Eguchi passes Alves with second win, gains on Proctor

Tacoma Invitational event winner Marco Eguchi passed Silvano Alves in the world standings, gaining on world No. 1 Shane Proctor by winning his second event in three weeks.

By PBR

TACOMA, Wash. ― For the second time this season, Marco Eguchi stood atop the shark cage and lofted the event championship buckle above his head, this time as the winner of the PBR's Built Ford Tough Series Tacoma Invitational.

Fans cheered enthusiastically Sunday afternoon as he made one of only two successful rides recorded in the Built Ford Tough Championship Round and was the only bull rider to cover all three of his bulls on the weekend. With a combined score of 257.75 points, Eguchi took home $40,000 and earned enough series points to move into second place in the race for the 2013 PBR World Championship.

Eguchi is on a roll after claiming his second win in the last three events.

"I've been training a lot at home, going to the gym everyday and swimming a lot to stay in shape," Eguchi said. "I have better focus and concentration and I'm feeling good and strong. I've been lucky enough to draw good bulls and am very happy to win again this week."

With his move into second place, speculation begins about his chances for a championship title.

"I think I have a chance to be a champion, but I have to keep strong and keep my dedication," Eguchi said. "I'm a young guy, it's only my second year at this level, but I think I have a lot of potential."

After a hard-fought Round 1 win, which added a sprained left ankle to his fractured left fibula injury, J.B. Mauney earned the high score of the event, turning in 89.50 points on Santiago (Jeff Robinson Bucking Bulls/ Lowrey) in the championship round. He won the round and finished the event in second place. His finish moved him into the Top 5 ― to No. 4 in in the world standings.

"I think I have a chance to be a champion, but I have to keep strong and keep my dedication."

Rounding out the Tacoma Invitational's top three was 2010 PBR World Champion and 2007 Tacoma Invitational winner Renato Nunes. Nunes led the event on two bulls entering the championship round, but bucked off RMEF Bugle II (Jeff Robinson/Bar 3D Bucking Bulls) in 6.23 seconds to fall to third place behind Eguchi and Mauney.

Hometown favorite and world standings leader Shane Proctor came back after bucking off in Round 1 Saturday night to earn a score of 87.25 points in Round 2 aboard Wentz Bucking Bulls' Buck Naked and qualify for the championship round. Unfortunately for Proctor, Meat Hook (Jeff Robinson/ Bar 3D Bucking Bulls), sent him flying in 3.72 seconds and, while doing so, tied the highest bull score of the weekend with 45 points.

Meat Hook and Buck Wild each earned 45 points, but the back judge's scores of 45.50 points to Meat Hook and 44.50 points to Buck Wild broke the tie. As such, Meat Hook won the award of the Pabst Blue Ribbon High-Marked Bull of the Tacoma Invitational

The Built Ford Tough Series stays on the West Coast next weekend, March 16-17, for the Table Mountain Casino Invitational from the Save Mart Center in Fresno, Calif. This will be the BFTS's third stop in California this season. The event begins at 6:50 p.m. on Saturday and 2 p.m. on Sunday.
