Tacoma draw: Mauney out with fractured rib; eight alternates called up

With nine Top 35 riders out, alternates have their opportunity to make a move.

PUEBLO, Colo. – Fans hoping to see two-time World Champion J.B. Mauney notch another major PBR milestone will have to wait at least another week.

Mauney, who is tied with 2004 World Champion Mike Lee for the second-most qualified rides in PBR history (525), has decided to take a week off after fracturing his left rib last weekend at the Caterpillar Classic in Kansas City, Missouri, when he was kicked by Wild Goose.

Mauney informed the PBR competition department this week that he will not be competing at the upcoming Tacoma Invitational, presented by Cooper Tires.

The No. 10-ranked bull rider in the world does not expect to be out of competition for long, though.

“Just recharging the batteries,” Mauney told PBR.com.

Mauney has been able to overcome a multitude of injuries this year, but the list has been growing almost every week.

In only eight Unleash The Beast events, the 32-year-old has torn his groin, broke his left leg, tore his left ACL/MCL and fractured that rib in only eight Unleash The Beast events.

Mauney is going to take a week off to let his fractured rib heal some before most likely returning for the First PREMIER Bank PREMIER Bankcard Invitational in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, on April 5-7.

“I will more than likely be there,” Mauney said. “(The ribs) are not too bad. Just sore.”

MULTIPLE TOP 35 RIDERS DEALING WITH INJURIES

Mauney is one of three World Champions and Top-10 riders out for Tacoma because of injuries.

No. 2 Jess Lockwood remains out of competition because of a broken left collarbone, while 2016 World Champion Cooper Davis is out due to a lingering injury to his riding hand.

They are three of nine Top 35 riders not able to ride inside the Tacoma Dome on Saturday night (9:30 p.m. ET).

Also out of competition is No. 14 Aaron Kleier (personal choice/UTB suspension), No. 19 Cody Nance (dislocated left hip), No. 23 Cody Heffernan (visa issues), No. 28 Brennon Eldred (broken jaw), No. 34 Stormy Wing (head injury) and No. 35 Cliff Richardson (personal choice/UTB suspension).

WILL ALTERNATES TAKE ADVANTAGE?

The injury-riddled Top 35 gives riders on the outside of the Top 35 a chance to make their move.

There will be eight alternates competing in Tacoma, as well as one injury exempt rider (2018 World Champion and No. 87 Kaique Pacheco) and one Pendleton Whisky Velocity Tour invite (No. 59 Brady Sims).

No. 36 Stetson Lawrence (-11.67 points behind Top 35), No. 37 Mason Taylor (-15.84 point), No. 39 Marcus Mast (-27.5 points), No. 40 Ruger Piva (-52.5 points), No. 41 Tanner Byrne (-55 points), No. 43 Joe Frost (-57.5 points), No. 47 Lawson Nobbs (-77.5 points) and No. 48 Jordan Hansen (-80 points) are the eight alternates.

Sims is competing in his first premier series event since breaking his left leg (tibia and fibula) on April 2, 2017. The Holt, Missouri, cowboy missed the rest of the 2017 season because of the injury.

The now 25-year-old then tore a groin muscle and only competed in six PBR events in 2018.

Sims earned the invite to Tacoma via his victory at the March 2 Velocity Tour event in Hampton, Virginia.

“I am pretty excited,” Sims said. “Hell, it is just fun to be back. Gosh dang it, I have been out of the game for what feels like forever. I am just so excited to be back.”

OUTLAW TAKES 130-POINT LEAD INTO TACOMA

Fresh off his win in Kansas City, newly minted world leader Chase Outlaw will look to build on his 130-point lead atop the standings with No. 2 Lockwood set to be out for another 4 to 6 weeks.

Outlaw faces Budakon (16-3, UTB) in Round 1.

The 26-year-old, though, could still lose the No. 1 ranking to either No. 3 Joao Ricardo Vieira (-177.5 points) or No. 4 Jose Vitor Leme (-245.84 points) in Washington.

Vieira has drawn Tykro Pound Sand (1-3, UTB) and Leme will see War Cry (6-4, UTB).

Vieira rode Pound Sand for 81.75 points during Round 3 of the 2018 PBR World Finals.

ADDITIONAL ROUND 1 REMATCHES

Cannon Cravens vs. Red Dawn (81.5 points in Jackson Hole, Wyoming, in 2018)
Dakota Buttar vs. Hangman (89.25 points in Glendale, Arizona, in 2018)
Lawson Nobbs vs. Get Shorty (3.83 seconds in Billings, Montana, in 2018)
Luciano de Castro vs. Udder Lover (three buckoffs)
Tanner Byrne vs. Acting Crazy (3.87 seconds in Tacoma last year)
