Three-time World Champion Silvano Alves wins Round 1 in St. Louis via monstrous 90-point ride

Marking his season debut, Alves vaulted to No. 10 in the Unleash The Beast World Championship standings

By Kacie Albert

ST. LOUIS – Delivering his first 90-point ride in more than a year, three-time PBR (Professional Bull Riders) World Champion Silvano Alves (Pilar do Sul, Brazil) was sensational Saturday evening in St. Louis, winning Round 1 of the St. Louis Invitational, presented by Cooper Tires, the second Unleash The Beast event of the 2023 season.

After missing the season-launch event last weekend in Arizona due to the loss of his father, Alves, fresh off winning the inaugural PBR Team Series Championship with the Nashville Stampede, traveled to the Show Me State laser-focused as he chases an unprecedented fourth World Championship.

As one of the final riders to leave the chutes, Alves was tasked with Savage (Blake Sharp/Michael Floyd/High Voltage Cattle). The stoic Brazilian matched the powerful animal athlete jump-for-jump as the electric crowd erupted in cheer.

Alves’s 8-second effort was awarded a monstrous, round-winning 90 points.

“My dad passed away last week,” Alves said dirtside. “This is for him.”

The score was Alves’s first 90-point ride since the championship round of the 2021 PBR World Finals and the 14th of his career.

The commanding score garnered Alves a crucial 29 Unleash The Beast points, launching him from unranked to No. 10 in the early 2023 PBR World Championship standings. He now trails No. 1 Brady Oleson (Blackfoot, Idaho) by 104.5 points.

On a night that the world’s best bull riders recorded 15 qualified rides, Oleson failed to convert. Unable to grow his lead atop the standings, he was upended by Chief (Blake Sharp/Michael Floyd) at a close 6.46 seconds.

Keyshawn Whitehorse (McCracken Spring, Utah) stayed red-hot Saturday night inside the Enterprise Center, remaining perfect during the 2023 season in logging his fourth consecutive ride.

The 2018 PBR Rookie of the Year finished eighth in the first round, compliments of his 84.5-point score atop Kickin’ Up Dust (C Check Bucking Bulls). Garnering 12 Unleash The Beast points, Whitehorse remained No. 3 in the standings and inched within 50.5 points of No. 1 Oleson.

Dalton Kasel (Muleshoe, Texas) was second in Round 1, netting 18 Unleash The Beast points.

To earn the silver finish, the charismatic Texan bested Firetime (Blake Sharp) for 88.5 points.

Also making his season debut after being sidelined by the flu for the first event of the campaign, Kasel surged from unranked to No. 15 in the standings. He is 115.5 points behind No. 1 Oleson.

Third was Manoelito de Souza Junior (Itamira, Brazil).

Souza’s early 87.25-point ride atop Homeboy (K-C Bucking Bulls/Joe & Nina Webb) earned him 17 Unleash The Beast points.

Luciano De Castro (Guzolandia, Brazil) delivered a critical 87-point trip on Crime Time (C Check Bucking Bulls) in the opening round of the PBR St. Louis Invitational, presented by Cooper Tires, to position himself fourth on the event leaderboard ahead of Championship Sunday.

In addition to propelling him within the Top 5, the score also garnered Castro 16 Unleash The Beast points.

Rounding out the Top 5 in fifth was 2016 PBR World Champion Cooper Davis (Jasper, Texas).

Davis rode Bottom’s Up (K-C Bucking Bulls/TCB Ranch) for 86.75 points to take home 15 Unleash The Beast points.

Chasing his second gold buckle, Davis rose from No. 6 to No. 4 in the standings. He is now within a mere 70.5 points of the No. 1 position.

The Missouri crowd ferociously cheered on two home-state hopefuls – Koltin Hevalow (Smithville, Missouri) and reigning PBR Rookie of the Year Bob Mitchell (Steelville, Missouri).

While Hevalow was bucked off by Midnight Flyer (Jane Clark/Gene Owen) in 3.08 seconds, Mitchell reached the requisite 8, finishing 11th in Round 1 via his 82-point effort atop Hillbilly Rock (New Frontier Rodeo).

Action for the 2023 PBR St. Louis Invitational, presented by Cooper Tires, will conclude with Round 2 and the championship round on Sunday, Dec. 4. Action gets underway at 1:45 p.m. CST.
