PUEBLO, Colo. ― The Caterpillar Classic in Des Moines, Iowa, will host the the season's fifth 15/15 Bucking Battle on Saturday, and seven of the 10 bulls we saw in the short round in Louisville last week are set to go in the bonus round, led by reigning World Champion Bull Asteroid.
PBR Livestock Director Cody Lambert has to arrange for two sets of top bulls at each event that hosts a 15/15 Bucking Battle, one for the 15/15 round, and one for the short round. Some of the bulls will go in both.
"He was good when they first brought him, and he's just gotten better and better."
Circle T's Showboat, a bull we've seen mostly in long rounds is moving up to the 15 round here. Circle T buys good bulls on occasion, but Showboat is one they raised themselves. He is a grandson of both Little Yellow Jacket and Kish's Wolfman, and you can see some of both his grandpas in his bucking style. Lambert likes what he's seen from Showboat in recent weeks.
"He was good when they first brought him, and he's just gotten better and better," Lambert said. "The best thing that's happened to him is that Ben Jones rode him at Albuquerque. He got stronger as the ride went on, and he got more kick as the ride went on. Ben won the first round on him there with 90 points, and that score was a little conservative. He could have been more. It was a great ride on a great bull. Showboat was bucking harder at eight seconds than he was at 6 seconds. He's bucked great since then, and he needed to be challenged."
Jeff Robinson's High Steaks, who we last saw in Billings, Mont., is in the 15 round here as well. High Steaks is a bull that was on probation for a while because he had a tendency to fall pretty often. He appears to be past that stage now, and he's been consistent for quite a while. He hasn't been ridden since April 2011, and he's recorded 21 straight buckoffs since then, including four guys who wear a World Champion's buckle.
"He's proven himself to be solid," Lambert said. "L.J. Jenkins bucked off of him in Billings, and he said he'd pick him any time he got a chance. He said he felt good and just bucked hard."
The reigning World Champion Bull Asteroid will go in the round of 15 as well, for his eighth out of the season.
"Asteroid is the reigning champ, and he's been great this year," said Lambert. "He's the underdog going into the second half of this year because Bushwacker has been so good, but he was the underdog last year too and he won it."
Lambert plans to change things up for one of the PBR's top buckers. Jack Daniels Tennessee Honey hasn't been ridden in nearly a year, and is one of the most explosive bulls going in the PBR, but he has recurring problem.
"He's had an issue with turning too close when he comes out of the chute," Lambert said. "Last week with Mike Lee he was so close to the let out gate he kicked his back legs straight over the top of the gate. We're going to have the gate men open the gate faster, similar to what we used to do with Chicken on a Chain, so he'll have more daylight, and hopefully he'll get out into the arena faster and have more room to turn back without being so close to the fence. He needs to get away from the chute clean, because he needs room to do his thing."
BMC Bucking Bulls Buck Dynasty may pack more action into a single jump than most bulls do in 8 seconds. He's got a lot of head movement, which often makes bulls look harder than they really are, but Buck Dynasty is pretty tough to ride.
"He's a little weird, and he's got some odd timing issues," Lambert said. "He's got to be pretty difficult to ride, because he hasn't been ridden in 37 outs, and he's put down a lot of guys who can really ride. You really notice his head movement, but it's a little different too. Gunpowder N Lead has a lot of head movement and it just makes him flashy. He keeps his head up so high that he doesn't break over in the front end, he has no drop, and he's just smooth. Buck Dynasty has the head movement, but he keeps his head down, and he can have some drop and can push off the ground kind of like Shepherd Hills Trapper can."
Jenkins will not only be trying to win the event as a rider in Des Moines, he also will be playing stock contractor. Jenkins' bull Molly Hatchet will be making his BFTS debut on Sunday in the short round.
"I have not seen him in person, but I've talked to 15 guys, and they all tell me if they ride him they'll be 90 on him," Lambert said. "They've used him at several Touring Pro events in the short rounds, and he's bucked off Austin Meier, Kasey Hayes, and Mike Lee among others. L.J. refused to brag on him, and I had to hear about him from some of the other guys."
We'll also see King Lopez and Shepherd Hill's Trapper, two of the top bulls from Louisville, as well as Smackdown ― the top bull from Billings.
