CHEYENNE, Wyo. – Hollywood could not have written a better script.
One year ago here in Cheyenne, Chase Outlaw was pulled down on a bull named War Cloud (Peggy VanCleve), breaking 30 bones in his face, requiring emergency surgery to insert 11 plates and 68 screws. Tonight, in front of a raucous crowd at Cheyenne Frontier Days, he was the Last Cowboy Standing, winning the prestigious PBR major, taking home a paycheck of $156,856.41, and 875 world points.
The Arkansas cowboy who was advised by some to find another profession is now the No.1 bull rider in the world.
“What doesn’t break you will build you, and I owe it all to the man upstairs,” Outlaw said. “He’s not done with me.”
Outlaw’s monster performance in Round 2 – a remarkable 93.5-point ride aboard Smooth Wreck (Dakota Rodeo/Chad Berger/Clay Struve/Diamond Willow) – earned him the high marked ride of the year and helped carry him into the final three rounds. Smooth Wreck earned the title of YETI “Built for the Wild” Bull of the Event with his outstanding 46.25-point bull score catapulting the bovine athlete into first place in the Yeti World Championship Bull race.
Outlaw’s other qualified ride came in Round 4 when he rode Rising Sun (Dakota Rodeo/Chad Berger/Clay Struve/Heald Pro Bulls) for 90.5 points. The 27-year-old came off before the 8 in Round 3 on Budakon (Hart Cattle Company) and in Round 5 atop Cochise (Jane Clark/Gene Owen).
Lucas Divino (Nova Crixas Goias, B) finished second at PBR’s debut at Cheyenne Frontier Days after earning a spot in Round 5 based on his aggregate score at the end of Round 4. He conquered Stretch (Dakota Rodeo/Chad Berger/Clay Struve/Heald Pro Bulls) in Round 2 where he recorded an impressive 89.25 points and M.A.G.A (TNT Bucking Bulls/Hart Cattle Co) for 88.5 points in Round 3.
Divino hit the dirt after only 4.38 seconds in Round 4 on South Texas Gangster (Dakota Rodeo/ Julie Rosen/Clay Struve/Chad Berger), and in Round 5 two-time World Champion Bull SweetPro’s Bruiser(D&H Cattle Co/Buck Cattle Co.) dispatched the Brazilian before the buzzer. Divino pocketed $21,882.5 and 365 world points. After the event, he moved from No. 18 to No. 10 in the world standings.
Cooper Davis (Jasper, Texas) rode his Round 1 victory to a third-place finish for the event. Despite being bucked off his Round 2 bull Heartbreak Kid (D&H Cattle/Buck Cattle/Erwin Cattle) and Red Moon (Dakota Rodeo/Chad Berger/Clay Struve/H&C Bucking Bulls) in Round 3, the Texas cowboy picked up a $10,600 paycheck and 125 world points. Davis remains No. 6 in the world standings.
2017 Rookie of the Year Jose Vitor Leme (Ribas do Rio Pardo, Brazil) picked up a total of 95 world points, along with a $4,612.82 check for his fourth-place finish. The 22-year-old covered Big City (Plummer/Hart Cattle Co.) in Round 2 for 87.25 points. The Brazilian came down in Round 3 off of Hocus Pocus (D&H Cattle/Barthold/Almand), and in Round 4 Heavy D (Paradigm Bull Company) proved to be too much bull for Leme, who fell from No. 1 in the world standings, to No. 2.
Cody Teel (Kountze, Texas) rounded out the top 5 after riding Smooth Operator (Dakota Rodeo/Julie Rosen/Clay Struve/Chad Berger) for 91.75 points in Round 2. He came down early off Oz (Hart Cattle Company) in Round 3. He collected 75 world points and $4,189.74. Teel entered and left the weekend at No. 5 in the world standings.
The Top 35 bull riders in the world will now head to Tulsa, Oklahoma, for the Express Ranches Classic presented by Osage Casino at the BOK Center August 10-11.
The action from Rounds 2-5 in Cheyenne will be available on RidePass starting at 8 a.m. ET on Wednesday, July 24.
