after a mere 3.28 seconds in his matchup with Game Over (Cooper/ Scruggs/ Bishop) during Round 2.
Headed into the championship round, Domingos knew he had to gain ground. Firing out of the chutes aboard Dream Walkin’ (Conaway/ Ogden/ Hart Cattle Co) he notched an 82-point score.
His qualified ride in Round 1, combined with his championship round efforts, earned him 56 Velocity Global points and the No. 7 spot in the standings.
Rounding out the Top 5 at the Denver Coliseum was Canadian rider Chad Hartman (Lancer, Saskatchewan, Canada).
After sailing through Round 1 earlier in the week aboard Rowdy (Ogden Ranch/ Hart Cattle Co) for 83.5 points, Hartman was paired with Show-Off (Ty Rinaldo TZ Bucking Bulls) in Round 2. Launching from the chutes and remaining in complete control, the 24-year-old turned in an 85-point ride.
The championship round saw a matchup of Hartman and Nefarious (Viducic Bucking Bulls/ Jess Lockwood) that ended his week abruptly after just 3.4 seconds.
Hartman returns home at No. 13 in the standings after collecting 43.5 Velocity Global points for his 2-for-3 week.
The talented bull riders of the PWVT will next head to Charleston, West Virginia, for the PBR Charleston Brought To You By Oglebay Resort at the Charleston Civic Center Jan. 12-13. Additionally, in a double-up weekend, the PWVT will also be in Spokane, Washington, for the PBR Spokane on Jan.13 at the Spokane Arena.
