Mauney wins in Billings

04.10.17 - Press Releases

Mauney wins in Billings

J.B. Mauney closed out his weekend with a monster ride on SweetPro's Bruiser to pick up his first event win of the season Sunday afternoon in Billings, Montana.

By PBR

BILLINGS, Mont. – Two-time PBR (Professional Bull Riders) World Champion J.B. Mauney had not been able to lay his hands on a Built Ford Tough Series (BFTS) event win buckle so far this season. That changed as Mauney returned to the top of the shark cage as the winner in the Stanley Performance In Action Invitational, presented by Cooper Tires, Sunday afternoon at Rimrock Auto Arena.

The North Carolina (Mooresville, N.C.) cowboy moved seven spots up from No. 10 to No. 3 in the world standings with the win.

Mauney went a perfect 4-for-4 in Billings, including a monster 94.25-point ride aboard the 2016 PBR World Champion Bull SweetPro’s Bruiser (D&H Cattle Co./Buck Cattle Co.) to win the Built Ford Tough Championship Round. It was the second time Mauney conquered Bruiser, the last time coming in Round 4 of the 2015 Built Ford Tough World Finals, and it carried him to his first BFTS event win since Nampa, Idaho, last season.

He also earned his second round win of the year after covering Mudshark (D&H Cattle Co.) for 89.5 points in Round 3.

Mauney took home 778.3 total world points for the weekend along with $41,596. He now trails current world No. 1 Eduardo Aparecido (Gouvelandia, Brazil), who was sidelined this weekend with an injury, by 1,123.76 points.

Shane Proctor (Grand Coulee, Washington) slotted into second place after his own 4-for-4 performance. Proctor covered both bulls he saw on Sunday, starting with an 85-point ride on Sully (Dakota Rodeo/Chad Berger/Clay Struve) in Round 3 and closing with an 88-point trip aboard Jack Daniel’s After Party (Dakota Rodeo/Chad Berger/Clay Struve) in the championship round.

It was the first time this season that Proctor went perfect at an event, and it helped him net 350 world points and $18,685. He also shifted from No. 15 in the world standings to No. 11.

2012 PRCA champion Cody Teel (Kountze, Texas) rode his way to a third place finish Sunday in Billings after a 3-for-4 weekend. Teel rode Sledge Hamma (Rocking I Rodeo Co.) for 86.5 points in Round 3 before conquering Hey Jack (Jane Clark/Gene Owen) for 87.75 points in the championship round. Hey Jack had been unridden in 16 career BFTS outs before facing Teel Sunday afternoon.

For the finish, Teel earned 330 world points along with a $14,850 paycheck, moving him to No. 12 in the world standings.

Teel also took the lead in the 2017 Rookie of the Year race. He leads 2016 PBR Brazil Champion Dener Barbosa (Paulo de Fararia, Brazil) by 280 points in the battle of first-year riders.

Kaique Pacheco (Itatiba, Brazil) went 3-for-4 on his way to a fourth-place finish. Pacheco rode two bulls on Championship Sunday, including an 86.75-point ride on Wicked Stick (Dakota Rodeo/Chad Berger/Clay Struve/H&C Bucking Bulls) in Round 3 before closing his weekend out with an 86-point trip aboard Jack Shot (D&H Cattle Co./David Huffman).

Pacheco pocketed 245 world points and $10,150 for the effort.

2015 PBR Brazil Champion Luciano de Castro (Guzolandia, Brazil) rounded out the Top 5 in the event after going 3-for-4 over the weekend. Castro began Championship Sunday with an 87.25-point ride on More Big Bucks (Dakota Rodeo/Chad Berger/Clay Struve) before capping his performance with an 87.5-point trip aboard BC Circular Insanity (Dakota Rodeo/Chad Berger/Clay Struve/H&C Bucking Bulls) in the championship round.

Castro picked up 165 world points in Billings along with $7,850. He also jumped one spot from No. 23 in the world standings to No. 22.

Pearl Harbor (Dakota Rodeo/Chad Berger/Clay Struve/H&C Bucking Bulls) was named the YETI “Built for the Wild” Bull of the Event after erupting for a career-high 47.5-point bull score when he bucked off Matt Triplett (Columbia Falls, Montana) in 1.98 seconds in the championship round. It’s the highest bull score since Air Time (Jared Allen’s Pro Bull Team/Phenom Genetics) bucked off Jess Lockwood (Volborg, Montana) at the Last Cowboy Standing event in Las Vegas in May, 2016.

The elite Built Ford Tough Series will next trek to the Pacific Northwest where Tacoma, Washington’s, Tacoma Dome will play host to the Tacoma Invitational, presented by Cooper Tires, April 22-23. Tacoma will also feature the last 15/15 Bucking Battle of the first-half of the BFTS schedule on April 22.

The action from Tacoma begins on April 22 at 10 p.m. ET on PBR LIVE and the PBR LIVE app. Immediately following Round 1, the Top 15 bull riders will face the Top 15 bulls in the season’s fifth 15/15 Bucking Battle. The special round will offer extra points toward the world standings as well as an extra cash prize for the winner.

CBS will broadcast the 15/15 Bucking Battle at 2 p.m. ET on April 23.

Championship Sunday can be seen starting at 4:30 p.m. ET on April 23. CBS Sports Network will also broadcast the Championship Sunday action starting at 8 p.m. ET.
