12.10.23 - Unleash The Beast

World No. 1 Cassio Dias goes back-to-back via second event win of the season in Johnstown

Cody Jesus finishes second, moves to No. 2 in UTB standings.

By Andrew Hatfield

Johnstown, PA. – The third PBR (Professional Bull Riders) Unleash The Beast event of the 2024 season came to a climactic end in Johnstown, Pennsylvania, Sunday afternoon, as Cassio Dias (Sao F. de Sales) went a perfect 2-for-2 on Championship Sunday to win his second event of the 2024 season.

Dias, a 22-year-old rising superstar for the Kansas City Outlaws in the separate PBR Teams league, got off to a strong start on Friday, topping The Judge (Blake Sharp) for 89.25 points on the first night of the three-day event.

Proving his resilience, the Brazilian cowboy battled back after bucking off Train Station (Cornwell Bucking Bulls) in 4.07 seconds Saturday night, riding Strong Arm (Gene Owen Bucking Bulls/Halpain) for 86.25 points on Sunday afternoon to punch his ticket to the championship round.

Choosing Cy Young (Blake Sharp/Robbie Ray/Doug Wilson), Dias wrapped his hand in the bull rope one more time, needing a solid score to rise to the top of the leaderboard.

Looking for his second-straight victory after winning in St. Louis, Missouri, last weekend, Dias stormed out of the chutes, moving in perfect time with his animal athlete opponent in front of a roaring, sold-out 1ST SUMMIT ARENA crowd, scoring an event-high 91.75 points to seize the event lead.

Through the victory, Dias earned 158.5 Unleash The Beast points and pushed his lead in the World Standings to 161.5 points in his quest for his first gold buckle.

Cody Jesus (Window Rock, Arizona) also went 3-for-4, finishing second, 3.25 points behind Dias.

After not competing in St. Louis last weekend, Jesus continued his perfect start to the 2024 Unleash The Beast season, winning Round 1 courtesy of a 90.75-point ride on Watch Out (Nothin But Try Ranch/Diggers/4 Diamonds).

Remaining perfect after riding Black As Coal (K Bar C Bucking Bulls/Bull Creek Bucking Bulls) for 86.25 points in Round 2 and Twisted Feather (Blake Sharp/Michael Floyd/Cain Kobert) for 87 points in Round 3, Jesus entered the final round with the event lead.

The Arizonan, a member of the 2024 PBR Teams Champion Texas Rattlers, had the first pick in the championship draft, but was unable to get out of the gate and was assigned to Red Scorpion (Lari Crane/Gene Owen) for a re-ride and his final animal athlete opponent.

The pair roared out of the chutes, but the powerful bovine competitor got the better of Jesus, who appeared to nearly make the 8 but was marked for a slap at 2.25 seconds.

The silver finish netted Jesus 125.5 UTB points and rocketed him to No. 2 in the standings.

Finishing third was Austin Richardson (Dallas, Texas).

In search of his third career UTB event win, Richardson was right on Jesus’s spurs through the first three rounds, matching his 3-for-3 start. The Texan began his weekend by making the 8 aboard Casper (Crescent Bucking Bulls/Lari Crane/Gene Owen) for 88.25 points.

In Round 2, he secured his first round win of the season by riding Matthew (C-B Bucking Bulls) for a solid 88 points, moving him into second in the event.

Richardson began Championship Sunday by covering Bad Hart (Mike Miller Bucking Bulls) for 86.75 points but was bucked off by Ivy League (Jane Clark/Gene Owen) in 1.12 seconds, ending his weekend third.

His place on the podium garnered Richardson 101.5 points in UTB standings, catapulting him up to No. 6 in the standings.

Koltin Hevalow (Smithville, Missouri) roared back from a Round 1 buckoff to post a 3-for-4 performance and finish fourth.

The Missourian got on the board in Round 2 by riding Sandman (Cornwell Bucking Bulls/Waggoner Bucking Bulls) for 85.5 points.

Paired with Tijuana Two-Step (Blake Sharp/Michael Floyd), Dias’s teammate on the Kansas City Outlaws sat tall aboard the powerful animal athlete for 88 points to secure a spot in the championship round.

Now on fire, Hevalow rocketed out of the gate on Whiskey Trip (Lari Crane/Gene Owen) and shot up the leaderboard courtesy of his 89-point out.

The young cowboy garnered 86.5 UTB points for his efforts in Johnstown, rising to No. 10 in the Unleash The Beast standings.

Rounding out the Top 5 was Vitor Losnake (Bauru, Brazil), who also went 3-for-4.

The 19-year-old cowboy rallied after bucking off Magic Carpet (K Bar C Bucking Bulls/Rafter C4) in 3.85 seconds in the opening round to cover Little Hornet (Mike Miller Bucking Bulls) for 82.5 points in Round 2.

Heating up, Losnake, who rides for the Arizona Ridge Riders in PBR Teams, topped Sonny B (Jane Clark/Gene Owen) for 83.75 points to secure his spot in the championship round.

Paired with Bandito Bug (Chris Utz/Carey Brothers/Mike Chaney/Blake Sharp), the Brazilian thundered out of the chutes, making the 8 for a third-straight time and scoring 83.5 points.

Thanks to his fifth-place finish, Losnake left Johnstown with 61 UTB points and moved to No. 13 in the standings.

For the second consecutive weekend, Man Hater (Jane Clark/Gene Owen) was the YETI “Built for the Wild” Bull of the Event. Matched with Eli Vastbinder (Statesville, North Carolina) in the championship round, the powerful bovine competitor made short work of the cowboy, bucking him off in 4.99 seconds en route to earning an event-high 45.75 points. Man Hater is now 27-0 in the PBR premier series.

After making a pit stop in Las Vegas, Nevada, on Wednesday, December 13, for Kid Rock’s Rock N’ Rodeo Party, the PBR’s Unleash The Beast's next tour stop is at SNHU Arena in Manchester, New Hampshire, on Friday, December 15 at 7:45 p.m. EST and Saturday, December 16, at 6:45 p.m. EST.
