PUEBLO, Colo. - Centura Health-St. Mary-Corwin Medical Center and PBR (Professional Bull Riders) have announced a new relationship that will allow the hospital to provide high-quality health care services and care to the world-class athletes who utilize and participate in events and activities at the PBR Sport Performance Center in Pueblo, Colo.

The agreement makes Centura Health and St. Mary-Corwin the official sports medicine provider for the PBR Sport Performance Center, allowing the health care system to provide PBR members with access to athletic training and sports medicine services from leading physicians and expedited orthopedic services.

The PBR Sport Performance Center, the first training facility in the world tailored to Western Sports athletes, spans 18,000 square-feet on the Pueblo Riverwalk. The state-of-the-art training fitness center provides a training ground for the athletes of today and tomorrow. With clients from NFL players, all disciplines of Western Sports, MLB, and many more, the Sport Performance Center is led by former NFL defensive tackle Antwon Burton.

“Bringing in the experts and resources of Centura Health and St. Mary-Corwin is a significant benefit to the athletes across all sports who train at the PBR Sport Performance Center,” said Burton, Executive Director of the PBR Sport Performance Center. “Becoming a member of the Centura Health Network supports our goal of giving all the athletes we serve the opportunity to be even healthier and safer in their training and activities.”

With an anticipated start in early fall, under the agreement, Centura Health and St. Mary-Corwin will provide the following services at no cost to PBR members using the PBR Sport Performance Center:

  • Orthopedic surgeons and athletic trainers on-site for special events hosted by the PBR Sport Performance Center.
  • On-site patient exams and rehabilitation programs.
  • On-site athletic training services.
  • Expedited access to orthopedic services for any PBR member.
  • Concierge orthopedic services, including initial orthopedic evaluation and expedited access to diagnostic imaging services.
  • Referrals to additional sports medicine providers.
  • Delivery of injury prevention and other health care educational information.
  • Concussion management, including baseline and post-concussion assessments using the XLNTbrain platform for concussion management or other technology as required.

“This relationship will allow these high-performance athletes to receive the best care that St. Mary-Corwin Medical Center and Centura Health provide,” said St. Mary-Corwin CEO Mike Cafasso. “It is an honor for the hospital to be aligned with such a prestigious sports organization, and we’re pleased to be able to provide our high-quality services as PBR’s health partner of choice.”

St. Mary-Corwin, driven by its commitment to Pueblo and its healing ministry, strives to provide high-quality services through its award-winning orthopedics program, long considered one of the hospital’s core areas of clinical strength. Through the arrangement, the hospital will be able to provide the PBR Sport Performance Center with access to the most advanced technology, leading physicians and the latest surgical techniques.

“We are excited for this new relationship with PBR,” said Dr. Alex Romero, orthopedic surgeon with St. Mary-Corwin Physician Partners – Orthopedics who will join Dr. Michael VanManen in supervising the orthopedic services provided by the hospital. “We have provided occasional event coverage for the PBR in the past, but this new role will allow us to be more involved with the training aspect, and ideally, allow for more continuity of care. By doing so, we hope to have a meaningful impact on the athletes who train and compete at the PBR Sport Performance Center.”
