Jose Vitor Leme wins Ty Murray Invitational

05.21.19 - Unleash The Beast

Jose Vitor Leme wins Ty Murray Invitational

2017 Rookie of the Year extends his No. 1 lead in world standings.

By PBR

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – After an action-packed three days at Dreamstyle Arena, also known as the “The Pit,” Jose Vitor Leme (Ribas do Rio Pardo, Brazil) collected his second PBR (Professional Bull Riders) elite series win of the 2019 season at the PBR Unleash The Beast, Ty Murray Invitational, presented by Isleta Resort & Casino.

Leme was the only competitor to go a perfect 4-for-4 over a weekend featuring one of the top bullpens on the 2019 tour.

In Round 3, Leme quickly took the overall lead in the event after his ride aboard Taco Cat (Dakota Rodeo/Chad Berger/WSM Auctioneers/Rex Linn) for 88.25 points. The energy in the building intensified as he took to the dirt as the final rider out in the championship round on Sunday afternoon to record a monster 92.75-point ride on Cochise (Jane Clark / Gene Owen).

The Brazilian cowboy earned 700 world points with the victory, further widening the gap between himself and the No. 2 rider in the world standings Chase Outlaw (Hamburg, Arkansas) to 489.16 points. Leme walked away with a $39,202.86 paycheck for his big weekend.

The win also earned him a spot at the Komatsu Equipment Days of ’47 Cowboy Games & Rodeo, presented by Zions Bank, on July 19-24 in Salt Lake City, Utah.

After riding Bezerk (BMC Bucking Bulls/Jenkins Cattle Co.) in the championship round for the only other 90-point ride of the event, Arkansas cowboy Outlaw finished in second place. During Round 3, Outlaw was sent to the ground early by Monkey (Cooper/Scruggs Bucking Bulls). Despite the buckoff, the No. 2 rider in the world standings earned 395 points toward the world standings and $20,265 for his efforts throughout the weekend.

Joao Ricardo Vieira (Itatinga, Sao Paulo, Brazil), collected a third-place finish as he continued his 2019 hot streak. Although Biker Bob (Dakota Rodeo/Chad Berger/Clay Struve/H&C Bucking Bulls) got the best of Vieira in the final round, the Brazilian cowboy holds his No. 3 spot in the world standings. In Sunday’s earlier Round 3, Vieira conquered Sitting Bull (Dakota Rodeo/Chad Berger/Clay Struve/Diamond Willow) with a 88.75-point ride. Vieira earned 310 points toward the world standings along with $12,882.86.

As the world title race heats up, Vieira trails Leme by 861.66 points in the world standings.

After his Round 2 win on Saturday night, Matt Triplett (Columbia Falls, Montana) came up just shy of the 8 in the championship round, hitting the dirt at 7.09 seconds aboard M.A.G.A (TNT Bucking Bulls/Hart Cattle Co.) In Round 3, Triplett covered Sniper (M Rafter E Bucking Bulls) for 87 points. The Montana native left “The Pit’ with 215 world points and $9,882.86.

Rounding out the Top 5 was Stetson Lawrence (Williston, North Dakota). During the championship round, he dominated Sosa’s Alley Cat (JD Nix/Sosa Buckers) for 89.5 points and brought the roaring New Mexico crowd to its feet. Previously in Round 3, Lawrence came down early against Losing My Religion (Broken Arrow Bucking Bulls). For his weekend efforts, he earned 175 world points and $7,600.

In between Sunday’s Round 3 and the championship round, fans witnessed the final round of the famed “Beast Pit” exclusive to the Ty Murray Invitational. Bullfighter-like gladiators from Shorty Gorham’s American Freestyle Bullfighters tested their agility against some of the strongest animal athletes in the business. The winner of the 2019 “Beast Pit” competition was the return champion from 2018 Alex McWilliams for his crowd-rousing tricks and overwhelming audience applause. For his efforts, McWilliams will leave Albuquerque with a commemorative sword and $10,000 paycheck.

The YETI “Built for the Wild” Bull of the Event was Lil 2 Train (Bill Hinson/Gene Owen/Braindead Cattle Co.), who exploded from the chute like a pack of dynamite in Saturday night’s special 15/15 Bucking Battle. The bovine athlete dispatched Leme after 5.33 seconds, earning a massive bull score of 46.5.

Action from Round 3 and the championship round can be seen in its entirety on RidePass.com or via the RidePass mobile app starting on Monday, May 20 at 8 a.m. ET.

The Top 35 bull riders in the world will now head to Green Bay, Wisconsin, for the Green Bay Invitational presented by Oneida Casino and North Star Mohican Casino Resort at the Resch Center May 31- June 2.
