Looking back at Mason Lowe’s memorable rides

The inaugural Ridin' with Mason Lowe Invitational is set for May 11 in Cassville, Missouri.

PUEBLO, Colo. – The inaugural Ridin’ with Mason Lowe Invitational, presented by Heald Pro Bulls and Motiv8 Sports Group, is set to take place Saturday night at the Bill Hailey Arena in Cassville, Missouri.

Lowe, an Exeter, Missouri native, passed away on Jan. 15 because of injuries sustained during a PBR event at the Denver Coliseum.

Proceeds from the Touring Pro Division event this weekend will be donated to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.

In 2015, Lowe made a 3-hour drive following the Music City Knockout in Nashville, Tennessee, to be with his then 6-year-old niece, Blazi, who was scheduled to undergo multiple surgeries to remove a brain tumor the next day, in Memphis at St. Jude’s.

Lowe’s heart was always on full display whenever he was around his niece, and it was through her bouts with cancer that Lowe became interested in volunteering at children hospitals or other functions.

Now some of Lowe’s best friends will come together in Cassville to ride in Mason’s memory and for a good cause.

You can also bet that any of the 40 cowboys in attendance will be hoping to do their best Mason Lowe impression and spur one for 90 points in honor of their fallen bull rider.

No. 2 Chase Outlaw, No. 3 Joao Ricardo Vieira, No. 4 Jess Lockwood, No. 14 Cannon Cravens, No. 15 Matt Triplett, No. 18 Alisson de Souza, No. 27 Danilo Carlos Sobrinho, No. 29 Brennon Eldred and No. 32 Scottie Knapp are expected to compete.

Here is a look back at five of Lowe’s most memorable rides.

91 points on SweetPro’s Bruiser (2016 – Oklahoma City, Oklahoma)

Lowe may not have gone on to win the 2016 Express Employment Professionals Invitational in Oklahoma City, but his 4-for-4 performance, highlighted by a career-best 91 points on three-time World Champion SweetPro’s Bruiser, was proof that Lowe was a heavy hitter when the stars aligned.

90.75 points on Smooth Operator (2017 – Arlington, Texas)

The ride that will forever remain synonymous with Lowe’s name came at the 2017 Iron Cowboy competition at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas.

Lowe always named his 90.75-point ride on Smooth Operator as his personal best.

He became the second rider in five years at the time to conquer the annual World Champion-contending bull when he rode the bovine superstar to win the $26,000 Ride Score Championship at the PBR Major.

To this day, Lowe is one of only four riders to have successfully ridden Smooth Operator in 92 attempts at all levels of competition. Current world leader Jose Vitor Leme recently rode Smooth Operator for 92.5 points in Columbus, Ohio, for 92.5 points.

90. 5 points on Tractor Tippin (2017 – Glendale, Arizona)

Mason Lowe’s ride on Tractor Tippin didn’t even win him the championship round in Glendale, Arizona, two years ago. He actually tied for the round win with 2016 World Champion Cooper Davis (90.5 points on Spotted Demon).

However, nine-time World Champion Ty Murray’s set-up on CBS Sports Network before Lowe nodded for the gate was another testament to what kind of cowboy Lowe was.

“I love it when I see this guy bear down and just try from the bottom of his guts,” Murray said. “That is when he is at his best.”

The ride capped off Lowe’s 3-for-3, second-place finish inside Gila River Arena.

Murray followed up Lowe’s ride, which would end up being his last 90 on the premier series, by saying, “Here is the thing about Mason Lowe. When he grits his teeth and sets his jaw, like right here at the end, he bears down and gets around there even when he knows it is going to rocket him to the dirt.”

90 points on Brutus (2016 – Albuquerque, New Mexico)

Two months after his ride on Bruiser, Lowe won one of the most prestigious bull ridings on the PBR calendar when he went 3-for-4 at the 2016 Ty Murray Invitational in Albuquerque, New Mexico. He clinched his first career victory with a 90-point ride on Brutus despite torn cartilage in his riding wrist.

88 points on Mason’s Missouri Golden (2018 – Bismarck, North Dakota)

Lowe’s ride on Huckleberry is not mathematically the fifth-highest scored ride of his career, but it was one of two rides during Lowe’s final victory at any level of competition.

The Missouri cowboy began Chad Berger’s annual PBR bull riding in Bismarck, North Dakota, with 88 points on Huckleberry and then also rode Standing Rock for 86.5 points to eventually win the TPD event.

Berger and Mike and Christina Heald renamed Huckleberry as Mason’s Missouri Golden in honor of Lowe earlier this year.
