PUEBLO, Colo. – 2008 World Champion Guilherme Marchi capped his career off by winning the 2018 PBR Brazil Monster Energy Tour event in Goiania, Brazil, on Saturday night with an electrifying ride on the last ride of the evening.

Marchi rode Som de Peao for 87 points in the championship round – sending Goiania Arena into a frenzy – before being lifted off the ground by a group of friends in the arena and placed on horseback for a victory lap.

The 36-year-old announced earlier this year that he would be retiring following the 2018 season.

"It is great to win this event," Marchi said. "I rode all my three bulls. I rode strong. Also, to do this in front of my people. This is a great event. It is only PBR. It is not rodeo like we are used to with the events here. It is great to win with the Brazilian riders. Good bulls in the short go. It is great to finish strong like that. 

"I am never going to forget this last event of my career and to win this event here."

Goiania is only Marchi’s second PBR Brazil victory in the last 10 years as the 15-time PBR World Finalist primarily competed in the United States.

During his 3-for-6 performance at the 2018 PBR World Finals, Marchi took up PBR CEO Sean Gleason and three-time World Champion Adriano Moraes’ offer to ride at one more event in Brazil. Therefore, any Brazilians fans that were unable to make the journey to the United States for the Finals could see him ride one more time in his native country.

"Sean was there with me on my last ride and he told me, 'You need to ride this son of a gun bull and win this event,' Marchi said. "You will be a legend."

Marchi’s 87-point ride on Som de Peao in the championship round helped the 15-time PBR World Finals qualifier finish four points ahead of João Marcelo G. Santos, who was the only other rider to go a perfect 3-for-3.

Marchi began the weekend with 76 points on Combinado in Round 1 and turned down his re-ride option. He then rode Toque Final for 84.5 points in Round 2.

Marchi earned 120 world points to the 2019 world standings.

The PBR fan favorite owns the PBR record for qualified rides on the premier series with 635.

Marchi put forth one of the best seasons in PBR history 10 years ago. He rode a remarkable 72.55 percent of his bulls (74-for-102) in 2008, winning five events and posting 13 90-point rides on his way to the World Championship.

Santos picked up 70 world points following his rides aboard Amante (85.75 points), Stand By (70.25 points) and Camburao (87 points).

More important, Santos earned 325 national points to move ahead of Joao Ricardo Vieira for the No. 3 spot in the 2018 PBR Brazil standings. The Top 3 riders in the PBR Brazil standings will receive an invitation to ride for Team Brazil at the 2019 WinStar World Casino & Resort Global Cup USA on Feb. 9-10 in Arlington, Texas.

Ednélio Rodrigues Almeida placed third in Goiania for 40 world points after winning Round 1 with 87.25 points on Fantástico and finishing the championship round in second place with 89.75 points on Tirano.

2018 PBR World Finals event winner Marco Eguchi finished fourth courtesy of his event-high 90.75 points on Carcamano in the championship round. Eguchi was 2-for-3 overall and took home 20 world points.

Igor Junqueira finished 2-for-3 for fifth place. Junqueira earned 15 world points.
