PUEBLO, Colo. – In front of the first sellout crowd to see a Touring Pro Division event at California Rodeo Salinas in the 14 years the Professional Bull Riders has been in town, 2004 PBR World Champion Mike Lee (Decatur, Texas) put on a courageous effort against arguably the best bull in PBR history Wednesday at the Salinas Sports Complex.Â
Two TPD event entries and a re-ride later, Lee was in the marquee matchup of the night versus two-time PBR World Champion Bull Bushwacker. It would be his sixth ride of the night and a Salinas Rodeo record. At stake was a $10,000 jackpot if Lee could last 8 seconds.
In front of about 12,000 fans, Lee started strong, but five seconds into the ride couldn't hang on any longer. It’s the longest a rider has lasted on the bull since last August when J.B. Mauney (Asheville, North Carolina) rode him in Tulsa, Oklahoma.Â
The reigning PBR World Champion Mauney, current PBR world standings leader and 2008 PBR champion Guilherme Marchi (Leme, Brazil), 2013 Rookie of the Year Joao Ricardo Vieira and four time and defending PRCA champion J.W. Harris (May, Texas) are among the recent riders who have tried and failed to ride Bushwacker of late.
The winner of the Salinas TPD was rookie Tim Bingham of Honeyville, Utah. He combined an 84.5- point ride with an 86.5-point effort in the short round to finish with 171 points and more than $10,000 in prize money.
Bingham beat some of the best in the business. Not only did he top Lee, the only two-time winner of the Salinas TPD and the defending champion, he was also surpassed Harris, the reigning PRCA Champion.
Jordan Hupp, (Stephenville, Texas) among the top 40 in the PBR world standings, was the only other rider to complete two attempts. He had scores of 82 and 85 to place second with 167 points and earn$7,838.97.
Harris had the best score of the event in the first round with 88 points, finishing third and taking home $5,357.55. A.J. Hamre (Chico, California) was fourth with a score of 86.5 and Cody Campbell (Summerville, Oregon) was fifth with an 85-point ride, both taking place in the long round.
Only four of the first 35 riders lasted 8 seconds and just nine of the 40 had qualifying scores. Three other riders filled out the 12-man championship round based on their times in the long round.
