CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – With waves crashing below, the PBR (Professional Bull Riders) once again bucked bulls on the deck of the historic USS Lexington Museum in Corpus Christi, Texas, in the sport’s headlining annual charitable event.
The 2021 PBR Air Force Reserve Cowboys for a Cause brought the world’s top bull riders to the historic “Blue Ghost” to raise money for Farmer Veteran Coalition. Additionally, the entire rider purse was donated to the family of the late rider Amadeu Campos Silva (Atair, Brazil).
Following the passing of Silva, the event’s 24 riders came together to donate their $100,000 event purse to the young rider’s family, which was matched by PBR. League partners Ariat and Pendleton Whisky also donated $25,000 each. Fans can also directly contribute to the Silva family, matched by PBR up to $100,000, by visiting www.pbr.com/amadeumemorial
Joining forces with new PBR partner Kubota, along with Bad Boy Mowers, the event also raised $100,000 for Farmer Veteran Coalition, which provides continued learning, grants and other support to veterans who have joined the agricultural community. Army Master Sargent and 21-year veteran Ben Henbest, a Fayetteville, Arkansas resident, was honored during the event by Farmer Veteran Coalition and Kubota and was presented with a 2021 Kubota MX Series tractor to manage his growing cattle operation.
Eli Vastbinder (Statesville, North Carolina) led Team Bad Boy Mowers to victory as the winds swept in from the Gulf of Mexico with an 84.75-point ride aboard Game Day (Next Level Bucking Bulls) in the championship round.
In Round 1, Vastbinder had joined forces with Mauricio Gulla Moreira (Gavaio Peixoto, Brazil), who turned in an 88.25-point ride on Leopold (United Pro Rodeo), to get Team Bad Boy Mowers into the championship round.
The North Carolinian Vastbinder earned 28 world points during the event, moving up one spot to No. 21 in the world. Moreira earned 38 world points, pushing him into the Top 10 in the world standings, at No. 10.
Team South Point, led by world No. 1 Jose Vitor Leme (Ribas do Rio Pardo, Brazil), finished the event in second. Leme joined Vastbinder as the only riders to go a perfect 2-for-2 on the day.
Leme secured the team’s second-place finish with an 84.25-point trip aboard Udder Lover (Hart Cattle Co/Hale/Randy Wood) in the championship round, following yet another 90-point ride earlier in the event.
The reigning World Champion rode Steel Wishes (D&H Cattle Company) for 90.75 points in Round 1, while his teammate Eduardo Aparecido (Gouvelandia, Brazil) bested Diamond Cutter (United Pro Rodeo) for 89 points to qualify Team South Point for the championship round.
Leme earned an event high 67 world points, increasing his lead over world No. 2 Kaique Pacheco (Itatiba, Brazil) to 586.5 points.
Cody Jesus (Window Rock, Arizona) led Team Wrangler with his 89.75-point ride in Round 1 but was unable to meet the requisite 8-second whistle in the championship round.
The Navajo man earned an important 48 world points, and now sits No. 24 in the world standings.
Following today’s special Cowboys for a Cause broadcast on CBS Television Network, the riders and bulls of the PBR return to action in Anaheim, California, for the PBR Monster Energy Invitational, presented by Cooper Tires, from the Honda Center on Sept. 10-11.
