NEW YORK – There’s just something about New York City and J.B. Mauney.Â
The 2013 World Champion claimed a Round 1 win in the Monster Energy Buck Off at the Garden by riding Electric Prune for 88 points — good enough to win Round 1 and earn 100 world standings points for a round win.Â
Mauney has won three times in New York City, splitting the 2014 event title with Fabiano Vieira, and also winning event titles in 2009 and 2007.Â
This year, Mauney started slowly to the season, riding just one bull in Baltimore and one bull in Chicago to start the year, but he rebounded in a big way in New York. Mauney barely made the 8-second whistle, but an official review showed he hung on long enough to earn a qualified ride.
Mauney’s ride was good enough to best Billy Robinson, who was competing as an alternate in New York. Robinson finished second in Round 1 with 87.5 points aboard Western Way. With his second place finish, Robinson earned 60 valuable world standings points as he looks to work his way into the Top 35 riders on the BFTS.
Guilherme Marchi got off to a strong start on the weekend, as well, riding Justified for 87.25 points, and earning 50 world standings points for the third-place finish in the round.Â
The current No. 1 rider in the world, Silvano Alves, extended his BFTS-record steak of consecutive rides to 20, by riding Big Sleazy for 86.25 points. It was a busy week for Alves, who won the Built Ford Tough Series event in Chicago, then went 3-for-3 at the Touring Pro Division Finals in Denver before heading to New York. The reigning World Champion put himself in good position for the weekend, and added 40 points for a fourth-place finish in the round.Â
Two riders finished in a tie for fifth place, and continued hot starts to the season. Shane Proctor rode Blue Gangster for 85.5 points. Proctor has now ridden six of his first seven bulls of the season on the Built Ford Tough Series. Proctor missed almost the entire 2014 season after undergoing two shoulder surgeries.
He split fifth place with Kasey Hayes, who covered Let Er Rip for 85.5 points. Both riders received 15 world standings points for their fifth-place finishes. Â
Mr. U was the high-marked bull of Round 1, bucking off Sean Willingham in 3.25 seconds and earning a bull score of 43.75 points.
Round 2 and the PBR 15/15 Bucking Battle will take place Saturday at 7 p.m. ET. Tickets can be purchased at all Ticketmaster outlets, Ticketmaster.com or by calling 800-745-3000.
CBS Television Network will broadcast the 15/15 Bucking Battle on Sunday at 2 p.m. ET, while CBS Sports Network will carry all of the action of Round 2 starting at 8 p.m. ET tomorrow.
