Riding The Situation (Dakota Rodeo/Chad Berger Bucking Bulls) for 89.75 points on the last ride of the night in front of a packed house at Wells Fargo Arena on Saturday, two-time Professional Bull Riders World Champion Chris Shivers won the Built Ford Tough Series Des Moines Invitational. It is the 23rd career win, and the first since 2009, for the 32-year-old, who has six Top 10 finishes in 10 events in 2011, including two Top 5 finishes in his past three events.
The Jonesboro, La., native, who had to wait for a judges' review before being given his score in the Built Ford Tough Championship Round, finished with 351.5 points, two points ahead of Fabiano Vieira from Perola, Brazil. Vieira had moved into the lead on the second-to-the-last ride with 87.75 points on Slim's Ghost (Jeff Robinson Bucking Bulls). Shivers and Vieira were tied at 261.75 points entering the championship round, which features the riders with the 10 highest cumulative scores. Vieira, who has now ridden a bull in all 11 events he has entered in 2011, finished first in Round 3 with 89.25 points on Segs the Juice (Jeff Robinson Bucking Bulls), erasing the 2.25-point lead that Shivers had after Friday.
Luke Snyder of Snyder of Raymore, Mo., finished third overall with 179.5 points after riding Yellow Jacket Jr. (Dakota Rodeo/Chad Berger/Clay Struve/Julie Rosen) for 91 points to win the championship round. It was the first time in 12 outs in 2011 and only the third time in the past 26 outs that Yellow Jacket Jr. has been ridden. Snyder, who was bucked off by the bull last weekend in Seattle, did not register a score on Friday, but advanced to the final round after a third-place finish in Round 3 with 88.5 points on Slim Chance (D&H Cattle Company). It is the third Top 10 finish in a row for the 2001 PBR Rookie of the Year, who moved up from 16th to 13th in the season standings. He won $216,500 on April 16 in front of a sellout crowd at the Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas and a pay-per-view audience. The $216,500 is the highest one-day payout of the 2011 season and the second highest in history.
World No. 4 Austin Meier finished fourth with 174.75 points, followed by Aaron Roy with 172 and Colby Yates with 169 points. World No. 5 Robson Palermo finished seventh, and top-ranked Valdiron de Oliveira was ninth.
