SPRINGFIELD, Mo. - The only rider to ride all five bulls, 19-year-old rookie Cody Johnson won the Professional Bull Riders PFIwestern.com Invitational presented by Bass Pro Shops on Sunday. In only his fourth Built Ford Tough Series event, Johnson posted his first career win and earned $48,276.67 to bring his season earnings to $82,527.32.
Johnson took over the lead with an 87-point ride on Magic Man (Hebert Bucking Bulls) in Round 4. He had the first pick in the draft for the Built Ford Tough Championship Round, and selected Whiskey's Rebel (Boyd/Floyd/Denherder). Johnson clinched the victory after third-round leader Emilio Resende bucked off of PFI's Boot Daddy, owned by Springfield's Randy Little and Gene Owen. On the final ride of the weekend in front of 6,478 fans, he scored 88.75 points to win the championship round. Resende finished second with 343.50 points, and Fabiano Vieira finished third with 343.25 points.
Defending PBR World Champion Silvano Alves finished fifth in Springfield, and moved into first place in the Built Ford Tough Series season standings with 9,214.25 points. Alves, who began the weekend in third place, is 241.75 points ahead of L.J. Jenkins, who was ranked first for the last two weeks, and 458.5 points in front of Valdiron de Oliveira, who was ranked first 12 times in the first 21 events. Vieira moved up to fifth place in the season standings, despite missing the first six events of the year.
Defending World Champion Bull Bushwacker won the Pabst Blue Ribbon Bull Award for being the high-marked bull of the event, earning 47 out of a possible 50 points. Bushwacker bucked off J.B. Mauney in 3.11 seconds, extending his BFTS buckoff streak to 33 in a row, and his overall streak to 46 consecutive riders. Bushwacker has been the high-marked bull in all five events that he has entered in 2012. He has scored 47 points in each of his last two outs, which ties for the third-highest score this season.
Mauney won Round 4 with 92.5 points on Shepherd Hills Tested (Luthy/Duckwall/D&H Cattle/Shepherd Hills Cutlery) on Sunday's first ride. The ride was the high-marked ride of the weekend, and ties for the third-highest ride of the season. Mauney finished seventh in Springfield, and is fourth in the BFTS standings.
The first 24 events of the season have produced 19 different winners. Mauney has the most wins with three, while Alves, Vieira, and Robson Palermo each have two wins. Mauney posted his three victories in the first 12 events of the season before breaking his hand.
The BFTS will return to the Tampa Bay Times Forum next weekend for the DEWALT Guaranteed Tough Invitational. Bull riding begins at 8 p.m. ET on Friday, Sept. 21, and at 7 p.m. ET on Saturday, Sept. 22. Tickets begin at $10, and are on sale at the Tampa Bay Times Forum box office, www.Ticketmaster.com, and by telephone at (800) 745-3000.
Springfield is the 24th stop of the 2012 BFTS season, which opened in January with capacity crowds at Madison Square Garden in New York. The BFTS will make 28 stops in 23 states before the Built Ford Tough World Finals in Las Vegas on Oct. 24-28, 2012. The World Finals are where the PBR World Champion will be crowned and awarded the coveted championship buckle and a $1 million bonus. The richest bull riding event on the planet, the World Finals has a total purse of more than $2 million.
The BFTS is televised every week on CBS, CBS Sports Network, NBC, NBC Sports Network, and YouTube. BFTS telecasts are produced for the PBR under a multi-year agreement with David Neal Productions, a Los Angeles-based production company led by 34-time Emmy® Award winner and Peabody Award winner David Neal, who serves as executive producer.
