ARLINGTON, Texas – Chase Outlaw slipped on the blue Team USA Eagles jersey on Thursday afternoon inside AT&T Stadium and looked over at his teammates with a grin.
“Now this is badass,” Outlaw said with his Arkansas twang.
Outlaw is one of only two riders on the Eagles roster that has never competed for the red, white and blue.
The prestige of competing for one’s country has not been lost on him either.
“Shoot, every weekend they say Chase Outlaw from Hamburg, Arkansas, and you are from your hometown and your state,” Outlaw said. “This is representing your whole nation. It is a pretty badass feeling to represent your nation.”
Alternate Sage Kimzey is also a first-time Team USA representative.
Team USA Eagles coach Justin McBride was with his team Thursday afternoon and said that the Eagles certainly will be feeding off Outlaw.
Outlaw would have already competed for the Americans at the first two Global Cups if not for shoulder surgery in 2017 and facial reconstructive surgery last summer.
“He was supposed to be on the other two teams, but you can already tell (of his impact),” McBride said. “Just that guy’s energy. He bleeds red, white and blue. I guarantee that if you cut him open, that is what comes out.
“He is fired up and ready to rock. That kind of stuff is contagious. It gets everybody there. Not that these guys aren’t. It is just a good additive to have in there.”
History has not been on the home country’s side when it comes to international bull riding competitions.
Team Canada finished the inaugural Global Cup in Edmonton in third place, and Team Australia finished the Sydney Global Cup in second place.
Both of those countries had home field advantage with 14 riders.
In fact, looking back at the four previous PBR World Cups, no home team has ever won an international bull riding team competition.
The home team is 0-6.
The United States will have two opportunities this weekend with the Eagles and the Team USA Wolves – an all Native American squad.
The team with the highest combined aggregate score based on their Top 12 rides will be the event winner.
Fans can watch the Global Cup on Saturday (7:30 p.m. ET) and Sunday (1:30 p.m. ET) on RidePass. There will also be a highlight show on CBS national television Sunday at noon ET.
To ride in front of the United States of America is just another reason to leave it all hanging, Outlaw said.
“This is our home turf,” Outlaw said, almost at a loss for words. “This is like getting to compete for a national title, a state title or a Super Bowl at your home stadium.
“This is Cowboys Stadium.”
That energy is going to help Outlaw this weekend as he looks to ride through potential broken ribs.
Outlaw did not get X-rays this week after potentially breaking ribs on his right side last weekend during the Express Ranches Invitational 15/15 Bucking Battle when Night Sweats caught Outlaw with a horn.
The ribs did not stop Outlaw from tying with Eagles teammate Cody Teel for the Round 2 victory in Oklahoma City the next day with his 86.75-point ride on Real Gun.
Outlaw said the ribs are just as bad this week as they were when he woke up in Oklahoma City, but that he has no doubts about his ability to help lead Team USA to victory.
“Not at all, “Outlaw said. “It is all good. It hasn’t been that bad. Plus, I haven’t been taking it easy. I have been keeping the pain to them so when it does hurt it isn’t a shock to me.”
Outlaw had been working around his house and doing all he can to not favor the ribs prior to making the six-hour drive to Arlington this week.
The seven-time PBR World Finals qualifier said he would have pulled out of the event if he felt he could not contribute to the team.
“If I was hurt and injured I wouldn’t have came because I wouldn’t have been at 100 percent,” Outlaw said. “I would have had somebody here that could do our country justice. I wouldn’t have put myself here if I was hurt or injured. I want our country to be represented by the best of the best and if somebody is injured then that is not.”
McBride has ridden before with broken ribs and says the injury can be extremely painful, but not for 8 seconds.
“Outlaw is going to give it everything he’s got,” McBride said. “I am not worried about his ribs at all. If he was, I would be. It is different for different guys. I have rode with them and it hurts. They don’t hurt when I was on the back of a bull. I never had an injury that hurt when I was on the back of the bull, but I have had several of them that damn sure hurt when I hit the ground. That is how the rib thing will be for Outlaw.
“Every guy is wired different about how they can process and tolerate things. He has a very high level.”
McBride will be counting on Outlaw to be a true player in the event as well.
The 26-year-old is the No. 4-ranked bull rider in the world standings and is 10-for-19 (52.63 percent) with one 90-point ride through five Unleash The Beast events.
Outlaw echoed his coach’s sentiments, saying there is nothing to worry about when it comes to his ribs.
He is ready.
“A few sore ribs will not hinder you from riding,” Outlaw concluded. “When you crawl into that bucking chute, it takes a lot of pain to still be thinking of that pain in there.”
