Two-time Professional Bull Riders World Champion Chris Shivers gave the fans at Jobing.com Arena one more reason to cheer on Saturday when he rode Big Iron (4L & Diamond S Rodeo Company) for 89.5 points in the Built Ford Tough Short Round to take the lead after the first day of the Glendale Invitational.
The Jonesboro, La., native, who finished fifth in Round 1 with 86.5 points on Updraft (Lufkin Ranch & Rodeo), has 176 points, and a one-point lead over top-ranked Valdiron de Oliveira of Aparecida de Goiania, Brazil. Oliveira tied Shivers in the short round with 89.5 points on Bad Moon (Circle T Ranch &Rodeo), and finished ninth in Round 1 with 85.5 points on Cat Ballou (4L & Diamond S Rodeo Company).
Round 3 and the Built Ford Tough Championship Round will begin at 5 p.m. on Sunday. Good seats are still available at the Jobing.com Arena box office, online at www.Ticketmaster.com, and by telephone at (480) 784-4444.
The only other rider to register a score in the short round was Shane Proctor of Mooresville, N.C., who had 85.25 points on Far West (Martinez Bucking Bulls, LLC). Proctor is in third place in the average with 170.5 points.
Travis Briscoe of Edgewood, N.M., is in fourth place with 88.25 points, and Douglas Ferreira of Chapadao do Sul, Brazil, is fifth. Briscoe won Round 1 on Outa da Blue (Circle T Ranch & Rodeo) while Ferrera finished second on RMEF Bugle (Jeff Robinson Bucking Bulls).
Each of the 40 riders here will ride on Sunday. Following Round 3 on Sunday, the riders with the 10 highest cumulative scores will advance to the Built Ford Tough Championship Round where they will compete with one more bull. The overall event winner will be the rider with the highest combined score from all four rounds.
The action will be televised in HD on VERSUS at 9 p.m. ET on Sunday, March 13. Play-by-play broadcaster Craig Hummer will be joined by nine-time World Champion and former Arizona resident Ty Murray, who will provide color commentary, and Leah Garcia, who will be doing dirt-level interviews. BFTS telecasts are produced for the PBR by David Neal Productions, a Los Angeles-based production company led by 30-time Emmy® Award winner and Peabody Award winner David Neal, who serves as executive producer and creative lead.
Glendale is the 10th stop on the nationally-televised BFTS, which makes 28 stops in 23 states. The season began at world-famous Madison Square Garden in New York, and culminates Oct. 26-30 in Las Vegas at the richest bull riding event in the world, the PBR Built Ford Tough World Finals. The Finals is where the 2011 PBR World Champion will be crowned and awarded the $1 million Built Ford Tough bonus.
