Ten takeaways from 2023 PBR Camping World Teams Championship

Arguably one of the sport's best events, the 2023 PBR Camping World Teams Championship is officially in the books!

By James Youness

LAS VEGAS – Fans who made their way out to T-Mobile Arena this past weekend were treated to three days of some of the most competitive and entertaining games of bull riding action that’s ever been witnessed.

As several ride, game and postseason event scores were shattered as the world’s best bull riders continued to transform the innovative new format into the sporting world’s next spectacle, it’s been a pleasure to sit back and take it all in.

With the Texas Rattlers becoming the 2023 PBR Teams Champions Sunday afternoon, the second year of 5-on-5 action is officially in the books.

PBR Camping World Team Series fans should keep an eye on PBR.com and PBR social media channels in the coming weeks as the league prepares to announce some updates for the 2024 season.

From rank 92.5-point strikes to the No. 8 seed Missouri Thunder eliminating four squads en route to qualifying for a spot to compete on Championship Sunday, it’s safe to say the revolutionary PBR Camping World Team Series has struck gold.

Taking a brief glance at the postseason action, PBR.com is sharing some of the top takeaways from the 2023 PBR Camping World Teams Championship (In no particular order).

  • The

    Austin Gamblers

are, and likely will remain, a top-tier threat as long as

    Jose Vitor Leme

is around. Setting the PBR Teams regular season record for the most regular season wins (19), they’ll be an annual postseason contender. Had

    Dalton Kasel

been healthy, they may have been in the winner’s circle themselves.

  • That was arguably PBR’s most electric event in 30 years. We don’t even have to say much about this one. Especially if you were there to witness it in person (Hint: You’ll want to be here again next year for even MORE excitement).

  • Between the back-and-forth battles and nail-biting walk-offs, the team-based concept has us asking just one simple question: Why didn’t we think of this sooner?

  • Age is just a number. Youngsters were pitching in, veterans contined to be reliable, just ride your bulls and have fun was the vibe.

  • JRV solidified his place in PBR history, adding a Teams Championship and Teams Championship MVP to his already stacked resume.

  • Leading us to another … Texas is stacked and will very much be among the top considerations for favorites in the 2024 season. The Bra(i)dy Bunch was alive and well this weekend. If Cody Jesus can get, and stay healthy throughout the individual season, the Rattlers could be primed for another lengthy run in 2024.

  • Ten weeks isn’t enough … seeing talented teams like the

    Carolina Cowboys

go home on night one, one of the league’s most talented teams, reminds us how quick the season goes by. Will guys like

    Josh Frost

    and

    Sage Steele Kimzey

compete in PBR’s individual seasons this winter? Only time will tell. If not, fans will have to wait until next July to see the No. 1 and No. 2 picks back in action. With Frost winning the 2023 Pendleton Whisky Velocity Tour honors, we’d guess he'll be around come Tucson, but you never know about either of the talented veterans, who also enjoy some rodeo from time to time.

  • Trades played quite the roll in a few of the events’ highlights, with the

    Kansas City Outlaws

    Wingson Henrique da Silva

(acquired from the Carolina Cowboys) recording the highest-marked score of the weekend and Eli Vastbinder helping this year’s champions win it all. On the opposite end of the spectrum, Carolina, who selected Josh Frost with the pick it received from Kansas City, suffered an early exit. Also spending up to acquire the No. 1 overall selection in the 2023 PBR Teams Draft, eventually selecting Sage Steele Kimzey, the Cowboys will have to wait until 2024 to see if their investments were worthy. Oh yeah, and then there’s that JRV guy, who was part of a draft day-trade dating back to the inaugural 2022 PBR Teams Draft. That guy ended up being event MVP for Texas Sunday, confirming it was very much the right move.

  • Without disrespecting the regular season (because there’s plenty of money, bragging rights and beyond to be earned), team seeding doesn’t mean as much as it may seem. While the No. 1 Austin Gamblers indeed beat the No. 8 Missouri Thunder twice in tournament play, there were several “upsets” throughout the three-day gauntlet, all the way through the Championship Game, where the No. 3 Rattlers defeated the top-ranked Gamblers.

  • First-round byes in the postseason may provide another night of rest for the Top 2 ranked teams, but exiting year two of the 5-on-5 series, teams to earn the break are officially 0-4 in achieving their playoff glory. There’s definitely something to be said about getting the momentum flowing early. Just ask the No. 8 Missouri Thunder, who traversed their way to Championship Sunday on the highs of their Friday night victory.
