SACRAMENTO, Calif. – As Round 1 of the PBR (Professional Bull Riders) Unleash The Beast (UTB) Wrangler Long Live Cowboys Classic concluded on Saturday night, Jesse Petri (Dublin, Texas) remained on top.
The three-day event in Sacramento showcases a unique format for UTB fans. The draw featured 59 riders competing in Round 1, which involved riders split into two groups across the first two nights of competition.
Friday’s Round 1 featured the riders who were set to compete in Saturday’s 15/15 Bucking Battle, plus 20 additional riders. On Saturday night, the 24 riders who did not compete on the opening night finished Round 1.
In Round 2 on Sunday, all seeded riders and riders with exemptions are guaranteed to ride, plus any of the additional riders who recorded a qualified ride in Round 1. This will be followed by the championship round, featuring the Top 12 in the event aggregate.
On Friday night, Petri, who rode for the Missouri Thunder during the inaugural PBR Team Series in 2022, was paired with Reba McEntire’s The Hammer (Dakota Rodeo/Chad Berger). Catapulting from the chutes aboard the muscular animal athlete, Petri recorded a standout 89.75 points, which remained the highest ride score over the two-night round.
Starting the weekend at No. 10 in the UTB standings, Petri’s success in Round 1 earned him 28 world points to move him up two spots to No. 8.
Hot on Petri’s heels in the chase to dominate Round 1 was Indiana cowboy Tyler Manor (Portland, Indiana).
Making his UTB debut in Sacramento, Manor climbed aboard Karizma (Triplett Bucking Bulls/MeIvy) on Friday night for his Round 1 matchup. The 18-year-old standout matched his bovine partner jump-for-jump to record an 89-point score and sail into Sunday.
Manor claimed the No. 47 spot in the UTB standings after earning 18 points for his second-place finish.
World leader and Petri’s Missouri Thunder teammate Andrew Alvidrez (Seminole, Texas) clinched third place with his 87.25-point ride aboard Bubba G (Dakota Rodeo/ Brian & Ashley Pintar/ Clay Struve/ Chad Berger) as the weekend began.
On the eve of the third and final day of the event, Alvidrez held tight to his No. 1 spot in the UTB standings, collecting 17 UTB points. The talented Texan now sits 56.5 points ahead of two-time PBR World Champion Jose Vitor Leme (Ribas do Rio Pardo, Brazil) in the race for the 2023 world title. Leme finished Round 1 in sixth place courtesy of his 85.5-point ride aboard Havoc (Triplett/Sterk) on Friday.
Californian Aaron Williams (Pismo Beach, California) brought the rowdy crowd inside Golden 1 Center to a roar when he conquered Wasted Nights (Hart Cattle Co/Hale) on Friday night. His ride score of 86.75 points landed him in fourth place on the leaderboard.
Williams now sits at No. 48 in the standings after collecting 16 UTB points.
Rounding out the Top 5 of Round 1 was 2022 Arizona Ridge Rider Mauricio Gulla Moreira (Gaviao Peixoto, Brazil). The 23-year-old Brazilian was paired with Hostile (Diamond Bar Cattle/ L&B Bucking Bulls) for his Round 1 matchup.
Firing from the chute, Moreira, who spent most of 2022 recovering from hip surgery, recorded an 86.5-point score and collected 15 UTB points. Charging into Sacramento at No. 43 in the UTB standings, he now sits at No. 39.
