ST. LOUIS, Mo. – Since riding his way into the United States last year, Cassio Dias has been checking a lot of his bucket list.
From finishing in second place of the 2023 PBR Teams MVP race (just 87 points behind two-time World Champion Jose Vitor Leme) to leading his Kansas City Outlaws with a team-best 20-for-28 record to becoming the only rider to start the 2024 premier series a perfect 6-for-6 (the list goes on …).
And yet Sunday’s win inside Enterprise is somehow the rookie’s first-ever premier series win.
Which makes sense when we account for the fact that he’s only participated in four ever, including this season’s events in Tucson, Arizona, and St. Louis, Missouri.
But after seeing the talented 22-year-old best his bovines time and time again, typically followed by some waves to the crowd and a spirited dance atop the shark cage, it seems like the Brazilian has been entertaining fans, tour personnel and even fellow riders for quite some time now.
“It’s hard to believe but it’s a dream come true for me,” Dias shared.
“This shows how much my hard work and everything that I put in, day by day, has paid off here with the best in the world.”
Coming into this weekend’s PBR St. Louis, hosted just 250 miles from his 5-on-5 squad’s home base in Kansas City, Dias was a perfect 3-for-3, albeit including a 69.5-point strike atop Coach K.
While the low score helped him secure a sixth-place finish in the tour’s inaugural event, it’s not what we’ve come to expect.
Fans who know Dias understand when he rides, it’s usually for big scores.
Getting back on track, the tour’s now No. 1-ranked rider ensured only the grandest of displays this time around.
Beginning his run by posting the second-best score in Round 1, he logged a quality 87.5-point score after dancing with Buzz to the requisite 8 seconds. Confirming what we’ve all known, and what some of his competitors feared: This cowboy is here to ride.
And he’s very good at doing so.
Continuing his historic start to the season as Championship Sunday dawned, it was just another event for Dias as he entered the arena, cheerful, yet determined, as ever.
Just a few hours later, however, his Unleash The Beast resume would be forever changed.
Partially thanks to another thrilling attempt in the second round.
This time paired against the likes of Hunted Down, he punched his ticket to the short go courtesy of his 86.25-point conversion. Feeding off the crowd’s energy, he quickly celebrated and regrouped, knowing his evening wasn’t yet over.
Later selecting Mike’s Motive in the bull draft with the second overall selection, whom he teamed up with earlier this year to capture the Stampede Days event title for his Kansas City Outlaws, courtesy of a rank 91.25-point conversion, Dias intended to seal the deal.
And that’s exactly what he did.
Extending his ride streak and flawless start to his rookie UTB season, while also representing the youngster’s first 90-point ride in the individual series, Dias presented the fans inside Enterprise Center with an evening they won’t soon forget.
Center stage and within the limelight (this time to accept his first event buckle), his smile was nearly contagious. He understood the importance of not only the win, but of what it represents.
For him. For his family.
Hell, for his budding bull riding career.
“(Credit goes) To God and all of the people who believe in me and have been with me on this journey. J.W. Hart, Guilherme Marchi and my wife,” Dias shared, via the translation help of Paulo Crimber.
“I always knew it and thought about it but I didn’t expect it all to happen this quickly. It’s just unbelievable, but I want to continue to put in the hard work, take it bull by bull and week by week.”
The talented rider may not have been part of the premier series for very long so far, but early showings predict he may be competing against the best in the world for quite some time.
Set to bring a 60.5-point lead over No. 2 Caden Bunch
into next weekend’s PBR Johnstown in Johnstown, Pennsylvania, technically the rest of the pack is competing with him.
The best bull rider on tour.
But again, not much of a surprise for anybody who’s been keeping tabs on the prized cowboy.
