2022 in Review: Top 7 bull scores of the year

12.28.22 - Unleash The Beast

2022 in Review: Top 7 bull scores of the year

A great year of rides doesn't come without an intense year of great bull scores. Showing some love to our bovine athletes as 2022 comes to a close!

By James Youness

PUEBLO, Colo. – The best is always yet to come, but we’ve seen some pretty crazy bull scores in the past 12 months that are worth celebrating as the year quickly comes to a close.

While the top rides throughout 2022 stemmed from a mix of PBR Team Series and Unleash The Beast events, all seven of this year’s highest-marked bull scores hail from the premier series this time around the sun… and what a year it was!

PBR.com is taking a look at some of the best bull scores from 2022 ahead of this weekend’s year-end finale when the PBR Albany Invitational kicks off on Thursday at 7:45 p.m. ET, only on RidePass on Pluto TV.

1. Ridin Solo bucks off Dalton Kasel for career-best 47.5 points

While rising star Dalton Kasel’s ultimate goal each day is to stay atop his opponent for eight seconds, Ridin Solo understands his job just as well: not to let that happen. In near-perfect form, en route to establishing a career-best mark, Ridin Solo logged a 47.5-point bull score on Feb. 25 at the Bad Boy Mowers Mowdown in Little Rock, Arkansas, also earning the event’s Top Bull honors via the elite effort. There are a few reasons why Ridin Solo went on to be crowned the 2022 YETI World Champion bull, and this midseason buckoff during the Unleash The Beast tour is a prime example of what the bovine is capable of, as he improved to a perfect 4-0 against Kasel.

2. Charmer bests Derek Kolbaba for 47.25 points at Cooper Tires Invitational Presented by Ariat 15/15 Bucking Battle

Recording a career-best bull score during the Cooper Tires Invitational Presented by Ariat 15/15 Bucking Battle in Billings, Montana, on April 30, Charmer showed up and showed out by posting the highest score of the event: a 47.25-point effort matched against Derek Kolbaba. After exiting the chutes with an insanely high jump, Charmer had the advantage from the get-go. Making Kolbaba abandon ideal positioning early into the attempt with an initial jolt, Charmer quickly sent a second and third wave of bucking before forcing his opponent forward into a slap just 3.7 seconds in.

3. Night Hawk sheds Mason Taylor for 47.25 points during the 2022 PBR World Finals

The World Finals is big for everyone, both riders and bulls. The sport’s largest stage, rowdiest crowd, and biggest prizes coming together surely produces some of the year’s best rides, right? More like the year’s best bull scores, as Night Hawk and his bovine counterparts made some noise on the scoreboard throughout the eight-round event. After dispatching Rafael Henrique dos Santos in 3.74 seconds during the second round, Night Hawk extended his perfect event record to 2-0 in Round 4 by forcing Mason Taylor to an early exit. Violently spinning to the right, Taylor survived two quick bucks before being flung back into the chutes in a brief 2.31 seconds.

4. Dalton Kasel is no match for Night Hawk’s second 47.25-point World Finals outing

After starting Round 1 of the 2022 PBR World Finals via an impressive 90.25-point ride aboard Tulsa Time, the 23-year-old bucked off his next three opponents before stringing together 92 and 91.5-point efforts in the fifth and sixth rounds, eventually earning a bid in the championship round. Unfortunately for Kasel, a ferocious No. 7-ranked Night Hawk was waiting for him in the final round. Dispatching his opponent in an electrifying 3.35 seconds, Night Hawk exited his first-ever matchup with Kasel undefeated while knocking the rider down to an eighth-place World Finals finish.

5. Ridin Solo roughs up Joao Ricardo Vieira, earns 47-point mark at 2022 PBR World Finals

Joao Ricardo Vieira seemed destined for greatness after starting 3-for-3 during the 2022 PBR World Finals but went on to ride only one of his last five bulls. Paired against the 2022 YETI World Champion Bull-to-be in Round 4, the successful ride didn’t come aboard Ridin Solo.

After being launched to the ground in a quick 4.8 seconds, Vieira sustained two nasty shots from his opponent lying on the dirt but was astonishingly able to walk away under his own power. While the veteran eventually finished in sixth place at the season-ending event, Ridin Solo’s elite 47-point bull score improved him to 2-0 all-time against Vieira and further boosted his odds of taking home the real prize.

6. Moonlight Party collects 47 points, dumps Dalton Kasel at Ariat Invitational 15/15 Bucking Battle

For as many qualified rides as Kasel has recorded in 2022, he’s been on the wrong end of surrendering some of the year’s top bull scores, too. A shocking 1.67 seconds after nodding his head, Kasel was lifted into the air before bouncing off Moonlight Party twice and spinning 360 degrees off the back of the bovine and into the dirt. At the time, the 47-point outing represented the best bull score of the season.

7. Ridin Solo sends Ezekiel Mitchell flying with 47-point showcase at World Finals

Are we dreaming, or are we mentioning Ridin Solo having another insane performance at World Finals again? This time paired against Ezekiel Mitchell, it’s rides like this that really make you appreciate the talents of bulls like the 2022 World Champ. After exploding out of the chutes and spinning to the right, the bovine immediately shifted gears, rocketing to the left. By the time he bucked for the third time, back to the right, Mitchell was sent flying to the dirt in just 3.35 seconds.
