BRISBANE, Australia - Making his professional debut, Clancy Butler won the Brisbane Invitational in Brisbane, Australia, on Saturday night.
The 27-year-old was the only athlete to ride all three of his bulls, scoring 86 points on each ride, including Napoleon Dynamite in the championship round. Butler was a late addition to the draw after a number of leading riders withdrew because of injury.
"This is my first ever Australian Cup competition, but I've been riding bulls since I was as tiny as those little kids over there," said Butler as he pointed to a group of pre-school aged children nearby.
Ryan Storey scored the highest ride of the night with 88 points in the championship round on Barn Yard. Storey rode 2-of-3 bulls to take second at the event.
Texan Brady Sims, meanwhile, admitted to not knowing any of the Australian bulls when he was called up to select his championship-round matchup.
"I've had to ask the other guys what they think and they're telling me I should pick The Hump," Sims announced to the Brisbane Entertainment Centre crowd.
The event announcer was quick to point out to the American that The Hump had never been ridden. As it turned out, Sims was not going to be the rider to break that record, however, he finished in third with a total score of 165 points.
The Australian Cup Series heads to Allphones Arena in Sydney next Saturday for the National Finals.
