PUEBLO, Colo. – The Professional Bull Riders (PBR) has extended invitations to four Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association (PRCA) Champions to compete in the World Champions Challenge – part of the pay-per-view event taking place in Decatur, Texas, on Saturday, May 30, which also features the Built Ford Tough Ring of Honor: Unfinished Business event.
The PRCA Bull Riding Champions who accept the challenge would join four PBR World Champions, J.B. Mauney (2013), Renato Nunes (2010), Guilherme Marchi (2008) and Mike Lee (2004), who have already accepted. Three-time PBR World Champion Silvano Alves is out with an injury that will keep him sidelined for eight weeks.
The former PRCA Champions invited to compete include four-time PRCA Champion J.W. Harris, 2011 PRCA Champion Shane Proctor, 2012 PRCA Champion Cody Teel and reigning PRCA Champion Sage Kimzey.
“Winning a PRCA bull riding title is a significant accomplishment,†PBR COO Sean Gleason said. “PBR has great respect for the PRCA champions in all events and this special format allowed us to invite the PRCA bull riding champions to compete alongside PBR World Champions for the first time.â€
“Before PBR came into existence, the PRCA bull riding champion was unquestionably the best bull rider in the world,†said Cody Lambert, PBR Founder and Stock Director. “He rode on the biggest stage of that time, riding the toughest bulls for the most money available. That’s what the PBR is about week in and week out today and we hope that the PRCA bull riding champions will step up to the challenge.â€
The total purse for the World Champion’s Challenge is $50,000. Each champion will ride one bull with the highest-scoring rider claiming a $20,000 prize. The Challenge Champion will then face PBR bounty bull Sweet Pro’s Long John (D&H Cattle Co.). If he makes a qualified 8-second ride on Long John, he will receive an additional $20,000 bonus.
Unfinished Business features eight members of PBR’s Ring of Honor returning to competition in a winner-take-all format. Coming out of retirement will be PBR co-founder and 1992 PRCA Champion bull rider Cody Custer, former PRCA bull rider and 2000 PBR World Finals event winner Tater Porter, 1994 PBR Rookie of the Year and 2002 PBR World Finals event winner J.W. Hart, former PRCA bull rider and 1997 PBR World Champion Michael Gaffney, 1999 PBR Rookie of the Year and 1999 PRCA champion bull rider Mike White, 12-time PBR World Finals qualifier Ross Coleman, as well as two-time PBR World Champions Chris Shivers and Justin McBride.
