DULUTH, Ga. – Kenny McElroy clearly remembers four instances when Preacher’s Kid completely barreled him over at home at K-Bar-C Bucking Bulls headquarters in Mount Orab, Ohio.
McElroy and his partner Rodney Mitchel have raised Preacher’s Kid since the bull was a calf, and McElroy has had to deal with Preacher’s Kid’s attitude and hot-headedness throughout the 4-year-old’s life.
If Preacher’s Kid was not tearing up panels and causing havoc on the ranch, then he was honing in on his loving owner with reckless abandon.
“I’ve raised him from a calf, me and my partner RD Cattle, Rodney Mitchell, and he was mean,” McElroy said. “I mean that dude was a bad cat. When he was a yearling and a 2-year-old, he was a handful. He’s just mean. He would run you over, tear up panels.
“I’ve been run over enough times that I don’t want to do it again.”
Regardless, McElroy loves his rising superstar and the attitude he brings to the arena every weekend.
That’s why it was no surprise to him to see Preacher’s Kid take a few wild laps around Infinite Energy Arena following the bull’s career-high score of 46 points in the championship round of the U.S. Border Patrol Invitational.
The unfortunate recipient of Preacher Kid’s vicious sermon Sunday afternoon was Stormy Wing.
The eight-time PBR World Finals qualifier lasted 2.61 seconds as Preacher’s Kid was named the YETI “Built For The Wild” Bull of the Event.
“I’m not trying to make no excuses or anything because the son of a gun bucked me off, but I slid up there on the latch and he threw me on the inside and my damn foot got caught on the damn slide for about half a jump,” Wing said. “That’s what pulled me over. I was behind and there’s no catching up on bucking bulls like that.”
It took a few minutes before Preacher’s Kid was done showboating in the arena after his buckoff.
“You can see it when he’s out there, he’s got a little heat to him,” McElroy said. “It was kind of funny tonight. He was kind of running around. He didn’t want to go out (of the arena), and then I stepped out there and hollered at him, and of course, he went out.
“He’s just so personable now. He’s really calmed down.”
Maybe at home he is calmer, but in the arena Preacher’s Kid was fired up, kicking his back legs high toward the rafters and above the bucking chutes.
Wing said that Preacher’s Kid is actually the kind of bull he would like to get on once again.
Wing compared Preacher’s Kid to three-time World Champion Bull SweetPro’s Bruiser.
Bruiser teamed up with Wing for a 95.25-point ride two years ago at the Ty Murray Invitational in Albuquerque, New Mexico.
“I felt all of him,” Wing said. “But being in the middle of him, he spends so much time in the air. He is like Bruiser. When they spend that much time in the air, they don’t buck very much and they’re not powerful because they’re in the air. I was going to beat him, I just screwed it up.”
Preacher’s Kid is the son of High Stakes and a cow out of I’m a Gangster.
“We are really pleased with that,” McElroy said. “We’ve got great bloodlines.”
The ABBI Classic Bull won the 2018 ABBI Derby Championship, and he is evolving into a rising star in the World Champion Bull race.
This weekend was the first time Preacher’s Kid was marked higher than 44.5 points, but he was well worth the 46 points he earned.
“Preacher’s Kid was special,” PBR Director of Livestock Cody Lambert said. “He is in that 47.5 to 48-point range as far as I am concerned. He is one of the top ABBI Bulls. At Oklahoma City was the first time I saw him in the ABBI Classic, and I have been putting him in the championship round ever since.”
Preacher’s Kid is 4-0 this season and is averaging 44.56 points per out.
McElroy believes the best has yet to come for his bull, which may mean an ABBI Classic title this fall and maybe a shot at World Champion Bull.
Preacher’s Kid will next buck at the Caterpillar Classic in Kansas City, Missouri, on March 23. Fans can watch Round 1 exclusively on RidePass at 7:30 p.m. ET.
“He’s consistently just keeps getting better and better,” McElroy said. “I’m just happy right now. Our bulls are doing fantastic, but Preacher’s Kid, he’s special.
“He’s one of my boys.”
