First-round matchups for 2023 PBR Teams Championship finalized as regular season concludes

Austin Gamblers and Kansas City Outlaws earn No. 1 and 2 seeds with accompanying first-round byes in Las Vegas on Oct. 20-22.

By Darci Miller

FORT WORTH, Texas – With the 2023 PBR Camping World Team Series season officially in the books with the conclusion of Rattler Days in Fort Worth, Texas, the 2023 PBR Teams Championship field is now set.

The Austin Gamblers (19-9) and Kansas City Outlaws (18-10) earned the No. 1 and No. 2 seeds, respectively, securing first-round byes at the Championship in Las Vegas on Oct. 20-22.

All eight teams qualify for the PBR Teams Championship, and Austin and Kansas City will have to wait and see who they play on Oct. 21 following the conclusion of competition on Oct. 20.

The playoffs are the same five-on-five, head-to-head format fans saw during the regular season. Two teams will be eliminated from the PBR Team Series Championship each day. The first two rounds of competition will feature a “Last Chance” playoff game for the three teams who lost their first game earlier in the night.

The Outlaws pushed the Gamblers to the very brink in Fort Worth, keeping their hopes of earning the No. 1 seed alive until Championship Sunday by defeating the Oklahoma Freedom 174.75-90 in the first game of the afternoon. Kansas City did everything they could to earn the top spot, going 3-0 at Rattler Days to put the pressure on Austin.

The Gamblers, who started the season 13-1 before going 6-8 in their last 14 games, stumbled in Fort Worth. After starting the weekend 0-2, they narrowly defeated the Missouri Thunder, 88.5-88.25, to put the season to bed and clinch the No. 1 seed – their second consecutive regular-season championship.

Fans can watch all of the PBR Team Series Championship from Las Vegas on CBS Sports Network.

Let’s take a look at the first-round matchups.

No. 3 Texas Rattlers (16-12) vs. No. 8 Missouri Thunder (8-20)

The Rattlers earned the No. 3 seed thanks to a huge weekend at their homestand, going a perfect 3-0. Brady Oleson converted aboard Smooth Over It in extra outs to secure the event win, their second of the season behind only Austin (4) and Kansas City (3).

It’s been a rough go for the Thunder in 2023, sitting at the bottom of the standings in both wins and qualified rides (28). But the No. 8 Nashville Stampede went from worst to first in 2022 to win the inaugural PBR Teams Championship, so if one thing’s for sure in Las Vegas, it’s that nothing’s for sure.

No. 4 Oklahoma Freedom (14-14) vs. No. 7 Nashville Stampede (11-17)

The Freedom had a disappointing end to an overall solid season, going 1-2 at Rattler Days to slide into the No. 4 seed heading into Vegas. A bright spot of late for the Freedom has been closer Caden Bunch, whose 86.5-point ride against the Arizona Ridge Riders secured Oklahoma the win on Saturday. Bunch is 9-for-14 (64%) for Oklahoma this season.

The Stampede, meanwhile, improved from their No. 8 finish in 2022 to slot in at No. 7 after a strong weekend in Fort Worth. Nashville went 2-1 and was in contention for its first event win of the season before falling to the Rattlers, 264-169, on Sunday. To kick off the weekend, the Stampede trounced the Gamblers, riding four bulls for a 342.35-88 win – a massive statement against the No. 1 team in the league.

No. 5 Arizona Ridge Riders (13-15) vs. No. 6 Carolina Cowboys (11-17)

Arizona earned the No. 5 seed for the second consecutive year. It worked out well enough for them in 2022, as they finished second in Las Vegas to the Stampede. The Ridge Riders went 1-2 in Fort Worth but are one of only four teams to earn event wins this season – they went a perfect 3-0 to win Freedom Fest in Oklahoma City in September.

The Cowboys have had a disappointing 2023 after entering the season as one of the favorites, having loaded up at the 2023 PBR Teams Draft with the additions of Sage Kimzey and Josh Frost. But the Cowboys’ stellar season failed to materialize, and they went 1-for-2 to conclude the season in Fort Worth.
