SPRINGFIELD, Mo. – Reigning PBR World Champion Cooper Davis (Jasper, Texas) could not be stopped as he rolled his way to the title at the Built Ford Tough Series PFIWestern.com Invitational, presented by Bass Pro Shops Sunday afternoon at Missouri State’s JQH Arena.
Though Davis closed out his spectacular 2-for-4 weekend quietly with a buckoff against Cooper Tires Brown Sugar (Dakota Rodeo/Julie Rosen/Clay Struve/Chad Berger) in the Built Ford Tough Championship Round, he had already secured his first event victory of 2017, and first since winning in San Jose, California, last season.
In total, Davis won two rounds and Saturday night’s 15/15 Bucking Battle, leading to 850 world points and $49,155.
More importantly, Davis jumped into the thick of the World Championship race after moving up to No. 3 in the world standings. He started the weekend ranked No. 6. Davis now trails current world leader Kaique Pacheco (Itatiba, Brazil) by 549.17 points.
Brazilian rookie Dener Barbosa (Paulo De Faria, Brazil) finished in second place in Springfield after going 2-for-4. On Sunday, Barbosa won both Round 4 and the championship round. Barbosa’s Round 4 win came courtesy of an 85.75-point ride on Trump Train (K-C Bucking Bulls/Flying S Bucking Bulls), before he went on to win the championship round after riding Black Rose (Broken Arrow Bucking Bulls) for 86.5 points.
Barbosa leaves Missouri with 342.5 points and $25,807, which moved him up to No. 18 in the world standings.
Fellow Brazilian Rubens Barbosa (Iaciara, Brazil) finished in third place after his own 2-for-4 weekend. Barbosa was bucked off in both Round 3 and the championship round, but still secured his best finish at a BFTS event this season since finishing second in Anaheim, California, this past February.
Barbosa moved to No. 14 in the world standings after earning 340 world points and $12,495 over the weekend.
Emilio Resende (Santa Helena Do Goias, Brazil) took a big step toward qualifying for the Built Ford Tough World Finals after finishing in fourth place in Springfield after a 2-for-4 performance. He closed his weekend with an 85-point trip aboard Air Marshall (Hart Cattle Company) in the championship round.
Resende netted 262.5 world points and $13,645 for the finish, which moved him to No. 27 in the world standings after entering the weekend ranked No. 32.
World No. 2 Eduardo Aparecido (Gouvelandia, Brazil) kept pace in the World Championship race after he rounded out the Top 5 in Missouri. Aparecido went 2-for-4 over the weekend and picked up a crucial 125 world points and $5,695.
Aparecido trails No. 1 Pacheco by just 150 points.
SweetPro’s Bruiser (D&H Cattle Co.) was named the YETI “Built for the Wild” Bull of the Event after recording a career-high 47.25-point bull score when he bucked off Jess Lockwood (Volborg, MT) in Saturday’s 15/15 Bucking Battle. It is the sixth time this season that Bruiser has been named the top bull of the event.
American Bucking Bull Inc. (ABBI) held the final round of their two-part Big Tex Classic event for 3 and 4-year-old bulls in conjunction with Round 3 of PBR’s Springfield BFTS event. The champion bull at the end of the second Classic round was Mike Oakes’ Tan Lines with a combined score of 178.75. In second was Big Dutch of Ravenscroft/ Vos/ Nicolle Boyd/ Toby Floyd with a 177.5.
