LAS VEGAS – It’s been almost impossible to miss Ezekiel Mitchell at the 2019 PBR World Finals.
The Rookie of the Year contender has walked the blackcarpet each night as if it were his own personal fashion show, his looks eye-catching and bold.
On night one, a jacket covered in deep blue sequins. Night two’s ensemble was a white jacket with a subtle pattern. On night three, he donned a black jacket inlaid with sparkling gold thread.
And when told he’s one of the best dressed bull riders at the World Finals, he’s truly affronted.
“One of the best dressed?” he exclaims.
Until now, however, his actual bull riding hadn’t been nearly as show-stealing as his fashion sense. Mitchell bucked off Hammerhead Blu in 5.47 seconds in Round 1 and Zorro in 5.41 seconds in Round 2.
When he drew Bad Beagle for Round 3, Mitchell knew it was his opportunity to get back in the win column.
“I’ve watched that bull forever, before I even got on the tour, and I was like, ‘That’s a bull that would fit me to a tee,’” Mitchell said. “He’s just a bigger bull, and he’s up and down. That’s the way I learned how to ride bulls, up and down, not side to side. That’s the way everybody should ride bulls, and that’s the way a lot of guys do ride bulls, but I’m a bigger guy so I need a bigger bull.”
That bigger bull did indeed fit him to a tee, as Mitchell rode for 88.25 points – his first career qualified ride at the World Finals.
Finally, the monkey is off his back.
“I never had any jitters or anything really coming into this,” he said. “I knew my job, and I knew I was coming here to do something great. I just was putting it all together, not thinking about it too much, not thinking about the points and everything else. That’s really what clouded my mind. I was just blessed to be able to pick a good bull and get the job done.”
Mitchell is locked in a hotly contested Rookie of the Year race. He is now ranked No. 4 and 713.75 points behind No. 1 rookie Dalton Kasel heading into Round 4 on Friday night at T-Mobile Arena.
Kasel rode Too Dirty for 88.5 points in Round 1, but he has since bucked off Oz in Round 2 and Bezerk in Round 3.
After Mitchell dismounted from Bad Beagle, he and Flint Rasmussen spread their arms and ran around on the dirt, mimicking airplanes.
“That’s been kind of our thing here lately whenever things go great,” Mitchell said. “Me and him do the little airplane because we’re flying, man. We’re just on cloud nine, because I’m just tickled. I’m just happy to be here, and be able to live my dream. This is my dream. It’s been my dream forever. So I’m excited to be here, so whatever happens, happens. It just goes with the flow.”
Mitchell also happens to be living his dream with his cousin, Ouncie Mitchell. The two are both competing at their first World Finals together, and Ezekiel is not taking it for granted in the slightest, even as Ouncie is currently 0-for-3.
“I ain’t going to lie, I’ve cried this week because we both made the Finals,” Mitchell said. “To be here with him is unreal, and hopefully we can get him to pull his head out of his butt and get them rode because he has all the talent in the world to do it.”
Fittingly, it was the night that Ezekiel was decked out in gold that he finally got a ride on the board.
He says he grew up seeing his dad wear similar trendsetting looks and had to carry on the tradition on bull riding’s biggest stage.
“My dad, growing up, he’s always had the flyest suits in church,” Mitchell said. “He’ll be in a full pink suit, or a full purple suit. It kind of rubbed off on me. I’ve always said when I made the Finals I was going to be as flashy as I could possibly be. So I just went and found everything that was shiny and looked cool.”
Mitchell has drawn Lester Gillis (48-6, UTB) for Round 4.
Fans can watch Round 4 live on CBS Sports Network at 11 p.m. ET and on RidePass 10:40 ET.
Mitchell says to expect him to go 90 in the arena, but is far cagier on what to expect him to wear.
“That’s a secret,” he said. “Tune in to see. Get your popcorn ready because it’s going down again.”
